Department of Subways - Proposals/Ideas
shiznit1987 replied to EE Broadway Local's topic in New York City Subway
Enough with the service cuts 😁. Here's a thought I had for a new turnstile design: The turnstile would feature saloon style doors like seen on Philly's Patco or the London Underground: https://cazort.net/photos/gates-PATCO-8th-street-station In this plan there would be two sets of them: The first set would be in the open position and the second set would be closed. A customer would walk up to the turnstile and tap their OMNY/Metrocard and the first set of doors would close behind them, then the second set that is in front of them would open up. After a second, the second (fare control) set of doors would close and the first (outside fare control) set of doors would open to await the next passenger. This would prevent people trying to push in behind individuals with door-style turnstiles, plus doesn't limit capacity the same way HEETs do. I know you might be wondering about exiting passengers, I would have more iron madiens installed that are specifically exit only. -

I wasn't sure how this fits within the context of this board, but since I wanted to talk ideas I'll place it here: http://www.ridersny.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/doomsday-on-the-mta-compressed.pdf Riders Alliance released a "Doomsday Map" of the subway w/o another federal bailout. While a sad and morbid thought amongst us fans of the subway, it did get me thinking: If I was MTA Chairman, what would I cut? Personally, this map is bogus. Here's my thoughts: 1) Right off the bat, anything on the IRT (except the of course) would be totally untouchable. The only thing maybe would be getting rid of the Dyre Ave line and making the a rush hour/midday supplement to the . 2) The having the QB Express all to itself is intriguing. I'd close down the entirely and just have the run to Lefferts/Far Rock, with the being the Fulton Local to Euclid. Both would run down 53rd St. The CPW, Concourse, Culver, 63rd Street, and Inwood-207th St lines would all be shut down. 3) Broadway would have just the , the runs from Forest Hills to Bay Ridge via QB Local, Broadway Local, Lower Manhattan, 4th Ave Local and the runs Astoria, 59th St, Broadway express/Bridge, Brighton Line (rush hour express offered). Both the Sea Beach and SAS are abandoned. 4) The , with no where to go above Midtown, would turn around at Bryant Park-42nd St after coming from Coney Island via West End (No changes). 5) The are all goners. There, that's your doomsday subway.... -
Nice pics. Somehow seeing these make me think of normalcy.

IMHO, to me the solution is for trains to simply go OOS at certain terminals so as to make it legal to remove individuals from the trains themselves. Correct me if I'm wrong, but if a train pulls into Coney Island, 71st, Euclid or anywhere else there is a yard I believe the NYPD would have every right to say "nap time over" if the train is going to be going into a non-revenue area. There they can be cleaned, UV'd, scrubbed and sent back on it's way. No need for shutdowns. The issue is for years trains simply went back and forth without going into the yards so that gave the homeless hours upon end to set up shop and get some Zzzzs on board. If trains went OOS after a round trip that'd break up some of that.

Nice convo going about the digital map, I didn't know so much would go into it. Anyway, if we installed switches on both sides of Woodside-61st and Junction Blvd, could we have bi-directional service on weekends? -

I think the plan might be to disable emergency exits that are not near the main token booth. Both the entrance at Jamaica Center and the one at Woodhaven Blvd I used were far away from the main token booth. I wonder if these kinds of entrances will eventually see the return of HEETs -

Is the MTA bolting emergency exits? Yesterday I went to grab the at Jamaica Center and this couple tried to open the emergency exit to leave and couldn't. Then today I entered Woodhaven Blvd via the stairs at 92nd Ave and 2 MTA workers looked like they were working on the emergency door with a drill, like they were bolting it. -

Customer service idea: In stations, have a digital map that shows the layout of the system in real time, thus reflecting G.Os, closures, reroutes and other obstacles. Would make life a lot easier. -

To start, I just want to reiterate a thought I've expressed before: Phase 3 & 4 of the current SAS plan is useless. 2nd Ave is not part of the core Midtown CBD nor is it likely to become an office avenue like 3rd. If we are going to extend SAS south, we should consider routing it either onto 3rd or even Madison after 63rd street. Here's my thoughts: SAS continues down 2nd Ave to 57th St, turns down 57th with a stop @ Lexington Ave for the Trains. The line then turns down Madison with stops @ 50th, 42nd (Transfer to GCT), 34th, 23rd (Transfer ), then turns down 23rd, then continues back down 2nd Ave with stops @ 14th St, Houston St and Grand St before taking over the services over the Manhattan Bridge. The is sent over the Jamaica Line. So for Queens Blvd, most people here seem to want to send a 2nd Ave service thru 63st. Here's how my plan makes that happen: Gun Hill Rd Via Third Ave, Bx and Lower Level SAS express tracks -> Broadway Express No Changes Becomes full time Astoria route QB Express-> 63rd St -> Madison Ave Subway -> Brighton Express (cut back to Prospect Park Weekends/Nights) (U) 125th/Lex (Via SAS) -> Madison Ave Subway -> West End QB Local -> 53rd St -> 8th Ave Local QB Express -> 63rd St -> 6th Ave Local QB Local -> 53rd St -> 6th Ave Local No merges on Broadway. No merges on Queens Blvd. Just one merge added at junction of SAS and 63rd St. Broadway looks like this: express local and Queens Blvd looks like this: express local -
The problem lies with the dominio effect. Of the 5 top employers you listed 4 of them (City, DOE, MTA and HHC) are wholly dependent on NYC/NYS taxpayers. Any large scale exodus from NYC would put those jobs in major jeopardy, along with putting the kabosh on any large scale recovery of the service industry locally. If Wall St were to go totally remote, the loss of tax revenue from commerical real estate plus their employees pulling up stakes for other locales would be catastrophic. Do I think this will happen? No, for a few reasons. However, there's a certain arrogance in NYC that somehow people will put up with anything because "It's New York". The 1960s thru early 1980s dispelled that thoroughly.

Overnight Essential Bus Service Plan

Hey Via, what are your thoughts on having all of the various BM, QM and BxM routes run overnight? I think it would make a great substitute for the subway for many coming from far out places? -

First, upon further review, I am going to have the continue to 96st-2nd Ave and the run to Jamaica Center. Right now I'm thinking this would be the breakdown: 12tph Coney Island to Parsons Archer (Bway Exp, 63rd, QB Exp) 18tph Coney Island to 96th st-2nd Ave (Bway Exp) 20tph (Bway Local Astoria-Bay Ridge) 18tph (Route Unchanged) 12tph (Route Unchanged) 18tph (QB Local to Forest Hills) BTW, this allows for the possibility of maybe ~6tph Cluver Express on the in Brooklyn -

Here's another Queens Blvd plus Broadway De-interlining idea coming at ya: 96st-2nd Ave to Coney Island via Broadway Express Parsons-Archer to Coney Island via QB Express, 63rd St, Broadway Express Astoria-Ditmars to Bay Ridge via Broadway Local Unchanged QB Local to Forest Hills via 53rd St, 8th Ave Local Unchanged So you have zero merges on Broadway, No merge at 36th st, and No merge at Queens Plaza. You do however add a merge at 63rd-Lex. -

How Will Public Transit Survive the COVID-19 Crisis?
shiznit1987 replied to Italianstallion's topic in New York City Subway
I agree with those who say it's the buses that will take the greatest hit. I don't know about route cuts so much as maybe trimming back frequencies across the board like making the every 20 minutes on weekends (no more Bedford short turns), or making the every 10 minutes on weekends. -

Honestly, QB is fine as it is. My only wish is for either the or to run down the local on weekends. I do support the idea of making the the full time Astoria line with both and going to 96th St. -

The problem with these various University Ave subway ideas is why should we be building anything in the West Bronx when they already have the and while much of the Central and Eastern Bronx is underserved? Even if I supported sending the into the Bronx it would only be to serve a much needed market like 3rd-Webster Aves. Once again, we're completely ignoring Harlem and UWS residents as well, who make the switch @ 96th St from to As an aside, is there any appetite for a peak direction <1> between 168th St and 96th Streets? I know the center track switch are after 145th st, the <1> would just skip 145th and 157th on the local track. One argument is missing many high ridership stops but if you had a ratio of 2 s to 1 <1> then you'd be preserving balance on the line. -

Even better would be adding tail tracks to Utica Ave and simply running the there. Yes, I realize that forces Nostrand riders into a transfer at Franklin, but if it means more service on all 4 services due to the lack of merging then it's worth it. Sometimes less is more. Spending billions to reconfigure junctions and services just because it looks good on the map doesn't always work out. People need both the and the in The Bronx, and the serves it's purpose well (not to mention Harlem will protest the closure of 148th st). The Bronx IRT needs to be left alone. -

As someone who (was) riding the QB Line (and getting on at 65st no less), TONS of people stay on the past Roosevelt. When I moved here I thought I'd be on easy street thinking everyone got off at Roosevelt and I'd be guaranteed and empty train. Boy was I wrong... People want to get to either Broadway or 53rd St, and those getting on between Forest Hills and Roosevelt will stay on a local if it takes them where they want to go. This is why I always am deadset against any local service going through 63rd st. It would be as much of a waste as the if not moreso. -

Among the ideas, this is my favorite. The absolutely needs to be extended up 10th Ave and after that it's crazyness not to have it go across 57th St and do something... LaGuardia, here's me piggybacking off your idea: up 10th Ave, across 57th st, turns up 2nd Ave and takes over SAS to 125th-Lex. run down 63rd St to QB Express (179th St) run down 53rd St to QB Local ( to Parsons/Archer to 179th St) Broadway Local/Astoria Extended under 34th St Manhattan as Crosstown service to Hudson Yards. As an aside, is there any possiblity of adding two more tracks to 42nd st to make the 4 tracks? I always wondered if that was possible.... -

The lack of police presence/ridership is starting to be felt: last night on the way home the pulls into 52nd st and the Flushing-bound side is b.o.m.b.e.d with graff. Like cicra 1982 style. People can scream "broken windows/guiliani lover" but I bet dollars to donuts this plays into what happened at 110st the other day. No cops, No riders, No rules.
