  1. You need to explain why you think a closed peice of software offers better security.

     

     

    Because the open-ness is easier for hackers to hack.

     

    Keep in mind, there are a lot of 3rd party developers and hackers working on Google Android so it's much more prone to hackers developing workable stuff easily, then send a faulty link, a governmental worker clicking on it, it installs something in the device, the something gains remote access to the device and trouble comes and many private conversations and portions of documents can be spilled out .

     

    For Apple iOS, it's much more difficult, you have to unlock and jailbreak the device first, which no typical governmental worker would do, then go thru a much more complex system that could potentially brick the device instead of allowing the remote access app to gain access to whats in the device, further protecting what the governmental workers doesn't want us to know.

  2. Linux is open and it's considered more secure than Windows. Openness creates BETTER security because it can be scrutinized by more people as opposed to security by obscurity.

     

     

    Keep in mind, this is the Government using a consumer level smartphone so you need a good level of security, Open Source might not be the best.

  3. Well, the iPhone is as reliable as Blackberry so they aren't making any mistakes, they could go with Windows Phone, but the real problem is the lack of apps. Truth is the Android eco-system is not going to be as secure, don't get me wrong, they did consider Androids, but the problem is security and Android's overall "open-ness" and surely we don't want our nation's secrets revealed...

    The Verge - "It's only been about a month since we last got together for an Apple product announcement, but the company has more numbers to share with us. The big news is that 200 million devices are now running iOS 6, just over a month after the launch of the new OS. Apple CEO Tim Cook also touted three million new iPods sold since they were released in the last few weeks. As we heard earlier, the iPhone 5 sold more than five million phones in the first weekend = Cook said this was the fastest-selling phone in history, period.

     

    He also talked about some iCloud features, noting that 125 million documents were placed in the cloud — and a whopping 300 million iMessages have been sent, 28,000 per second. From the App Store, Cook said that there are now 275,000 iPad-designed apps, and customers have now downloaded 35 billion apps from the store, paying $6.5 billion out to developers. Cook also gave some iBooks stats, not something we hear from Apple terribly often. There are now 1.5 billion books available in the store, with 400 million books downloaded since the launch of the store in April of 2010."

  5. (Reuters) - "The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE) said it will end its contract with BlackBerry maker Research In Motion Ltd in favor of Apple Inc's iPhone, dealing a new blow to RIM just months before it launches a vital new device.

     

    The agency said in a solicitation document posted last week that it intends to buy iPhones for more than 17,600 employees - a purchase worth $2.1 million.

     

    The agency said it has relied on RIM for eight years, but the company "can no longer meet the mobile technology needs of the agency."

     

    It also said it analyzed Apple's iOS-based devices and Google Inc's Android operating system and concluded that, for the near term, Apple's iPhone services offer the best technology for the agency because of Apple's tight controls of the hardware platform and operating system.

     

    The agency said the iPhone will be used by a "variety of agency personnel, including, but not limited to, Homeland Security Investigations, Enforcement and Removal Operations and Office of the Principal Legal Advisor employees."

  6. This might be the length of an article but...

     

    The iPhone 5 is a great phone, iOS 6 is a great OS, but at the end, it all comes down to preferences and what you need. I'll break it down to many sections regarding each of the specifics.

     

    iPhone 5

     

    Okay, you might be considering this device, so what's my recommendations? If you are a person entering the smartphone market, love iTunes, and love the overall feel of iOS 6 or if you are a person who owns any phone before and including the iPhone 4 (NOT THE 4S) and love Apple's system, then the iPhone 5 is right for you.

     

    However, if you own a 4S like me, I wouldn't upgrade because the only thing you're getting is LTE, slightly faster performance and an extra row of icons, battery life is on par. Also, if you didn't upgrade to iOS 6 just yet on your 4S, you'll still have the lovely Google Maps and Ad-Free YouTube Experience right at the palm of your hand. Also, if you are considering Android, Windows Phone or Blackberry, then I suggest you to wait and make a final decision.

     

    So what's the trade off with the iPhone 5? Your old 30-pin cords and such, including those in your car, your home entertainment system and all the accessories and travel cords are going to be useless if you don't have another iPod or iPhone around with the 30-pin connector or the Lightning to 30pin Adapter. Also, the headphone jack is relocated to the bottom of the phone so if you like the original position of the headphone jack, then you're outta luck. Also, all the pricey cases you invested in will no longer work. Let's dig deeper into iOS 6 shall we?

     

    iOS 6.0

     

    So you love the iOS platform, Siri and the clean and clutter-free iOS experience. You might have also checked out blogs, perhaps the WWDC 2012 and September iPhone 5 launch event and such on the iOS 6 platform. But you might also have heard about the new Apple Maps problems and YouTube's new app being buggy as hell. Well, you still love iOS don'tcha? Well, if you wouldn't mind to have a slightly bad maps experience, and perhaps YouTube experience, then you'll be fine with iOS 6.0.

     

    If you actually live on Google Maps or use it frequently, and like an Ad-Free YouTube experience, then I'm afraid you have to do a run to several AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, Virgin Mobile or Apple Store to get an iPhone 4S with iOS 5.1.1. For Canada, Rogers, Bell, Telus, Fido, Koodoo, Virgin Mobile or Apple Store for an iPhone 4S with iOS 5.1.1. And the amount of device is limited because people are frantically rushing into stores to grab a device with iOS 5.1.1 thanks to the Mapsgate Fiasco.

     

    The Verdict

     

    It all comes down to preferences, I have the iPhone 4S, I expected this Mapsgate thing to happen, and I expected the new YouTube app to make more money outta ya. Surely I am currently iOS, but Android, Windows Phone and Blackberry are all on par but each OS is good at some stuff and bad on some stuff. I might not know it all, but I do know better is relative, and it all comes down to personal preferences. Happy Phone Shopping!

    Car Body Exterior & Interior- Stainless Steel, design will feature a blue strip wrapping the entire car with the NYC logo embedded in the middle of the car on each side. The Front will have a blue color and the graphics will be similar to the ones featured on the R142/142A's with pixelated dots below the cab windows. The doors will be four pairs (or three wide pairs) on each side, and full doors for emergency crossings between cars. The cab ends of the A cars will have a 6 degree inward slant for enhanced aerodynamics and improve efficiency. The route display LED will be multicolor and have denser pixels and feature the regular route bullets e.g. (E)(D)(R). The FIND will feature dual LCD screens (one for (MTA) information/Route information and some ads, the other will be current weather, sports, top national news and some ads like how the PA5 has. The seats will be slightly bucket in order to prevent "butt shifting" during acceleration and deceleration. The walls will have a light gunmetal gray accent, the floors will be speckled blue instead of speckled red like the current R-160's, the seats will be blue like the PA5's and window frames and the car ends will continue to be stainless steel. There will be folding seats at the ends of each car (or before the first door and after the last door) so wheelchair customers and strollers have better access and room.

    The Verge (San Francisco, CA) - "The new iPhone is finally official. Apple has named its sixth-generation smartphone the iPhone 5 and Phil Schiller has detailed its full set of features, specs, and release details. Measuring 7.6mm in thickness and 112 grams in weight, this is the thinnest and lightest iPhone that Apple has ever made, and is constructed "entirely" out of glass and aluminum. The new iPhone looks pretty much identical to all the leaks and mockups we've seen in the past few weeks — evidently Apple wasn't able to keep a lid on its most anticipated product, after all.

     

    And yes, it has a 4-inch display! The new screen resolution is the oft-rumored 1136 x 640, meaning the display of the iPhone 4 and 4S has simply been elongated, both physically and in terms of pixel rows. To quote Phil, "you see, we're able to add a fifth row of icons." All of Apple's own software has been updated for the new resolution and screen size, while third-party apps will be letterboxed where necessary. Also in line with pre-launch rumors, the new iPhone's display features in-cell touchscreen technology, integrating the touch sensors right into the display itself. This should make for a thinner panel overall, though Apple also touts it as "the most accurate display in the industry."

     

    There's also LTE connectivity, with a single chip, single radio, and what Apple describes as a "dynamic" antenna. Sprint, Verizon, and AT&T LTE flavors will all be supported by the iPhone 5. Apple rates this new handset's battery life at 8 hours of LTE web browsing."

Q23 should go to the airport since it's literally just an overpass away from it, I've seen multiple riders walk across the overpass to get to LGA, however it should just serve the Passenger Air Terminals. Really, it isn't literally a duplicate to the Q72 in anyways considering that it just parallels it and that people who go to LGA still make use of it rather than not. I am pretty sure if I walk to them and ask them, they would flat out reject the Q72 too. As for Q69, never been on it, but I would say it could get more riders if it does serve LGA like the Q23 would too. Q101 won't do because it serves it's purposes and does it well, same for Q49. Plus, if the Q23 does go to LGA, maybe Q49 riders could transfer to it to get to LGA!

  11. Yeah sure 3rd rail is fine as is compared to catenary. 3rd rail is a trashcan. Thats why in continental europe they ripped up 3rd rail on non-subway lines decades ago and installed catenary. Its not that cost prohibitive; The upgrade of the NY-Boston route for HSR for 2 billion dollars in the 90s included electrification. how much could adding catenary for 15 miles between the end of the NHV line and GCT really cost?

     

     

    I would say that one type of third rail is fine, that's the one used on Metro-North Railroad. Under-running third rail is safer to track workers and much more weather-proof than over-running third rail on the LIRR. As for catenery, it's on par with under-running third rail, mainly because catenery uses regular wire cables that are prone to weather related damages. If I had the guts and the money, I'd rip out all the over-running third rail on the LIRR and replace them with under-running ones, mainly because it'll be a slight benefit for the LIRR and an overall benefit to the (MTA) Railroads because it streamlines the fleets.

    - the commentary behind w/e 45, 47a, and "70" you're talking about, I don't know what it entails.....

     

    - As far as what you say here about the his "51", yeah that's a good point.... but from what I gather, there is a need for local service along Yellowstone.... Realistically however, they're not gonna run another route through forest hills (regardless of what areas it serves on w/e end).... so that's why they most likely had the 23 routed the way it is, instead of it staying on yellowstone, towards the forest view crescent apts......

     

    I wonder what the history is behind/involving the Q23 route/routing......

     

     

    The 45, 47A and 70 are all routes mentioned before my post by other users in their Google Maps thingies, you have to refer to those maps to understand better.

     

    Yep for the 51, and I agree that there isn't a need for local bus service along Yellowstone, the area sees relatively low ridership considering that the Q23 as said is in place. As for the history, it seems like the Q23 is mainly a route serving and connecting residential areas to business centers, though you have to ask the guys at the Triboro to get all the details.

     

    It doesn't end in Jamaica, though. You have some short-turns that end there, but the full route is to South Jamaica.

     

     

    You can say the same for East New York, North East New York.

  13. LIRR DMs should've been catenary powered. The catenary is in Penn Station and the tunnels, and with that you won't have incidents like that one with the pushcart.

     

    In my opinion, LIRR would be better off with a Catenary System or Under-Running Third Rails. However, this conversion would be very expensive considering that the LIRR has Over-Running Third Rails in the entire "electric" system east of Sunnyside Yard.

     

    I'd be all for a ALP46 dashing to Huntington while ALP45DP's go to Port Jeff, Montauk and such if it is the case, =P.

  14. It's technically not ENY tho... and they already have the Q60 passing there which goes to south Jamaica, so what's the difference?

     

     

     

    I want to split the Q38, the other half would still be Q38...

     

     

    1.) It is around there still, and Jamaica has a mixed reputation, on one side you have the Estates which scream premium, on the other side of Hillside, you have the LIRR, JFK Airtrain and a number of governmental buildings and some ghetto/-ish, so you can't really say it's a no-go, especially since the LIRR, (E) and (F) goes there too! While on the other hand, East New York has a horrible reputation and one worser than even Brownsville and the worst part of Harlem so I am pretty sure you'll see a lot of people in CB6 opposing this route.

     

    2) That would be counter-productive since you have two routes that could share equiptment and interline when it is already doing what it supposed to do but in a unified route number. I don't see it a cost saving to the (MTA) in any way what-so-ever, sorry but it's true.

  15. As a person familiar with the areas, I would submit my opinions on the routes:

     

    Q51 - As much as this route is kinda like a "Jackie Robinson Parkway parallel route", it's not going to sit well for Forest Hillans, especially since it goes to East New York, as we know it, BULLET BULLET EAST NUUU YAWK.

     

    Q53X - As much as this route is probably going to be like a revival for the good ol' days, I think that a Q53 Semi-Express or Super-Limited might do, but the Court Square Branch would be eliminated since it's redundant. The bus will run like all Q53's north of Queens Blvd. and in the Rockaways, however the only stops stopped at on Woodhaven/Cross Island will be: Metropolitan Ave., Jamaica Ave., Rockaway Blvd/Liberty Ave., N/S Conduit Ave.

     

    Q45 - No need, unless if you seriously want to uselessly renumber the Q38, and cut it in half, with the other being the Q45E...

     

    Q47A - No need, this route wouldn't gain much ridership since the bus is not the same as the taxi.

     

    Q70 - No need, (L) -> (M) -> Duh! Plus, not much people will look forward to go to Jackson Heights, more will go to LIC, Flushing and the Rego Park Shopping Area.

  16. I highly recommend Canon for budget models [or typically Sub-$235] Point & Shoots since there is no frills and compromises in photo and video shooting, and you'll like the results. For advanced [super-zoom & such] Point & Shoots, it's debatable between Canon and Nikon, although I personally like the results of Canon better than Nikon. As for Pro Point & Shoots, DSLR and Semi-Pro Rage, it's also debatable, however I like Canon's quick access menu overall for fast and fluid shooting and getting the results I want rather than having to fiddle around and perhaps miss my shot with Nikon's often pointlessly complex menu system [although I am getting used to it].

  17. Not to say the M9's aren't needed, but shouldn't the LIRR focus on the diesels first? I remember them saying last year that it costs way too much to mantain the locs of the C3's. If they want to cut costs, shouldn't they look at replacing those with less costly locs first?

     

     

    They're looking into DMU's or Diesel Multiple Units for scoot service, but really the truth is that the DE/DM30's suck, the LIRR should've gone with GE Genesis as Dual Mode Locomotives and PL42AC's Diesel Electric Locomotives instead.
