  1. True, but I was thinking in terms of the fact the (B) would be running mostly on its normal route whereas the (Q) would not be, even if the (B) normally doesn't run late nights.  Some people on 6th Avenue would be more adept to get on a (B) than a (Q) even if its running outside of normal hours.

That's why the NTT's have several programs for various re-routes, if not the old fashioned way will be done. Even with the NTT's and the correct re-routed announcements people are still confused(hence empty trains running down a line that is not its mainline).

  2. I would cut the (R)(S) 42nd St, (S) Rockaway Shuttle, and (C).

The (N) would replace the (R) running between Continental & C.I via Whitehall

The (E) would replace the (C) and serve as a full express to The Rockaways(Rush hours and weekends), (A) would be fully local to Lefferts/The Rockaways.

The (J) would be extended to Bay Ridge all times.

As for the (N) replacing the (R), the (W) would serve Astoria all times, the (Q) retains its 2nd Av route.

  3. It's really nice seeing coverage and individuals who take time during their evening lives or early morning lives to film this. The testing will continue for the next few years correct?(meaning the new sets once production starts) or the testing will just be for the introductory set and the following sets will see immediate service after its prepped?

  4. The R32s on the (B) will be interesting.

I'm curious to how. When the R-160's were being delivered in full swing the (B) had one set between 2009 possibly earlier and mid 2010. It was not a concern then because lots were in awe of the 160's and didn't pay any mind to the minority. I wonder how many people remember the brief of 44's/46's on the (C)(E), the 32's on the (B)(R) & even (F) in 2009/10 hell even the (G) but it went unnoticed from the excitement of the "new" subway cars.

  5. Even though it may be "official" we all know how the MTA states something and yet the opposite occurs. I doubt ALL of the R-32's will be retired from the 179 order. They will be NEEDED for other services than the lines that are getting the new subway cars. When the (L) shuts down of course the extra cars will be used for increased service but the Eastern Division will use them up as needed but then we're leaving out the (G). Are the 5 car sets of 179's they are slated for the (A) displace some of the 46's to the (G)? If that were to happen then I could see the 32's being retired.

I mean come on when the R-160's came in they were slated to retire ALL the R-32,38,40,42 but guess what the 42's are still here and the workhorse 32's are still here because of the obvious structural integrity issue of the frames on the 44's. I think at least 40-60 cars of 32's should remain for service(when needed) such as put-ins or school trippers as they do with the (J)(Z) run them at night or just for a round trip or two during the rush hours.

  6. I'm hearing both of those as well, but more are leaning to the (C) getting the 160s along with the 179s mainly for the (L), the (J) getting the 143s, and the 32/42s going somewhere else.

Either way, someone getting new trains.

From my view which means absolutely nothing it would make sense based on how the MTA is more organized meaning specific trainsets assigned to yards rather than a variety. I mean why not give the (J)/(Z) the 179's and the (C) keep the 160's, then again it could work the same vice versa but the view I'm looking at is the new cars are CBTC compatible but they're not installed. They're like the R-142A's Supplement sets of 7731-7810 which have the CBTC which have been on the (4) from the start. Those 179's can be on the (L) with the CBTC pending on installation bumping off the "odd balls" of 160's that would be exclusively for the Jamaica lines J/M/Z which would mean the 179's would be on the (C) exclusively while Fresh Pond & ENY holds down all 160's.

I expect all the 42's to be retired with many R-32s but some will stick around for service for quite longer.

Totally agreed with you someone somewhere is getting new trains. But nothing is set in stone.

  7. My point is that the R179s don't have CBTC equipment installed to be used anyway, so it's pointless to shift all the cars around to Jamaica and send the 160s elsewhere if they can be used for CBTC operation themselves. IIRC, there is a 160 set at Jamaica with CBTC being tested, or at least installed. The 179s will run on the (A)(C)(J) and (Z) and the Jamaica 160s will stay at Jamaica. Better to keep fleet moves to a minimal and keep things simple.

It won't be pointless because the way things are now is yards have specific equipment instead of a variety of equipment. There is a small portion of 5 car sets of 179's coming in. I don't forsee Pitkin taking them in when the (A) can be exclusively R-46's. Meaning the 5 car sets of 179's go to Jamaica and the even trade of Jamaica's 46's goto Pitkin. There are still 46's that run on the (F). It's obvious that the 179's will run on the (C)(J)/(Z) but who knows as I stated earlier the way things are today the 179's may all go to the Jamaica lines and the (C) be exclusively 160 or vice versa the 179's all go to 207th and the Jamaica lines (J)(Z) are 100% 160. But with the MTA now in days who knows.

  8. I am not saying that you should take pictures, but what is their reasoning for not allowing pictures? They don't want people to be distracted on the job? They think that people will get the track layouts, oh wait there is already a book on it.

The reasoning shouldn't have to be said. It's a rule as he is stating. It doesn't matter if the reasoning is for distraction, or what. When you actually have a job if you have one there will be rules where you aren't allowed to do certain tasks. Every job is different. Every job has different guidelines for rules. The job I hold down as an office assistant at college doesn't allow us to have our phones out that is visual to our customers but we are ALLOWED to have them placed where customers can't see such as under a folder etc.

  9. No point in sending 179s to Jamaica when they can just use the 160s for CBTC. They've already been testing some 160 sets with CBTC for QBL so might as well just keep them at Jamaica.

That's my point the 179's are CBTC compatiable, the 160's are not(at least not the 5 car sets) that I am aware of. QBL/Culver are getting CBTC retrofitted IIRC, so why not send all the 179's (5 car sets) to Jamaica bumping the 160's to CIY or Pitkin for service for the (A)(Q) extension.

  10. Union I think you may need to reword this.

And here's something I've noticed, during the 2019 (L) shutdown, the R179's may actually run on the (M) as well as the R143's in order to increase service.

They will run where they are assigned to(yard) or needed(supplement service). Of course they're supposed to replace the R-32's and 42's but that doesn't mean they'll be placed where the 32's and 42's roam now. Since the 179's are CBTC compatible I would think why not have Jamaica take in most or all of the 179's(5 car sets) for the QBL lines (E)(F)(R) and bump the 160's elswehere for the (Q) and the (A)(C). I'm not proposing just thinking of the "future" advancements because they won't hit service until next year as well be in full production(meaning cars coming in on a daily). The QBL and Culver is the trackage still being updated to be ready for CBTC?

  11. Some of you guys seem to be nitpicking minor differences that are obvious standouts from the R-160 subway car. The 179 is just an "upgraded" version of the 160's. The comparisons are like R-32/38,62/62A,68/68A, and 142/A/188 its very minor. I hope none of you were expecting a different appealing subway car other than a 160 look alike  :P

  12. Wow! Now that I read some of which is on going, I remember years ago people were stating the R-160 should had been one big order including the option 3(if there was one) if not include one. I would still agree to this day it should had been done but back on topic about the 179, if it is cancelled or handed over to another builder, when would the first production trains(not TEST) would be rolling in?

I love the 32's to death but they are seriously kicking their asses and their service is very appreciated even though they are disliked and breakdown often due to age. Still getting the job done, still getting bashed, banged up, and breaking down but they are needed. Cant wait till they finally retire but appreciate service they still provide while this 179 b.s is happening.

  13. Nothing that's news to me. Was just saying that there were two cars not sets cars of 179s in but I didn't ask where becaus he got talking about other stuff. Not sure where his source was and he mentioned that they're the MTA is hoping to get the production trains in service by time the 2nd av subway open. So... not sure if the test train is an 8 car or 10car set. Other than that he was just sharing his experiences with operating different equipment hates the 46s but likes that 68/68A even told me off topic the 68s used to be able to hit 70 but that's all.

  14. Usually over the summer there is a gap in service and a (C) makes it way to Lefferts or one of the Rockaways, and I remember a (C) R32 and 160 sets being sent out to Far Rock for service gap. I don't know why but it seems a (B) or even (D) was sent o Lefferts or Rockaways.

  15. Due to not receiving enough funding, the MTA decides to teach a visiting Andrew Cuomo a lesson. All power west of Lexington Avenue (not including Lex) and north of Brooklyn Bridge is disabled, but power remains on in the Bronx. Also, just to be salty, the MTA decides to cut power of the BMT Astoria line.

(yes I know this will never ever happen, but I'm having fun)

All lines are SUSPENDED in Manhattan except the (4)(5)(6) where they remain unaffected because as you stated not including Lex. However BB is disabled so the:

    (4) Woodlawn to Grand Central

    (5) Bronx Shuttle

    (6) Pelham Bay to BB

    (2) runs between Flatbush and Fulton St (via Lex)

    (3) New Lots to Wall St.

6th,7th,8th Av Suspended along with Broadway.

    (L) runs between Canarsie and Bedford

    (F) rerouted via Crosstown.

    (A) Jay St to The Rock/Lefferts via local

    (C) suspended

    (E) Jamaica to 23rd/Ely

    (B) suspended

    (D) CI to Atlantic

    (M) Shuttle

    (J) Jamaica to Marcy

    (N) Astoria Shuttle

    (R) Whitehall to 36th St

    (Q) C.I to Atlantic Av

don't know what else I missed. Shuttle buses provide service for the outage west of Lex

  16. A electrical malfunction has had the whole entire upper east side and the Bronx in a mess. There is no power in the Bronx and Manhattan north of 42 Street.

    Reroute away!

You seriously need to review what you type. Aside from the grammar, you stated there's no power in one borough(Bronx) also north of 42nd St(Manhattan), as well as a portion in Manhattan(upper east side). Albeit you said north of 42nd St you never specified the West Side, so my point is you were better off saying there is a power outage north of 42nd St in Manhattan also the entire borough of the Bronx. Anyways.

    (1)(3)(5)(6) are SUSPENDED

    (2) runs between 42nd & Flatbush Av via local

    (4) runs between Wall Street & New Lots (was gonna terminate trains at Grand Central but the switches are north of the station so Lex is unusable).

    (A) 34th St to the Rock/Lefferts uptown exp, local originating from 34th.

    (B) Herald Sq to BB / (D) Herald Sq to CI

    (C) Suspended

    (E) Jamaica - Queens Plaza

    (F) rerouted via Crosstown

    (N) runs via Shuttle Queensboro to Astoria

    (Q) runs from 42nd St to CI via Sea Beach

    (R) 42nd to Bay Ridge

not sure what else I would had missed.

  17. I have equally enjoyed the catching of the R143s on the Jamaica Line. I don't think I can ever recall a time in the subway's history when they had four distinct car types on one line (the (J)(Z) having the R143s, The R160s, the R42s, and the great R32s all at once).

It's a rarity now but you're making it seem like a single line hasn't operated four or more different equipments on a line.

    Remember when....

    (A) had Slants, Mods, 42's, 44's 46's,32's,38's

    (B) Mods, 42's 68, 68A

(E)(F) 32's, Mods,42's,160's at the same time IIRC circa 2008/09 and so on. Even 46's roamed the (E) regularly for a while.

  18. However, are they even banned from the line or it's okay to operate?

They can operate on the Brighton if necessary, as I told the other person I've seen an R-46 (F) operating via Brighton. IIRC it was about 3 years ago. As for "banned" I'm not sure if its a STRICT ban as the R-32s are banned from certain lines. And the 46's had Rockwell trucks they don't anymore when 46's operated regularly on the Brighton in the 70's.

  19. The (F) gets rerouted to Brighton? When? Do you have footage I would love to see that footage

Why do you need footage? It has happened because I've seen it not been told but SEEN it. The (F) very seldom gets re-routed via Brighton, you'd be surprised the things I've SEEN without having camera on hand or cellular device such as R46 (C) re-routed via Concourse also 32 C this was about 3-4 years ago. The things I've heard are different.

  20. Brighton riders will complain about R46s on the (B) because of vibration issues and the rest should go to Jamaica to go on the (F) (since the (E) riders would most likely complain)

I don't see how and why they would complain, the issue was in the 70's when the 46's had the Rockwell trucks. A 46 or two makes it way down the Brighton every once in a while and I highly doubt anyone notices. There are very rare occasions when an (F) is re-routed via Brighton usually via (B) line.

  21. I think it has to do with the MTA can change anything at anytime, and it could lead to someone believing Rxxx could end up on the X line, which would make something look for one unit that isn't even on that line. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I might just make a speculation thread so that way there are no problems with speculation and everyone could be happy.

We all speculate whether its on the forum or during our lives not on the forum. I'm sure the MTA comes up with various speculations to see what's BEST for everyone. Nothing is ever certain until it's done. The samething happened with the speculations of several swaps in the past that made sense but didn't make sense but they happened. We have the right to voice our theory of how things may or may not play out even if we don't have a role in say its a what if judgment as if the person was in charge what would work best. Very few believed the Eastern Division would run R32 equipment again but it happened, (F) running 46's again after a time being exclusively 100% NTT and so on.

It's obvious equipment swapping will happen again with incoming fleet and confirmation that most of the 32's will be kicking their arses for another 7 years or so.

  22. Also, remember why the 32s are on the (J) line in the first place, so the HVACs can breathe. Sending them to Jamaica negates that purpose unless the trains run exclusively on the (F). Both the (E) and (R) are fully underground routes so they're out. You can take the (F) out of the equation as well since Transit will try to not the oldest trains on one of the most demanding lines.

I get what you're saying but transit does run the 2nd oldest active fleet(not counting the R-42's) since there are less than 50 or thereabouts on the (A) which are the R-46's and the (A) is a very high demanding line. They're 40 years old and yet the (A) has a 32 popping up every now and then. When talking HVAC's they would be fine on the (F) exclusively because just like the (A) the majority of the trip is underground, so sending a few to Jamaica would make sense ONLY if they're exclusive for the (F).
