  1. The line is more likely to get PA5 cars than anything else, because PA5 are FRA cleared, and they are about to make about a hundred or so of them for PATH. If they did that, they could do dual mode cat/3rdrail trains or modify the HBLR cars to run on 3rd rail as well and bam there ya go. Not likely, but possible.

  2. ROW is the property that a transportation company owns/operates on and through. It can include many acres of land, or just the land the track sits on plus a minimal clearance area to each side. ROW can also mean something with road or marine traffic. The rules and laws governing ROW usage and operation are somewhat complicated, but for heavy rail subway etc basically it means you can put track down, build infrastructure to support rolling stock, its storage, upkeep, etc. Sunnyside yard is the largest ROW in an urban area, and only exists as we know it because PRR bought the land before the area was developed as it is today. LIRR west side yard ROW only applies to the grade of the yard and not air rights, some ROW retain air rights for future expansion of structures & services, or to maintain the loading gauge for proper clearances. :P

  3. Railroad law can be found at the FRA website, but i can say now 3rd rail etc doesn't matter, a railroad ROW in my opinion is able to carry freight and passengers. LIRR sees freight overnight, MNRR sees freight all the time, and SIR USED to be a heavily utilized freight line. PATH's ROW also sees freight usage, but it is all most isolated from the national rail network, so it is somewhat at risk of losing heavy rail status under the FRA rules. I personally don't think they will bother changing the rules for SIR or PATH because the system could be used for freight in the future.

  4. To add on to that, I remember being scared when I saw a strange looking lady walked into the front cab with a limp about to operate the train, but then I saw that the driver on another train arriving didn't have a uniform on, and realized that SIRT engineers don't seem to wear any uniforms for some reason...

I rarely see railroad (yes its a railroad) drivers/engineers wearing any type of official clothing. They are usually dressed very casually with a "i work for ___ and drive trains" ID usually around their neck or pinned to shirt. PATH drivers can be a craps shoot of how they are dressed, but they usually have some kind of "nice" clothes on and a driver's cap, but they do it because the PATH system has different security rules for employees.

  5. According to several sites (i believe including forgotten-ny.com) they are in the process of installing fare control, and updating existing implementations along the entire route. I believe this means smart link card upgrades are going to be seen soon as well. It'd be nice to hear from someone with info on this project have their input here to see what exactly is going on.

  6. the SIR is a POS and a waste you only pay at St. George board at any other station you ride free no turnstyles i guess thats why they think they should ride the bus for free out there talk about the MTA losing MONEY

Actually only 2 stations didn't have turnstiles, and they were being installed last i heard.

  7. Cool photos!

The day NJT decides to run HBLR to SI, HBLR SHOULD and WILL run on that line.

Remember, the Bayonne Bridge has provisions for rail to run on it. And also, PANYNJ wants to build a new Bayonne Bridge, so they can build it with provisions for HBLR to run on it.

I have a feeling a new bridge will have both PATH and (NJT) light rail running on it, especially with the PA5 cars coming into play.

Maybe one side will have catenary, and the other side 3rd rail?

  8. That's why I say, "I'm catching the train".......You can't get on the subway, or be hit by the subway, but the train you can get on and be hit by.

I usually say i'm getting the (E) train, and i never refer to the rail cars as subway, as subway is the rail system, not the equipment. :)

Gonna do that in may or june. Should be fun. Gonna take (NJT) to NYP, then take the (1) to south ferry & staten island ferry to the SIR station. Should be fun! Will take lots of photos!!

  10. After reviewing the disappeared northern SIRT branch on forgotten-ny.com, it seems the tracks and right of way are built over by houses and parks and stuff, i think it'd have to be built as a light rail installment along Richmond Terrace. This being said, i think NJT needs to extend light rail to EWR as well, and tie in the whole thing with new light rail tracks, using DMU, since the gauge is the same, you could simply put a switch to head it down the re-activated freight right of way, even if more track had to be put in to keep freight traffic from interfering with light rail service (if this makes any sense?). I've studied the paths that the NLR and SIR extensions would have to make to do all this, and it seems totally possible and practical. Also, there are several old freight lines that run under i-95 between Arthur Kill and EWR, but the lines seem to go through (though with some distance between) the oil storage areas, and may because of security reasons stay freight only, or unused entirely.
