It's very, very rare an operator will have a different sign up "by accident". If it's a different route, and someone comes and corrects you, then that's fine. There's many times that it's justified. There's also times the dispatcher will order the operator to put up a short-turn sign to push folks onto the bus behind you just to get you back on track. It happens.
Passenger: "you're only going to Eastern Parkway?"
Me: "No, I'm going to Eastern Parkway."
