  1. Please delete this, unnecessary info and not something we want to spread more than it has been.
  2. Can confirm that overtime at the terminals have been drying up.
  3. They changed the parameters of the exam a week before the exam date. The scoring criteria were overhauled and changed to something completely different from all past exams. Normally exams are 80 questions, where you need to score at least 70% to pass. With the TSS exam, they changed it to 101 questions and made 3 separately scored portions. You had to pass part 1 in order to qualify to score part 2, then you had to pass parts 1 and 2 to have your essay scored. At any point, if you failed part 1 or 2, you failed the whole test. The first part of the exam was technical knowledge of the trains, system, and rules. However, the second part is where people are upset, it was more like a test for current TSS’ instead of TO’s trying to become TSS’. Edit: Also, they had people taking the exam a whole week after the first two test days. The exam questions were almost all the same, just in different order, so people with friends who took the test before them had the heads up on a lot of questions.
  4. Take everything you hear down here with a grain of salt. I checked the exam website and there’s no promotional T/O exam listed. Even if a supervisor or superintendent tells you something, it’s not guaranteed until it’s confirmed by the proper sources (like 180 Livingston). There are rumors of a T/O exam in 2023, but as of now there’s nothing to support that.
  5. I’m pretty sure you need the time before you can take the test.
  6. Don’t worry, I passed the latest TD and TSS exams already. I’ll be there soon.
  7. Nobody is invalidating your struggle in your 5 years of XX, but this just goes back to the “I went through it, so should you” mentality. Just because we experienced it, doesn’t mean that there can’t be a better system for the new people. We are a unionized workforce, the TA is a business, so we will always be at odds. However, since we are unionized; it should be a regular thing for us to constantly strive for better work conditions and better SOP. At the end of the day, you’re right - it is a business, and they will run it as they see fit. I just try to advocate for the people with legitimate complaints so they can be seen as more than just “lazy” or “whiney” millennials who don’t want to work.
  8. I don’t think that’s the proper way to think about it. The newer generation coming into the job just doesn’t want to put up with the bs. It’s not about laziness, it’s about not being treated like just another number. This is just what I gleaned from talking to our coworkers who have less than 3 years on the job. Of course, there are people who complain baselessly, but I agree to an extent to them questioning why the work environment can be so hostile at times. Saying “it’s just how it is”, “there is no logic in transit” and “that’s what we all went through” isn’t a valid response to them questioning the archaic system we work in anymore. Hardship does not directly equate to hard work, if that makes sense. Again, there most certainly are lazy people who just don’t want to work, but the ones who make legitimate and reasonable complaints tend to get, unfairly, mixed in with them. I’m happy to say that it seems the work culture is changing slowly but surely, with the newer generation of supervisors and managers moving up the ranks and trying to affect positive change.
  9. Definitely not. Only after you’re given an actual start date.
  10. Refuse is part of Miscellaneous, yes. It’s not for everyone that’s for damned sure. The only picked job (that I know of) where you can report to both A and B division locations in the same week. Living in Brooklyn and having been B division my entire career, then getting told to report to 241st was crazy.
  11. There are no real timetables, you just need to leave the yard and report to a G.O. by a certain time and leave the G.O. by a certain time. You will need to deal with RCC, you will also be operating mainline tracks so there is the possibility of hitting a signal. You will not need to deal with customers, but you will need to deal with other employees from MOW and contractors. EDPs are still around, though not on your train. The diesel fumes are not healthy, but you’re issued a respirator so you can use that if you want. It’s long hours on the PMs, you will not be home often, and your family will complain that your clothes smell like diesel.
  12. It is a picked job where you need at least 2 years in title before you can go sub-C if I recall correctly. The only other way around it is if they have a severe shortage of miscellaneous T/O’s and draft you. I have heard of people putting in G2’s requesting to transfer to worktrains, but I don’t believe they were approved. Stress levels are all subjective, what I may find relaxing - you might find stressful. I can only tell you if I like it or not; I do.
  13. Very good. I look forward to posting you if you ever go worktrains.
  14. That’s the mentality you need. Focus on yourself and securing your career first. However, don’t be a lone wolf and underestimate the benefits of study groups with like-minded classmates. A cohesive class tends to do better than a divisive one because of the support structure that’s built amongst them. Remember to study something everyday at home during schoolcar. If you do that, I guarantee that you’ll pass with flying colors.
  15. You’ll have 25+ years to work for transit, just enjoy the holidays and your free time for the time being.
  16. Unless they’ve changed the process; there’s no interview that I know of. I’ve been here for 4 years.
  17. There is no interview. What you’re thinking about is the swearing in process. They’ll call you in when there’s a class, give you all the paperwork and information after swearing you in.
  18. If you were cleared medically, then you’re just waiting for a new class.
  19. If you win, you wait until the bid goes in effect before you show up for that job. Then you work whatever the job you won is. So if the job is all in 1 location w/ Saturday Sunday off, that’s what you’ll work until the person returns to work or the pick ends.
  20. Extra List Queens. You only work on the queens lines, unless you fall to the board - then you can go anywhere.
  21. It’s really not a hard job. The hardest part after schoolcar is staying aware and careful while operating.
  22. People who go to work trains do one of two things. Either they never go back to the road, or they go back to the road immediately. It’s not for everybody.
  23. It’s fine, you have plenty of time. They tend to deliver the boots pretty quickly too, so as long as you order when your bsc / pass becomes available, you’ll be good.
