  1. I'm back for another ride.

     

    Based on past feedback, it seems that I might have a better time avoiding the random thoughts thread, since that's where most of the ire was drawn.

    I should also note: There are people on this forum who are far more dedicated to public transit than I am. And even though I didn't say it then, I envied your know-how.

    Let's be honest - my 10K swipe remark was clearly a call for attention. I only rode 219 times that month. Checked my statement after I made that remark. In an era where news is too often oversensationalized, that's something I will try to avoid.

    If I don't have enough knowledge on a subject, I will abstain answering.

    I will avoid necroposting. It's as much a no-no here as it is on DeviantArt, XDA and some Discord servers. I'll limit my input to the last thirty days from the date I last visit. Older comments will be reacted to, but not quoted.

  3. Several charters besides the Northway Express serve the capital region: Trailways in Schenectady (no ridership data from me) MegaBus at Collins Circle - UAlbany and Albany-Amtrak, Parking Lot B. Trips from NYC cost about $17 ($20 for preferred seating) Greyhound in Albany. Trips from NYC cost about $17. Haven't rode in about 20 years.
  4. Latham Farms [Stop ID: 07178], West, near Lowe's. the 370 to Downtown Sch'dy, and the 182 to Downtown Albany.

Mohawk Road and Glen Avenue, East [in Scotia] (reminder - Transit app allows you to search for bus stops and train stations based on their ID) These two bus stops have one other intersection in common: Rt 50 (North Ballston Av in this area) and Dutch Meadows Lane, and Liberty Park Station (the next and last stop from the above-pictured).
  6. As promised, now that I live up here, I'd be happy to provide you guys with updates on what's going on up here. Here are a few photos from this past summer: 3rd Street and Congress St in Troy, NY Blue routes are trunk - they run all week and most frequently. Route 22 operates largely along NY-32. Green routes are neighborhood - they run every day except Sunday for some. The 182 runs on Sunday, just once every hour. It operates largely along NY-378. I have rode the 224, just not into Troy. Yellow routes are express. I have not yet rode such a route.
  7. Long time no post!

    There are three infrastructure failures that are imminent in the next six years if the projects don't start soon.

    -The BQE Cantilever. If it isn't repaired soon, by 2026 all commercial traffic will divert into Downtown Brooklyn, creating the ultimate traffic nightmare far worse than Midtown could ever be.

    -the Northeast Corridor tunnel. By 2024, it will no longer be safe for trains to continue operating through it.

    -The (L) train shutdown. Unfortunately, I've heard that some afflueza-afflicted New Yorkers have hijacked the meetings, and have even threatened to sue to stall the project because it didn't get an environmental assessment (it was waived).

  13. that's kinda why I mentioned it, out of perspective or a seen-this-before viewpoint. the (MTA) is known for custom orders, too. It's why the price of things go through the roof. Even the type of CBTC being implemented isn't exactly being used anywhere else in the world and was done to make up for the lack of space in tubes.
  14. It's an incredibly savvy version compared to the original; however, its resolution is too low on WSXGA (1440 x 900 or 1280 x 1024) screens. Otherwise, it looks great!
  15. It's worth noting once again that this is not tied to SBS explicitly. Bee-Line and NICE buses do this on all their routes, the latter mandating it (not allowing pax to exit without driver OK).

I think the Triboro Rail Project would be a more feasible, better-serving and cost effective project. @BreeddekalbL how about connecting the SAS to the tip of the Astoria line instead of tunneling even deeper under Lex Av - 125 St? It would make for a fantastic view going into Manhattan and it wouldn't have to be tunneled under. The Manhattan portion of SAS would still be underground. But for EL material, fiberglass, faux quartz and stainless steel would make them the nicest looking ELs in the land. They get a bad rep, but the truth is, they really got bad maintenance.
  19. The 62nd Street - New Utrecht Av station's connecting foyer will be shut down as elevator construction is slated to begin. While it should be viewed as good news, it was planned in the last capital budget, and as such, is better late than never.
  20. That's for certain. After clarifying it on a B44 ride earlier this week, it seems every NYCT bus has doors that can be optionally driver-controlled. 'SBS mode' isn't really the term you use for that.
  21. The fareboxes are programmed differently between local and express buses only. Similar buses will never charge a differential because they cost the same between each other. If you program a farebox to take $2.75, it will take $2.75. If you program a farebox to take $6.50, it will take $6.50. If the data from a cheaper farebox [example=S4494 NE] is imprinted and put against one that charges more [example=X17J NE], the math is done to make it add up. It is, by no means whatsoever, a glitch. Another example: Bee-Line buses don't have to increase the fare alongside the city, but they choose to do so so as not to create a situation like this, but between the local buses of different agencies. They could keep the fare at $2.25 if they chose to, but transfers between city and Bee-Line buses would cost 50 cents (between their own buses, it'd be free though). That app is a calculator. Use the formula I mentioned. It works with any calculator. Bonuses are applied at two rides or higher at the rate of refill x 1.05 = total after bonus.
  22. If it takes the last $2.75, the callback balance can't exceed $2.75 or the transfer will fail. If you want the Xfer to work without a hitch, $6.50 must be on the card at the start of your trip. Upon swiping $2.75 at a subway or local bus, you have the same two hours to board an express bus with that same MetroCard to get a transfer. What app? Payment app or just an estimator? If you're not using EasyPay, the card is charged $2.75 at the turnstile, as opposed to the $2.62 (because EZP MC's pre-calculate bonuses before swipes). Bonus calculation is fare X 1.05 (after minimum two ride refill). Use 1/x formula to calculate per ride cost with bonus prefactored in.
