  1. The Bx18 is being split with GH next week however I don't see that lasting too long. The deadhead to/from the depot is way too long and there isn't a single 40 ft GH route that ends in the area. The minute that service gets spotty, riders will start complaining like when it had a KB/WF split. Splitting or losing routes, will cause a loss of 40 ft buses ultimately. When you say a ton of space on Broadway do you mean on-street parking? Otherwise, there aren't any vacant lots in the area that could be used for expansion. They have the annex lot at the end of 215 Street but it's not that big. Also there's a difference between having a bus shortage and being at max capacity. There were times when 290-310 buses ran out the depot and it was fine, so give them Novas when they come in and hold on to a couple 6x00s for service increases. I'm sure there will be a massive route shuffle come jan when MCH reopens, I just hope they get the Bx32 back. If you think the KB service is bad now, be thankful you weren't around when the ex-CAS 95s tried to take on those hills and lost miserably or the 8800s that would kneel and never get back up.
  2. I was asking for the definition of a "Super Express" so if it's defined as BM5 stated as a bus that "goes express from an earlier point on the route until after the traditional express segment", then the Riverdale Av runs wouldn't be deemed Super Expresses. My comment was that historically the BxM3 never had a rollsign (LLE)/designation sign(MTA BUS) or schedule notation that its runs were Super Expresses (IIRC there were also 2 runs from Gun Hill on the 11 that didn't either). The Bxm4B was the Katonah Express and I did not mention the Bxm1 because we all know its runs also received the designation. BM5: As for the BxM4 extension wouldn't it get more riders going up Kimball?
  3. What's the definition of a Super Express? The Bxm3 runs never received that designation from LLE or MTA Bus and I always wondered if it had to do with the lack of a PM service variant. There was a high potential for buses to be SRO prior to hitting Van Cortlandt Village/Kingsbridge Heights (Despite MTA labeling the Bxm3 never stops in Kingsbridge) so with split runs everyone got a seat. The Bxm4A/B were never as packed and it didn't help that they had to run a through 4B right after the SE. MTA Bus has been chipping at the Y/O routes for a while with little service improvements so full Bxm3 runs and a Bxm4 extension might save the ridership. They already have to DH along Yonkers Av to get to Woodlawn but how many stops and where? (BL stops aren't on Google Maps so idk)
  4. Excluding the transfer stations, the line North of Burnside has more ridership so why wouldn't express service be beneficial if implemented correctly? Expresses from Woodlawn, locals from Burnside with a few through locals. What does running the BL-20 overnight have to do with the BxM4 extension?
  5. It seemed like it was setup to fail running express from Bedford Park, when the could have easily made all stops to/from Burnside and then run express
  6. Communities aren't all homogenous, how are you sure that your definition of "enough Riverdalians" guarantees a statistically accurate sample size to enable you to generalize and speak for the entire population? Besides, someone struggling to make ends meet in Tremont could plausibly have the same values with regards to transportation as an middle class Riverdalian because they are both Bronxites (you are one as well). Walkability is horrible in most of the N.W. Bronx unless you're an active person. Long blocks, massive hills and dreadful city steps but its still a beautiful place regardless of the socioeconomic composition of the other neighborhoods. As for my strolls through Fieldston I said "many" not a "few", and if that was the sole basis for my comments, your attempts to invalidate my remarks would be successful. However, you didn't live there when I was riding the Bx24 through there as a kid. I understand the fact that times change but you can't ignore the fact that it was allowed before and there had to be a logical reason for why it was allowed. As for the privately owned streets, you have brought me to the most important question: is 253 Street one of them? If it is, then the MTA and FPOA managed to come to an agreement in the past and its plausible in the future. I should have specified that I meant East with regards to Fieldston Road, as they are geographically closer to the Bx9, so I apologize for that but could you explain "Riverdale (upstairs)"? Also, you haven't actually commented on any of the transportation remarks I've made: 1. The shortcomings of the original Bx24 and how it was able run on 253 St until 1995 2. The possibility of a northern extension of the Bx20 to provide Mosholu Av (not Fieldston Estate) with service either via the old Bx24 route or 256 St in both directions (which would end the layover in front of the estates main entrance) 3a. The possibility of an alteration of the southern end of the Bx20 to serve Bailey Av S/o 231 St to provide service to an area currently lacking it. Ideally I would suggest sending it via the old 24 to Fordham Plaza foreseeing an increase of shoppers coming from the EAST to the new shopping plazas along Broadway that the Bx9 won't be able to handle (reasons previously stated). 3b. Terminate the Bx20 at Inwood-207 St so S. Riverdale/Sputyen Duyvil riders can still get the A but run it via 231-Bailey-Sedgwick-Fordham-207. If spaced properly, the reroute would have 10 stops after 231/kingsbridge av (the same amount it does now) to Inwood. The downside there is it can't help the Bx9 as much because it's not making any new bus connections, and it might add ~3-5 mins to the run (more if the Deegan is a parking lot). @IRT Bronx Express: Thanks! I was slightly off on the headways but still no way to run a route if you want it to work.
  7. You live in Riverdale close to Fieldston, as in adjacent to, nearby or surrounding but not inclusive of the area. You cannot assure me on matters pertaining to this because for all purposes the 2 neighborhoods are separate entities thus you aren't included in the affected demographic. If there's any anecdotal proof of that being one of the reasons for which the service was discontinued, I would be interested in reading it. I've taken many strolls through Fieldston and can only recount a few instances wherein it was closed off and primarily due to street work. However, the particular street we are discussing, is the northern boundary street and not one that I've ever seen blocked off. Blocking off that section of 253 Street from HH Pkwy E to Fieldston Rd would entail closing off the exit/entrance on the HH Pkwy, which could be done but off the top of my head HH Pkwy N/B doesn't have electronic signs in that area to quickly notify motorists of a diversion. With regards to Fieldston and bus service (be it the old Bx24, extension of the Bx20 or a new concept), a bus parading through would imply that it is frequently stopping and moving slowly along a meandering route. As you know there's no sidewalk along any part of 253 St and no lights so its automatically closed door and the estate wasn't/wouldn't be served. If anything it was only for those who lived on Fieldston N/o HH Pkwy or the surrounding blocks East so they wouldn't have to walk downhill to Broadway or uphill to Riverdale Av. Any reincarnation of the Bx24's northern end doesn't even need to run on 253 St as running 256 to Mosholu both ways and terminating at Broadway would be better for connections, however its still a possibility. Riverdale is a part of the Bronx, Marble Hill is the only neighborhood that is debatable given the diversion of the Harlem River. Yes you may be allowed to write Riverdale, NY on your mail just like Queens residents write Glen Oaks, NY but you won't see any "Welcome to Riverdale" signs as the Bx7,10,20 climb the hill because as far everyone else is concerned you are politically, geographically and demographically affiliated with The Bronx. As for Riverdale shoppers not finding Broadway viable due to socioeconomic differences, this the opinion of one non-native Riverdalian and once again without data you can't assure me that most do as you suggested above. If you reread my post, my concern was primarily for those shoppers along the Bx9 which is inclusive of but not limited to East Riverdale residents. I suggested diverting the Bx20 south of 231 because the only thing losing ridership faster than it is the Bx33 (which given the rise of SoBro might change) and new routing by new shopping centers/unserved areas = new ridership. It would benefit the Bronx as a whole.
  8. Not trying to beat a dead horse here, but the MTA just screwed it up originally. From a connectivity stand point it should have granted Riverdale riders the option of a quicker ride to the 4 and D trains at Fordham than the Bx10 to Bedford Park and taken pressure off of the Bx9/10/12 because of the overlapping route. However, it failed on both accounts. Unless you lived directly along the route or saw one coming this was the textbook definition of a route no one waited for. I don't have my 1994/5 map in front of me but IIRC the headways ranged from 24-48 mins and the service hours were 9-5 MF, 10-4 Sa. Besides that, HH Pkwy/Johnson Av never needed nor will they ever need 3 local routes. The only 2 portions it served standalone were the northern part in Fieldston and along Sedgwick/Bailey Avs between 231 and Fordham. On the north end it never stopped in Fieldston on 253 St and had only 1-2 other stops apart from the terminal. On Sedgwick/Bailey it was partial covered by the Bx12 when the UH bridge was out and when/where it wasn't covered there was nothing to attract ridership. 225 Street was just Marble Hill Houses and an abandoned hospital at that time. Now there's River Plaza on 225 and 2 shopping centers being built at 230 and 238 Sts, I don't believe the Bx9 will be able to handle that extra traffic alone. You can't add more service N/o 225 because 242 is an ineffective terminal during the day and 262 doesn't need the service, theres no feasible option for LTD service and it bunches horribly. With Bx20 ridership dropping, I would consider re-routing it to the old Bx24 route bet. 231 St and Fordham Plaza. I know someone will complain about the loss of a direct seat from HH Pkwy to the A but Riverdale riders on the Bx9 have to take the 1 to the A. Bailey Av s/o albany cres is isolated from public transportation for the most part. As far as Fieldston being against a bus on 253 Street 20 years later be it open or closed door, no one knows the validity of that statement unless they are an active member of the association. Whether or not Fordham Rd needs the coverage is debatable.
  9. Sorry about that I was walking up Bway sunday night and I saw a 603x making the turn at 9Av/ 215 St with a CS sticker on the right side and the last digit looked 2 but I was mistaken
  10. With the BxM18 extension to Getty Square I feel like the only riders you would get would be those who either currently take the Bxm3 or W8 and transfer to the Bxm18. might as well run it via the BxM3 north of City Line and have it use Valentine Ln to get between Riverdale Av and Bway. That way you don't have to add any new stops. I agree that the Bxm4 should run on the Concourse but the stops should be on the inner roadway if at all possible. I'm iffy on eliminating service south of Tremont solely because I've seen 165 get used somewhat frequently. The Bx16 should be the sole route serving Woodlawn creating a one seat ride from Eastchester to Fordham. You can have runs as Fordham Ctr-Mundy Lane; Norwood-Eastchester; Fordham Ctr-Eastchester.
  11. The Bxm4A didn't work because there isn't much on W Gun Hill, The stop at Sedgwick & Dickenson isn't that far from the Bxm3 which has better service and lastly despite it saying it ended at Lehman College, it ended at 205 & Paul which is a dead area outside of school hours. Woodlawn riders kept the 4B alive but if you tried to take it off the concourse I doubt it'd get enough ridership (hence why those Super Express runs got canned). Theres no real way to get an express route from Manhattan to Woodlawn without using the Concourse. You can't run the route through the W. Bronx because there's the Bxm3 (plus no need for service south of Fordham) and you can't run it through the East Bronx because it's going overlap the Bxm11 which people already complain about overlapping the 2 train. Webster and 3rd Avenue are the only other 2 major N-S thoroughfares and I'd doubt express service would fly over there. I don't know where you read that express buses are supposed to use the highway because a good portion of the QM routes don't E/B, the difference is that they aren't on the service road. Which IMO is the issue: running buses that are supposed to have shorter rides (i.e limiteds and expresses) on the service road is ineffective. If the cost per ride for the express bus was a bit more reasonable more riders on the Concourse would use it but thats another discussion Re: The Bx13 you can still have some runs go to 161/3rd but really they should just add more Bx6 service. I suggested switching the Bx7 and Bx10 because the latter's winding route causes most of its delays and it needs to be streamlined VG8: Cutting 220 St is one thing, cutting the Inwood service altogether... I don't think so. While it may still be in Manhattan there's no direct service to the East Side. And telling someone to take the uptown to get Metro North to go downtown wouldn't help them if they needed to go between 125-42. Thats 2 fares and Metro north ticket as opposed one express bus which pass through the neighborhood anyway.
  12. I actually think a Bx3 Limited would work with the above proposed stops. The manhattan portion of the route (Grant/174-Bway/181) needs bus lanes honestly and some place to park off of 181. You have 5 buses using 1 lane of traffic in each direction, which is already a problem without the addition of traffic and the fire house by Amsterdam. Elsewhere the problem isn't the fact that two buses left the GWB 6 minutes apart and got to Grant/174 at the same time (Southbound this happens at Fordham). Its the fact that because both buses were 6 minutes apart, they both look like rolling cans of sardines and have to make every stop. There aren't any transfers at 176 or 183, skipping them would speed up the rides of those going long distances and give people going shorter distances a better chance of getting on the bus. Some of the locals would have to run the full route though. That or give the route Artics with the current headways. It makes no sense that none of the rush hour runs use them, apart from that horrible turnaround at 238 St (and they can make it). As for the Bxm1 stop at West 230 St & Broadway, its okay to eliminate/combine this stop but 220 St gets to stay? I actually see more people using Bway/230 than Corlear and putting the stop at KB avenue, makes those using the routes who live east have to walk further and more likely to miss their bus. Fixing the light sequence is simpler. With 220, no one's using it point blank. Not to get to Allen Pavillion, Baker Field, KB bus depot, or that car wash. Theres pretty much nothing else of use nearby. The people I know that live in the back of Inwood would always use 207 St and walk up Seaman. They have 215 St on the 1 right there and the fact that it has the lowest ridership out of all 1 stations kind of tells me the inhabitants aren't that pressed for express bus service. If you want to keep buses on schedule take that stop out. If anything I've been wondering why 225 St wasn't made a stop on the Bxm1 for the connection to Metro North/River Plaza. My suggestions Bx7 via HH Pkwy (rush hour short runs (246-207)) Bx10 (Riverdale Av-231-Bailey-VCW-Sedgwick-Goulden-BPB-Jerome-Gun Hill-Bainbridge) Bx13 extended to 149-GC via River Av Bx37 Mosholu Av/Bway-256 St-HH Pkwy-Kappock-Johnson-231-KB-230-Bway-225-Bailey-Sedgwick-Fordham (cans the Bx20, alleviates the Bx9 of riders going between Marble Hill and Fordham)
  13. Do they usually re-decal bus that are temporarily moved? I'm not sure how long it's been at KB, but 5922 has KB decals.
  14. It was on the Q50 today w/ECH stickers around 7:30 flying up Bruckner with the number plate on the back bent halfway off.
  15. Not sure if it was mentioned but 6122 was on the Bx3 tonight still with West Farms stickers
  16. I completely forgot about that well Bx25 and no one uses the Bx20. At least this way you get another route that links River Plaza to the Central Bx
