  1. So basically there’s a net gain of two cars? I wonder if two extra cars are already stored in the yard. Regarding the R262, I think the order should be a combination of both 6-car and 5-car sets with open thruways, that way they can run on the shuttle and the 7. It would work well to improve capacity without the extra half cabs and distance between cars. But that’s for the R262 thread.
  2. Hi all. I’m doing a personal project for openbve and it is the K-Class (MP51) PATH model. I have found no videos of the cars online and can only guess about the sequence of the rollsign readings. I also have no idea of what the cab looks like so I’ll presume it looks like the cab of a redbird (since they were both built by St. Louis). What I really need to know is if anyone can personally attest to riding/seeing/hearing the K cars in service (since none were saved for museums). What did the propulsion sound like, and was it GE or WH? Was the K Car a SMEE? How many power and brake notches? What did the train sound like when the brakes were applied or released, was it like an R33? I know this is a lot to ask for, but given that the negligent Port Authority failed to preserve any K-Cars after the fleet was purged in 2011, I have very few resources to work with. I already have diagrams and have made a full exterior shell, but that’s about it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
  3. I haven’t frequented this part of the forum yet (I’m generally a subway fan), but in case it hasn’t been said already, could someone please tell me how many M2 cars still exist? I hope that at least one car is being preserved for a museum! If not could someone bring this to the MTA’s attention before it’s too late, because it would be a MAJOR shame to see these cars disappear and be lost to history. There have been several recent incidents in which cars weren’t preserved when they were retired (like the PATH K-Car) and I wouldn’t want that to happen again. Thanks!
  4. What's funny about your comment is that I innocently walked into that little alcove many years ago! It was in the back of the train (so no T/O) and I figured it was a new experiment or something, so I looked out the back of the train as the tunnel blurred by (I am also a frequent rider so I was used to looking out the front or back). Then a very nice supervisor (with some special MTA logo on his jacket) kindly told me that it was a mistake and that the door shouldn't be closed 90 degrees. He said it was "a different design" than the singles on the 7 train.

  6. Anybody notice the spike in “half cab” incidents on the R62A trains? I’m talking about when the door is closed inward by accident and forms a half cab. (I saw a half cab on the back of a train yesterday, and another time on the 6 line.) Is this an employee’s fault or might this be the work of the subway vandals who broke into the trains a few years ago? There is a post on Instagram that showed a half cab too. It’s weird.
  7. You’d think after 8+ years of closing the tunnels on weekends that things wouldn’t be burning up anymore. Not to open a can of worms, but an N line extension through LaGuardia and out to Willets Point would REALLY help alleviate the disastrous delays (and crowds)! The 7 line is the only East-West route in queens besides Queens Blvd.
  8. According to Wikipedia, the R30 half that was on display at the (former) ASICS store on 42nd and 5th has been removed and scrapped. Can anyone verify this?

Could someone please explain to me why rollsigns have ASTORIA BLVD on them, when clearly it’s impossible to terminate a train at Astoria blvd without using the switches at Ditmars and and already end up AT THE PLATFORM at Ditmars??? We’re there every switches just south of Astoria blvd? I checked 1996 track maps and it hasn’t changed.
  10. It was just an extra, because the current signs were all printed 1988 and later. The 1985 signs (which were one piece rather than three) had 121 as an option.
  11. Exactly right. But I’m saying if the doors need to be locked, people should be able to “escape” the car by some means, without having to break the big window on the storm door (which is possible only because of the rubber window frame)
  12. Hi all, I’m aware that MANY years back, some subway trains had fire exinguishers (as well as emergency door releases, similar to present-day buses.) I’m wondering if the following things would be feasible. 1) Put fire extinguisher in every functional full width cab (if they aren’t there already). Leave the intermediate “abandoned” cabs alone, and in the case of R32/R42 trains, only put a fire extinguisher in the front/rear and middle car. 2) Add an emergency door release lever, if there’s no emergency intercom already installed for passengers I’m particularly targeting this at the 75’ cars (R46, R68, etc) that have their end doors locked. When the infamous F train got stuck in a tunnel, there was no way for passengers in “isolated” areas of the train to get help. Customers were left in the dark unsuccessfully trying to pry the side doors open. This is a safety issue because no passenger should be stranded in a car. Ideally, every car should have either an intercom or a door release. In my humble opinion, I think investing in safety is more worthwhile than spending money on LED lights, digital ads, and full cabs. What do you guys think?
  13. I like the idea, but the express track on the Jamaica line would not work. Structural issues would mean once a train runs above, the vibration would literally shake the stations apart. An alternative (and more costly) option is to build a third track in between the two existing ones, removing all existing platforms and replacing them with side platforms. Myrtle Avenue, Broadway Junction, Crescent Street, Woodhaven Blvd, and 121 St would be express stops with two island platforms. The would be a peak direction express.
  14. That’s bacause trains don’t come in sets of eight and ten cars, but rather they come in four and five car sets for flexibility (and maintenance) purposes. Speaking of “refurbishment”, R62A 2056 has exterior speakers (not sure if this is an old change)
  15. There was a set of switches just west of 69 st on the which allowed trains to occasionally terminate at 61st. They replaced it with the 74 st interlockings.

  17. There's actually more r32s on the than I thought. Rode one train today and saw at least three others in service (along with many more cars at ENY). R42s running as usual, and an extra pair resting at ENY, along with an R179 peculiarly signed up as a . Also the usual R143s are still running on the (I call them the impostor trains lol.) Couldn't help but notice the multitude of R179s on the line.
  18. Said stations were already Renovated in the late 90s (except for 3rd and 6th avenues). The MTA already said 1st Avenue is getting major upgrades with elevators, and other stations will follow with improved tiles and platform edges. 6th Avenue will get elevators much later down the line (along with the platforms).
  19. I, (along with probably plenty of other people on the forums), would likely be RUNNING for that R32 . I understand you like the AC and the bright lights and whatever, but this is way too far. The fact that you’re late to work because you CLEARLY took a circuitous route is insane. Imagine what would happen if the had all the R32s and the r42s replaced the r160s on the .Whatchya gonna do? Please rethink.
  20. What's a shame is that they appear to not be end cars. The R16 RFW is no match for that massive slant window! Why they're not end cars I do not know.
  21. How in the world do they terminate at 61st-Woodside if they removed the switches years ago? Do they run trains on the express track and just skip 69th? Looks like recipe for disaster!
  22. Are the slants running this year on the 16th and 17th? Heard the 38s were running but I haven't ridden the slants since 2009.
  23. Agreed. Skip-stop is often a last resort option if a line doesn’t have express tracks I.e. , or if express tracks are out of service (this happened with the yellow and in 1988 ). It also happens when the express tracks runs too long of a stretch on its own ( the , which people ended up hating.) If I do recall there was a plan in the 90s to do skip stop along the with a grey train. R110B signs were printed with the grey and I believe some R42s got them too. The TPH the has now makes it difficult to make a skip stop, let alone dig an extra express track under the stations.
