  2. I just had a thought. Observing the ridership trends on Queens Blvd, it doesn’t seem like the train is as full as it could be, but yet service between 6 Av Stations and Brooklyn seems well utilized. Why doesn’t transit consider the following changes 1. Split rush hour service between 96 St/2 Av and Forest Hills-71 Av (keep the 71 Av trips via the 53 St tunnel), so that way each branch runs every 12 minutes during peak times. Midday service can be every 8 minutes (again either split to 96 St and 71 Av), or keep every 10 minutes and all trips to 96 St. Evening service until 10PM to 96 St and run weekend service there too. Night service can stay at Myrtle Av. 2. Swap the during the s Queens Blvd hours of operation then swap the to 63 St all other times. it Just seems that the isn’t as busy and having the service suspended for 7 months showed that the can handle Queens Blvd for the most part with not as much service on that end of the line, but the 6 Av-to-Metropolitan Av section needs at the very least the service it’s getting, if not more.

If the math is properly done and accounting for a proper spare factor for each route and a full length train, there will be just enough cars for all lines in the B division EXCEPT the , with no leftovers. But if the plans for full length trains is put on hold and transit gets a bit tight with spare factors (reduced), then there will be enough cars for the to be upgraded too (since the has the greatest potential to get rerouted to 6 Av, and they can immediately start CBTC work there to have the in their entirety be CBTC by 2030), leaving the as the only routes to host the SMEE trains
  4. The spare factor is too low. All the R46s are needed right now, just to hold down service. Otherwise you’d be seeing daily R160 stints on the Broadway Line for the during the morning rush since the R46s are barely holding on.
  5. Before there were 3 drop-outs (two 59 St trips in addition to the 96 St trip). I think there are less drop-out trips now since midday service is every 8 minutes instead of every 10 minutes, and likely before the service increase, there were trains that get taken out of service at 71 Av as well after the rush hour.

Yeah when there are very invasive train reroutes in which a train that normally doesn’t travel through a corridor arrives and runs to the same destination as another train route, people just won’t get on. Classic examples: via Crosstown (makes identical stops the entire way) switcheroo ( via Lexington or via 7 Av)
  8. The platform was closed for 4 months yes but I’m sure work was being done beforehand, AND the ran only on weekdays during the closure. There was no night or weekend train service through the area. But yes 11 months is way too long for a station rehab in ONE direction. Even the ESI stations in Astoria finished faster
  9. So far I think only 1 8-car train was transferred to Coney Island, to allow 1 R68 train to transfer to Concourse. Remember that the train is back in full service so the needs more R46s. It’s about a 60/40 split of R46s to R179s on the since ENY needs their cars again. So we have to wait until some 4200 series R211s hit the tracks before another set of R46s transfers to keep the spare factor high

  11. Yeah and people that go to Manhattan have to backtrack to Main St then remain on the local headed to Manhattan. Those needing ADA accessibility can’t take the Super Expresses since they depart from the Express platform at Mets-Willets Point, unless they miraculously catch it at Woodside-61 St (Junction Blvd is skipped)

  15. Those switches haven’t been in regular weekday rush hour use for 7 months. It’s not enough when switches are used just during certain hours for reroutes
  16. And that doesn’t mean that the train order will alternate between R46 and NTT train (R179/R211). You can get 15 R46s in a row and then a single NTT train, then an additional 7 R46s, and then 20 NTTs in a row, or any mix.

The to 168 St GO was because 8 Av was closed, and the all had to run via 6 Av, with the all sharing the local track between 34 St and W 4 St. The ran via Broadway to Whitehall St. Since the was needed on 6 Av due to the train work, and 3 routes were needed on CPW, they combined the and into the to 168’St and the had to run local in Brooklyn to make room. No more than 15-17 TPH on a single track on weekends.
  18. Ohh. So there’s just been a lot of crews with “dead time” between runs then? Got it. I always wondered what they do with train crews when their line is curtailed for an extended period (excess of 1 pick cycle). As for the yeah I can imagine how many extra crews were needed for that route with all the 59 St rush hour trips and the need to maintain Union mandated breaks for all crews. It wasn’t just about just adding 8 extra train sets each rush hour.
  19. I’d just run it the regular Astoria-Coney Island service and people will just have to tough it out. There’s not enough crews to run a second service from 96 St to Coney Island, to supplement. I’m assuming many Astoria riders will be ubering, biking, or walking to the to avoid the backtracking to Astoria Blvd, which is annoying especially when the is not reliable with trains meeting at Astoria Blvd for transfers. A lot of times, the Manhattan bound train leaves JUST AS the Astoria-bound train is entering with a full load of passengers, forcing another 15 minute wait.
  20. A random thought. I know that now with the 63 St tunnel reopening for full service, full service will be restored to the but are there enough crews to run this service? Remember that when the was cut to its current service (57 St to Metropolitan Av), the and got service buffs during the midday which was partially offset by service being cut in half. And during the first month or so. There were many crew shortages on the especially, even with the lack of 179 St trips. I wonder if it will be just as bad if not worse now that we need the full crew roster for the QB corridor and to maintain the service buffs that have been given.
  21. Yep that could work, just cut the to a Brooklyn-only service and run the on 2 Av (each every 12 minutes) and shuttle buses for Astoria and Brighton I’m assuming? The could handle 96 St on its own (if it ran every 8 minutes in place of the ) but the via 2 Av…no. Just leave it every 15 minutes its regular route. There’s already too many crew shortages to be adding service Willy-nilly

Even with the to 96 St/2 Av that weekend, maybe the could join IF the is having any more Brighton Line work done that could be piggybacked since 2 Av would be serviced by the and (in your hypothetical proposal). even if it were to pass, you’d have two branches each every 24 minutes, and a high likelihood for uneven service especially southbound.
  23. Here’s a very cheap solution that no one has come up with. Close all but ONE subway entrance at each station and ONLY one turnstile in service for incoming passengers, a two armed guards with a rifle and attack dog positioned watching people pay the fare ONE AT A TIME. And yes, lines will be equivalent to those at the airport, but that’s what happens when people fare beat. Everyone then has to be treated like babies. At least this should be a thing until a system similar to E-ZPass is set up and will scan every commuters credit cards, phones, and forcibly extract the fare from one of the accounts. No gates, just an arch people have to walk under, and a red X will go off in the lane of the person that didn’t pay, and that person will be sprayed with a fluorescent dye that will be scanned at each staircase and cops will patrol the trains. Anyone that has the dye will be fined. BOOM! Problem solved. So if you don’t want your $1900 cocktail dress or $5790 Hermes bag sprayed with dye, pay the damn fare
  24. Because some people are too fat to squeeze thru the HEET gates and if they malfunction people get stuck
  25. They used to do it at the start of Hudson Yards opening, but that just isolates a train for the shuttle service from the yard for the whole weekend. Likely the only reason they’re running the shuttle is because of the auto show. That’s why now they just suspend the west of Queensboro Plaza completely
