  1. Has anyone who deferred ever requested to get back on the list? I deferred some months back and am thinking about asking to get back on the list. I am wondering what you had to do and how quickly you got back on the list. Thanks.
  2. Just deferred today and I'll tell you how to do it quick if you are dropping the letter off. Don't wait on the first line, this is the first line you have to wait on at the 5th floor and you will get a number. Go immediately to the 2nd long line because you don't need a number. When you get to the 2nd line desk you just hand them the 1st paper of your packet where you sign that you decline. That is it you are done. Takes 5 seconds. I just wished I got there at around 8:30 or later and just handed it in, no reason to get there at 7:30 or earlier, waste of time. Going later like 9AM will mean that there won't be any lines at all. There is absolutely no reason to wait on that first line to get a number, you will just leave with the number and they will never look at it. You can probably just cut in front of someone on the 2nd line by telling them you are just dropping off the defer paper and it takes 1 second.
  3. It seems best would go in tomorrow and bring that packet with you because you will probably need to sign the first page. I called MTA on Monday as I also have my appointment tomorrow and the person on the phone says its just best to come in get on line, get a number, and then just hand in the form there. She also said it wouldn't take that long. I plan on getting there maybe 7AM tomorrow because I have class at 11AM.
  4. It is very confusing to me also. I actually called the number in the packet and got someone on the phone at the MTA. She said that you should come in person because if you mail it, it may get lost. Since I just mailed something to the IRS that seems to have gotten lost I am not going to mail anything if I can do it in person, especially for important stuff. What also is confusing is it says in the letter IF YOU DO NOT DESIRE TO BE CONSIDERED FOR APPOINTMENT, DO NOT REPORT. but, then it says below to sign and date "I DECLINE APPOINTMENT". its just confusing, you would think by signing "I decline Appointment" you then should not even show up. It should say "DEFER appointment"
  5. Hello everyone, I have a pre-employment date for tomorrow at 7:30 AM and want to defer. I also have school that day in mid-town at 11:00 AM. Would anyone know how long it would take me to defer tomorrow? Will I be able to make my class at 11:00 AM tomorrow? Do I need to go early to the MTA, before 7:30 in order for me to make this class? I'm not sure how quickly they process people. Thanks.
  6. With regards to deferring, I have done this with the FDNY test. All I had to do was send an E-mail to FDNY stating that you want to DECLINE. Yes, that is the words they use "decline" and not defer. Then to get back on the list I had to contact DCAS to reinstate my list number. What I am thinking is it may be possible that we don't even have to go down to MTA to decline (defer), we may just have to send MTA an E-mail saying that we want to decline. What do you think? Wouldn't it be a lot easier to just shoot them an E-mail instead of having to wake up at 6AM and head down to Brooklyn for something we can just do with an Email?
  7. I'm in the 700's and have not received a pre-employment letter. I heard someone mention a few pages back that they sent out pre-employment letters up to 1000. Has anyone with list number 700 or higher receive a pre-employment letter?
  8. Let us know what they do if you missed your date. I know when they mailed out the test scores a couple months back that the letter got to me a week late because the mail man delivered it to my neighbor by mistake and my neighbor was away on vacation. I did see the letter on USPS.com Email as they send you a picture of all your mail you should get for the day so I was expecting this MTA letter but didn't get it for over a week and my neighbor delivered it to me. You may want to log into USPS and see if they still have your old mail pictures on file as they keep that for a while, you may be able to see if it did get scanned and got lost by your mail man. Most likely your letter got lost in the mail just like mine . So if you should have gotten a letter you have no choice but to go down ASAP and get this worked out. Please let us know if they hold that missed appointment against you.

This is the basic deal, If you were off the books don't list it, meaning if you didn't pay taxes and nobody knew about the job, then DO not list it, you are just opening your self up for trouble by listing it. If you paid taxes on the job you should list it because if they do match it to the social security records then I don't know if you can get in trouble. I don't think this is as strict as the Police or Fire department so you probably don't have to worry all that much what you list.
  10. 700 here, I'm also hoping it gets filled because I would like to start towards the end of the summer. August would be perfect If I did get stuck for the June class then I would probably defer myself, but then I would be looking at starting probably in the winter if I do that because it takes a couple of months to get reinstated.

  13. From what I can find is that they want to hire 200 people and will potentially call up to 2000 people from the list for those positions. The people under #400 are going in next week to start the pre-employment so it seems they want to hire these people fast. Is it possible that with a 700 number I could start my pre-employment in the next few weeks and also be called for a job within a couple of months? Is that far fetched? I need to get an idea about when I will be starting. Last thing i heard here were people saying there was a hiring freeze for years, now it seems they want to hire people ASAP. We need answers!

  15. My list number is in the 700's and I got my OPA pass today but no pre-employment. It seems that people in the 400's got a pre-employment letter. Does anyone know how soon I could possibly be hired being in the 700s. Could it be weeks away or am I still looking at years? Does anyone know how soon the people who got a pre-employmen letters could be hired? Thanks
  16. I got my letter also and passed. I was also a bit worried about my score on this and posted about how I found this test difficult. I would assume since it says we passed the qualifying oral proficiency assessment that we passed both parts. Do you think if we failed the other part we would get a letter saying we failed and we would be off the list?
  17. What does this Pre Employment letter mean? Does it mean these people will be offered a job soon? I thought there was a hiring freeze?
  18. I agree that they seemed to be hiring quite a lot of people from the old list. Hard to imagine they need that many conductors also. Luckily for me I may have an alternative union job right now that pays better in my fathers field. I'd say don't wait around for this shit because you are probably looking at years, especially if you have a high list number. Look at the last FDNY exam, took years before I was called for that one and I had a low list numbger.
  19. Why are people speaking about freezes? They have been hiring a crazy amount of people from the old list. I even heard people say they needed lots of people. The last freezes I heard were in 2008 during the recession. Why would they have a freeze now with the booming economy and low unemployment? Are you not certain that when this MTA person said freeze, she really meant to say freeze for the last exam because it is over and used the wrong words? Was she even speaking about this new exam? I think you have to understand that lots of people are calling her about the old list and that is over with. She probably just says "freeze" and no more hiring because it is easy to say that. She probably doesn't want to say its over if you were not called as the exam has expired. I know from calling the FDNY that the people on the phones were always wrong and didn't know anything. I think its stupid to think they won't be hiring for 3 years when they were just hiring like crazy for the last exam. Why would they all of a sudden stop right now? Are they going to still be accepting people from the old list for the next 3 years? Are they really not going to hire anybody new for conductor for 3 years? Something seems really off here to me.

  21. Sorry about that above post, I couldn't figure out how to delete everything in the post that I quoted by mistake. Even closing the web browser and opening it back up kept it saved and wouldn't allow me to delete it. Question: Can anyone give me an educated guess on how quickly we could be hired. Assume my score of 700. When do you think I could be called for the job and actually working? I know this is an educated guess, but just to get an idea of how quickly things will be going forward. Thanks
  22. Damn 97.5 ranged from 400's to 1400's, glad I was in the 700's. What I don't get is how people got higher than 100, I even see people with as high as 110. Did they give free points on this test?

  24. The only reason I mentioned accomplishments is that a strong memory is probably required to achieve those accomplishments. You have to have a good memory and studies show a good memory is linked to academic achievements. You found the memory test easy, and you also scored a 79/80 on I assume part 1 of the MTA test that is better than I have on part 1 as I got 2 or 3 wrong. You obviously are very intelligent to score that high. You would probably be able to even get my accomplishments and have an easier time doing it. The only reason you didn't get an 80/80 was probably because of the single question that had two answers. You may be worlds ahead of me in intelligence and a far exception to most people taking this test. At least you said it was easy and you can back it up with scoring an almost perfect score on part 1 of the exam. Why you would waste your time with an MTA conductor job if you found the memory test easy and scored so well on the first part is beyond me. However, you are in the top 1% of the people who took the MTA exam, I maybe in the top 2%. I personally found part 1 of the exam difficult because I like to think my memory was good enough to clearly remember that two answers were extremely close and they were extremely close to really trick up your memory. Saying tricky is probably not the right word, it was definitely fair like you say, the answer was definitely there. The reason I say tricky is because they gave you very close answers and unless you remembered the exact numbers you can easily forget was it a 76 or what that a 74.. You know it wasn't a 12 or a 30. Considering you have no visual association with these numbers, like if you knew 76 was the street of madison squre garden or a certain train stop, you are just remembering arbitrary numbers which make it extremely difficult to remember. Since they give you so much information to memorize and you had to memorize it because you have no idea what the questions would be, you can't clearly keep all this in your short term memory unless you learned memory tricks, like turning numbers into pictures. This is some advanced stuff. You have to also understand where I am coming from, yes there were some easy questions, but we need to score a 75 to pass this OPA exam. I had to guess at way too answers, usually narrowing them down to two answers, but if I get unlucky and guessed all these wrong I can clearly fail. This I find ridiculous considering I am more than capable of doing this job. I also believe it may come down to a bit of luck on who passes and who doesn't. Most of us who scored well on the first part will probably narrow down the answers to many of the same questions. This means that some of us will get lucky and some not when guessing between the two answers, which is totally unfair if you ask me. Yes I believe there should be lawsuits. This memory test discriminates against older people I am sure and if we look at the test scores I best older people do worse on it. Just like the FDNY test in 2008 was thrown out and FDNY got sued this test can also be. I believe this needs to be looked into if this was discriminatory and we need to find out how it was discriminatory so we can sue the MTA and hopefully have them throw out this part of the test. Maybe we even say that it discriminates against minorities like Hispanics as they are not non-native speakers. The best we can hope for is that most people pass this OPA exam unless they are clearly lacking language skills, which I believe will probably be the case. Like they have a handicap that prevents them from speaking properly or they have learned English as a second language and their English skills are terrible. I can imagine if I had to take this test in Spanish or German, two languages that I learned which I am not very good at. The language barrier would make this test so much more difficult. The goal of the OPA exam should make sure we can speak English well enough and understand the spoken English word well enough to be able to speak clearly with MTA customers using the trains. You can probably understand why they have to give this test because they want strong speakers of English operating on the trains, and not a bunch of people who learned English as a second language that are difficult to communicate with. But if the average person taking this test like myself are failing the test at high numbers, then something is seriously wrong with it and something must be done to hold MTA accountable. Hopefully, like mentioned above most of us will pass if we are native speakers of English. I just know that if I fail this that many others will also, this could lead to lawsuits and throwing out this OPA exam completely based on it being discriminatory.
