I refer to this place with others a lot because for one...it shows how far the scene has come. Back then it was actually different in which, there were many people who worked on the inside in the business. There were many people in that place who volunteered in museums and such. There were also lots of old timers who knew what they were talking about and were passionate in what they did and were interested in sharing this to anyone who cared to want to know why and how.

IRM holds many events that have really, absolutely nothing to do with transit. They hold events that attract thousands and thousands and thousands of visitors. Hence the great about of money. Transit Museum here back home tries to attract others, with Trivia Night and even a Karaoke event a while back.

Even nycsubway.org has a facebook page. But the problem with them is that they keep their group (unintentionally) as a secret, unseachable group. This hinders the need for new, fresh, curious faces who may share our interests and may want to know more. Many museums across the nation should also take note of this as well. Look at the Illinois Railway Museum. They collect a huge amount of equipment. But it’s not all just about rails and buses.

Why was R17 #6609 preserved? what's so special about it? The goal here is to bring to light a community, to bring in new faces and fresh blood , to allow a broader audience to become interested in the things that we’re interested in; we’re not simply annoying railfans or busfans. We are a community – an active, social community. Granted, we have a Facebook page. But how many people actually use it or have even seen it?

Another thought, the community in general has to open up to a broader audience. Case in point, one of the reasons why I started a database of preserved rail equipment is because I wanted to put together something that is accessible not just to us railfans, but to a bigger audience. I don't just give a list of what's saved and what's not, but I try to give each item a narrative; for example, how did it come about that we have, say, a number of Arnines saved?

You do raise a point yourself, also. For me, for example, I participate in taking and sharing photos because it is a hobby I enjoy doing. Because one or two people bring about nonsense about that, doesn’t mean I should stop doing what I enjoy. No one can take that away from anyone. And for anyone reading this, always remember that. No one can take that away from you, because you own that. It’s yours. And you can do what you want with it.
