  1. Hi everyone, I have a question regarding the Boston subway. More specifically the heavy rail subway lines like the Red and the Orange lines. Why is it that trains have red lights even on the “front”? Isn’t it the case that the front lights have to be white? Thank you
  2. At the point the system is right now, perhaps the only way forward is CBTC. I don't know the details of subway operations and my observations are from being a regular subway rider. The current crisis, in my opinion, is the result of the TA's knee-jerk reaction to accidents and incidents that have occurred over the course of the years and their overzealous approach on safety. Because of this approach, the effects those measures had on capacity were not taken into account until they had an adverse effect on the subway actually being able to run the scheduled trains, be it because of timer proliferation, ridiculous terminal procedures, lax attitude by RCC on how much service is actually run vs scheduled and overcautious train operators coupled with the slowing down of trains themselves. We now have a subway network that is riddled with timers that have effectively destroyed capacity potential. And this is were CBTC will actually help, I believe. Because it will give those overly cautious train operators more confidence when manually operating the train, instead of them relying on strict unmaintained timers which slow them down even more then they "have" to. The MTA has to, at this point, look at and follow best practices from all over the world so that it can improve on its basic day to day operations and make them worthy of a system that carries over 5.5 million people per woking day. The NYC subway can no longer be the exception. By switching to CBTC there would be less moving parts in the signaling system that are prone to failure, train speed would be precisely and accurately regulated the subway would be much closer to optimal performance than it is today. These are my thoughts of course.
  3. Off topic, but actually they won https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-itc-ruling/u-s-trade-body-backs-canadian-plane-maker-bombardier-against-boeing-idUSKBN1FF2MB
  4. Hello, Does anyone have an idea of when we will receive our score in the mail? Thanks
  5. It can handle a train approximately every 6 minutes.
  6. Regarding the specific question everyone is referring to, it did seem to have 2 correct answers, but the booklet said in the front that if more than one answer is chosen, the answer will be counted as being wrong.
  7. How long does the test last? Are you allowed to leave when you finish?
  8. I was in a situation where the C/R got sick a couple of months ago. Specifically on a downtown 4 on a Saturday morning. They announced that the train is no longer in service..
  9. Bombardier did not manufacture its own propulsion system when the R142s were built. The propulsion on the R142As wasn't developed by Bombardier, it was developed by ADtranz, which was later bought by Bombardier. ADtranz at the time belonged to Daimler (manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles). This is why Bombardier used Alstom motors on the R142s.
  10. Today morning on the lex: any comments/thoughts by employees would be greatly appreciated.. Onboard a s/b 4, everything just fine until we reach 14th/union sq. where we are switched to the local track. No explanation given. C/R informs us that the next stop is Brooklyn Bridge. As we are leaving 14th I see a 5 arriving on the express track. We run express on the local track. North of Brooklyn Bridge we stop. The 5 I saw passes us on the express track and enters the station. We then proceed into the station on the local track and are informed it will be the last stop.. 4 trains go by until I can finally board one to continue south...
  11. Question: are the third rail contact shoes of subway cars retractable? If not how is the electricity cut from the train in case of an emergency?
  12. The issue was at the local track at 59th. Some 6 trains were running express southbound, some others were cancelled at 86th going southbound or 3rd avenue. I was on a train that was probably the first one to go via local all the way to Brooklyn Bridge. The way they posted it on the website made it seem that the issue was on the express track, when in fact it was on the local.
  13. Here's the link http://www.nydailynews.com/new-york/queens/massive-drill-bit-cuts-occupied-f-train-article-1.1993584
  14. How was this gonna happen sooner or later? And by the way, the train overshot the bumper block.
  15. This will happen during all May weekends + Memorial Day as per twitter.
  16. 1. I'd assume this has to do with the location the TA has chosen to store trains during winter storms. So they probably store the trains on the southbound track and not the northbound track. 2. Well, I assume (again) that this is a very complicated process. Essentially they have to "rewire" the whole line. Miles and miles of cable. Plus they're also replacing track and rehabilitating the Steinway tubes, so they probably can't do this any faster.
  17. Service Change Posted: 02/27/2014 7:32AM Due to a train with mechanical problems at DeKalb Av, the following service changes are in effect: There are no trains between Atlantic Av-Barclays Center and Canal St in both directions. There are no trains between Prospect Park and Canal St in both directions. Northbound trains are running with delays. As an alternate, customers are advised to use and trains. Allow additional travel time.
  18. There were signal problems at Nevins st. which could have resulted in trains being backed up.
  19. From what I saw on twitter, there was a ceiling collapse at DeKalb Av...
  20. Actually they have more differences than similarities. They are totally different as far as I'm concerned.
  21. They started putting flags on the sets. Finally!
  22. Quick question. I'm not so much a railroad person, so I was wondering. Does the MTA pay for the diesel fuel it needs for the trains? Or is there some sort of state/federal subsidy?
