  1. In the perspective of a rider, has bus service in Nassau county improved or got worse since the Veolia takeover?

Without question, it's objectively worse. Many of the buses (newer and older) don't get maintained that well — terrible engine performance/sound, poor heating/air-conditioning, and really dirty interiors. Sometimes, when it gets really hot, you'll see a bus or two with its "trunk" open "to keep the bus cool." Occasionally, you'll see buses arrive quite late or not come at all.

  2. well park ave needs a bus route

If anything, the only section of Park Avenue that would fulfill bus service is Park Avenue South due to its abundant businesses. But Park Avenue north of Grand Central doesn't need it because the people who live and work there don't want it.

    M35-extend to Park Avenue

M103-extend to Battery Park via M9 routing

Extending the M35 to Park Avenue is completely unnecessary. One of the M35's biggest purposes is to provide a feed for passengers to get to and fro Randall's and Ward's Islands. The bus terminal is next to the 125 Street (4)(5)(6) station, where it can get really busy. Relocating the terminal away from a really busy hub would do nothing except kill the route outright.

And the M103 is slow and late enough as it is. Weaving the bus through Tribeca to Battery Park City will make the bus even later.

  3. Well it made sense to eliminate the N22 limited. Rode it once in 2012. Bypassed both Roosevelt Field and Mineola terminal. I don't think re-routing it made it any better...

It was only a matter of time. Those two stops (especially Roosevelt Field) are lifelines on the n22, and skipping them meant much lower ridership than the local. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

We got some revised bus maps and schedules headin' your way! :D

    1. The B32 is featured in dark blue.

    2. The B15 branch (purple) to the Postal Facility has been cut.

    3. The B67 (red) shows its continuous turning through the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The terminal and streets through the revitalized portion of the Yard are featured in the inset.

(There is a mistake on the back of the map. It says the B67 meanders through DUMBO and the BNY seven days a week, when it only serves the area part-time during the weekdays.)

    1. The B32 (purple), revised B15 route (red), and B67 extension (light green) are on the map.

    2. The Q33 (red) displays its revised northbound terminal at 94th Street.

    3. The Q70 LTD (red) has the "LTD" initial beside each symbol along with type on the path of the BQE that reads:

    Q70 LTD

    Makes no stops between

    Roosevelt Av and Broadway and

    Parking Lot 1 in LaGuardia

  5. Question is: are the n45 and n51 actually needed? Because if the main ridership is NCC students then they aren't really needed anymore.

I believe the n45 and n51 really are needed. We have people coming from all over, in, and out of Nassau (including Bellmore, Merrick, and the areas both routes cover heading to and fro NCC and Roosevelt Field), and it's that college where NICE can rack up plenty of revenue. In the current routing, only a part of NCC is covered. The revision allows these passengers to get on and off at more major points around the campus. The more the bus meanders around the campus, the more passengers and the more choices. For people whose lifelines are the n45 and n51, it may be one less transfer for them, too.

  6. Astoria Line is right. This route isn't a good idea at all.

    1. The route is just way too long. You have the bus's terminals at both LIC and the Ridgewood terminal. With all of the weaving the bus will have to go to and fro both terminals, this adds a lot of time for the bus. You can literally spend over an hour on only a portion because of all of the traffic in and out of the bus and the constant weaving.

    2. There are so several areas where the bus can get jammed in not only traffic, but high overcapacity of passengers, too.

    a. Woodhaven Boulevard has extremely heavy traffic, and it's extremely common for cars, trucks, and buses to do nothing except crawl down the street. Don't let the estimated time on Google Maps fool you. You could spend a long time on Woodhaven Boulevard, especially at busy intersections and the area where buses turn onto the Long Island Expressway. On a limited, you can cut the time down, but on a local, you can really be up a creek without a paddle.

    b. I'm not as familiar with Broadway and some others here (especially the portion west of the 74th Street station), but even that street gets heavy with traffic. On the Q53, that bus can literally crawl and get stuck at various intersections due to its size and weaving.

    c. And then there's Hoffman Drive, which can be a literal hellhole. I've been there a lot, and it's not uncommon for buses to get crammed in that small street, extremely full to the point where not all of the passengers can get on, and sometimes stuck because of all the cars and trucks waiting to get onto Woodhaven Boulevard. Schooldays during the PM rush hour is where buses get hit the worst.

Why not just extend Q52 or 53 to Astoria via Broadway

The Q53 is long enough already, and it gets constantly stuck in traffic on both ends. The same goes for the Q52, and it doesn't even go to Jackson Heights. Extend either to Astoria, and you can turn that bus route into one congested pain in the ass.

  7. It won't take much away from the Bx6 since the Bx6 also goes into Manhattan.

Do you think it's possible for the Bx46's north terminal to be revised? Like, instead of Westchester Avenue, maybe the (6) Hunts Point Avenue Station instead?

Here's the picture of reference (the old Barretto shuttle):

    Barretto_Pool_Map_2009-1.jpg

  8.

Utilizing the route a couple times now, I see no hope for the Bx46 as it is...

I never rode that route, and I could tell how poor the Bx46 has performed just by the pictures and videos. These buses just look empty.

If you were in charge of revising the Bx46, how would you do it? For me, I'd make the bus service more frequent to start.

    That's one route [QM16] I gotta try.

I never used the QM16, but I took the Manhattan-bound QM15. It was rather interesting seeing that bus maneuver in the Woodhaven Boulevard traffic onto the freeway.

But one Manhattan-bound from Queens scene never gets old: the Manhattan skyline either at sunset or at night.

  9. Not to double post, but just a random minute thing...why do buses get delivered with a different font of number than the MTA stocks? They come in Helvetica or something, I read that once, but then repaints get a different style. Never got that.

I have no idea why, either. The MTA has done this for a long time (back when the MTA replaced the serif numbered font with the condensed Helvetica typeface in the mid-1990s). Then to make it worse, the condensed Helvetica numbers are often poorly aligned and kerned. Even when I was a young kid, it's something that always annoyed me, because it makes the bus's presentations look very sloppy.

And on a different subject, the Queens Bus Map and schedule have been updated! Three changes with the map:

    1. The (A) past Howard Beach and (S) are back in service.

    2. The (A) shuttle and (H) are no longer on the map.

    3. Part-time, summer-only service for the Q22 and Q35 are added. These two routes enter Jacob Riis Park during the summer only, and there's a small caption underneath the part-time symbols.

  10. Hey there..Can I make a kind request? I would like to please have two bus signs in O5 CNG print..

Furthermore, there's one new big resource for making Luminator signs, although some of the characters are designed a bit differently than what we see in NICE, Bee-Line, the New York City PBLs, and the MTA. You can find it here.

  12. I'll be getting to yours soon, Threxx. Meanwhile, I created a fantasy idea borrowing one of your fantasy routes that you requested me to map out from another thread last year: the Q51 from Forest Hills to Broadway Junction.

Unlike the MTA, current NICE routes use a lowercase letter to indicate the county (or company, for NICE is lowercase). Here, I decided to use the format of the typical NICE routes, using separate keyframes for each piece of information.
