in my opinion the system should absolutely not shut down during this rough time. we have poor and middle-income families in places like ENY, brownsville, the south bronx, and harlem who can't afford luxuries like uber and cars and their sole/only method of transport is the subway. if the subway shuts down, those people will not get access to their necessities/means for living out their daily lives and will be stranded for several weeks on end. those who do want the system shutting down won't accomplish their goal because they are acting on the assumption that everyone will stay indoors, when that is/was absolutely not the case. the only reason why the coronavirus is deadly is not only due to a lack of proper sanitation/cleaning, but also because certain people are not taking proper precautions or equipped with protection whenever they are outside. the crime rate can also be contained if the MTA decides to make more preemptive security measures.

and it's quite funny that the people who want the system shut down aren't even the ones who depend on it like @Collin said. the people who want it shut down should've honestly kept their mouths quiet from the beginning because of the latter reason. if the state/MTA really wanted to shut down the system, they would have done so already. the reason why the MTA is intentionally operating on reduced service is because they know that ridership is low, but don't want to shut the system down out of fear for the reasons i mentioned earlier. it's the same logic for maintaining service during late nights. ridership may be low, but the lifestyles of people here vary to a degree where there are those who are dependent on overnight service.

point being, i heavily doubt the MTA will shut down service. they would have done it already but are keeping it open on the basis that it will save many others from being put at risk.

Arsons and lack of ridership like this is the reason we need more Cops in Subways,  RIP to the T/O. 😢

Saw this story on the news this morning. It was horrible, black smoke was POURING out of the subway grates. Several ppl have life threatening injuries. The fire might have started on the train so those cars might be scrap.

those cars will automatically be scrapped since they were destroyed by the fire.

Perhaps you and I have differing definitions of mainstream Democrats- mine is those who, in my experience, haven't cared about ordinary working people and/or reforming government for the better (Pelosi, Schumer, Cuomo) vs. those who have (Bernie Sanders, Jimmy Carter, LBJ).  I guess 'pro-corporate' would be a better substitute for 'mainstream'?

Either way, the Democratic Party is in need of serious reform as they are addicted to wealthy establishment donors and individuals more generally; they need to re-embrace the working class if they want to win back votes, not just the middle class.  As to Biden, I don't buy the whole narrative of him being dead in the water only to magically come out of left field overnight.  I don't buy Biden legitimately winning Washington state where Sanders trounced Hillary by a large margin four years ago.  I don't buy a guy who, for all we know, might try to give Hillary the VP slot.  I don't believe in coincidences, not at this point in my life- where I see smoke, I suspect fire.

Until the Dem leadership does some serious work on reducing their credibility gap, I'm going to have a hard time taking them seriously again.  Fortunately I've had enough sense to never take the Republicans seriously on anything.  I guess the moral of the story is, two parties are not enough to fairly represent 330 million people and their various viewpoints- the "big-tent" concept is a fallacy.

As to Medicare for all, whether it is a good idea or a bad one, it would constitute a first step in the right direction all the same.  Right now, to get to an NHS-type system, one would have to start from nothing, while also trying to overcome the strong opposition that would inevitably result from those who have a vested interest in keeping things as they are (pharma executives/profiteers, insurance corporate leadership, Wall Street investors, et ceter).

Bernie is not as strong was he was back in 2016, he is showing weakness and lacking capacity.

The City Council Speaker makes transportation policy in this City now? That’s news to me. Wouldn’t de Blasio and his DOT commissioner, Polly Trottenberg, be to blame for that since it’s DOT that makes the City’s transportation policy? Even then, I wouldn’t say they’re entirely to blame for why we’re expanding the subway slower than a snail’s pace. What about absurdly high construction costs?

Corey Johnson is Pro-Bus Expansion and he is also Pro-Cuomo, I'm Also blaming Corruption and Lobbyism for High Construction Cost.

I think it's too late for that, or any kind of development in terms of expanding rail in NYC.

The future of public transportation in this city will consist of the addition of dedicate bus lanes and select bus service.

It has the least amount of impact in terms of construction, no issues with using eminent domain, and cheap and fast to institute.  It's the quickest band-aid solution.

Yeah, Thanks to Corey Johnson for killing expansion of rails in NYC in favor of Buses.

It really did feel kind of like a mid 2000s throwback, really more like 2007 when the R160s only first began to sprinkle the (Q) fleet... except for the R46s.
This is what I counted in total today (There obviously might have been more than I counted) on the (Q):
7 R46 (Including the single train that ran as a shuttle from Brighton to Coney Island due to a GO)
    3 R68 (2 in a row even...)
    2 R160B

I got on one R46 to Brighton, and back on an R68. Feels weird to think that this is the new norm again.

    (Q) has 22 rolling stock trains not 12

DUDE, DO U READ MY COMMENT WHAT I SAID??? I SAID I NEVER SAID R160s will definitely return back to Coney Island Yard BUT THERE IS 50/50 Chance since ALL R211s ARE ALL CBTC EQUIPPED TRAINS.

About the R211 transfer there is a 50/50 chance that the R160s will transfer back to the CIY it's only a Prediction people keeps saying that but they don't know that's true, just wait a few years and will see about that

Exactly, I'm not saying R160s will return back to CIY when R211s arrive but I'm saying there is 50/50 chance. we will will see and we are not sure tbh.

An Extremely rare chance that they could do CBTC again, There's a chance that some R160s wouldn't move to the CIY again or It will, We're gonna see,

Also Thanks for telling me it's gonna be testing in the next year I can't wait to see it in action.

R211s are expected to arrive for testing in Q3-Q4 2020, but it will be in Service in 2021, I Agree we will see. Me Personally is 50/50 Chance.

Is it known whether the R211A's might be assigned to relieve the R46's at Coney Island? Or are the R211's going to go to Jamaica and the R160's will return to Coney Island? Or is there really just no information on that yet?

    I Hope

Andy Byford would have not taken the position at the MTA if Pataki was governor as if anyone thinks Cuomo is bad, Pataki was far worse

You could not say  anything without the approval of either Al D'Amato ro better yet Zenia Mucha and who cannot forget the picture of Al D'Amato taking ole George by the hand after George was nominated in 1994, It was either the Post or the News that had it on the front page. Everything had to be screened before it was issued and nothing went out without permission. The Albany Times- Union finally  was able to get an audience with the Commisisoner of Correctioanal Services and he could not say a word without looking first at the Pataki person as to what to say and therefore speak.(I have the complete citation somewhere and I remember it was from 2000).

Politicians like to control the flow of information to the public and even though there are laws that""protect" employees from management taking it out on them for making the information avaiable after going through the chain of command to have the problem resolved, the  laws very seldom if ever work..(New York State Civil Service Law 75 (b)(2) is the prime example). I feel for Mr. Byford as he had the courage for speaking out and I know how he felt the wrath of a Cuomo (or a  Pataki) who would do everything through their subordinates to get someone removed for speaking the truth.

My opinion of Mr. Byford is of a person who is an honest individual and he  will do quite well where he willbe offered and accepts a position

You're right, to be honest i don't know much about pataki but pataki looks much nice person compare to cuomo and trump.

Yes, Republican Governorship would be a Trainwreck for NY.

Can't believe I'm saying this but imagine what Andy could have done under a Governor like Pataki

Pataki was Better and Decent Man compare to Cuomo and Trump, also NY under Pataki he even proposed a High Speed Rail that runs from NYC to Montreal/Toronto, but i prefer a Progressive Democrats like Cynthia Nixon and AOC to become a Governor of NY, Stringer for NYC Mayor and Bernie for US President.

Cuomo, Trump, Giuliani, Bloomberg, Boss Tweed, Malliotakis, Robert Moses, Spitzer - must be the water because it seems like a lot of mediocre NYers with ginormous egos get elected or appointed to important positions and then do dumb stuff.

also Lee Zeldin and Peter T. King as well, they are horrible and imagine if Zeldin and Pete King were Governor of NY? It would be a nightmare and a disaster or they would be just as bad as cuomo.

it was even stated back in January 2019 that R211 will be in conjunction with QBL CBTC, CBTC in QBL will be fully completed and activated in Q4 2021 that time R211s will be on service.

I Hope and Wish for R160s to be return back to it's same home (Coney Island Yard) that was swapped out.
