  1. I saw this train on the Hudson Line last night at Yonkers Station. It was picking up some Japanese workers. I should've got a recording.

They wouldn't move those all the way to the Hudson Line. The M8s are strictly testing on the New Haven Line. I don't think they have even been out of Connecticut or New Haven Line Territory.

  2. I wanted to post this last week when it originally occurred, but I wanted to get a video before I made any comments. Who knows when I'll get that chance again.

Around 4:00 am last Tuesday morning at Stratford, I walked under the Main Street overpass to head up to the 3 Track platform when I heard an unfamiliar sound in this neck of the woods. Not an M2, M4 or M6, nor was it a diesel locomotive, and it was definitely not an Acela or P40DC, P42DC, P32AC-DM, HHP-8, AEM-7AC or any Amtrak equipment. It sounded like an M7, and had it not been for the MNRR engineer with whom I was walking, I would have only quessed that it was a train of M8's headed toward New Haven.

I sprinted up the stairs to the platform, but I was able to catch only the last pair of the six-car consist, which had to be cruising east on 2 Track at all of 45 mph or more. And yes, because the M8's are equipped with the same Mitsubishi propulsion system that the M7/A's are equipped with, the sounds are almost indistinguishable. The lights on the head end are bright as all hell, and the consist was shiny, shimmery, and aching for abusive and arrogant commuters to begin their assault.

I know that the M8's have been testing in this area overnight quite often as of late, and if I can catch footage, I'll definitely post it.

That probably was an exhilarating experience! I would've ran up to the platform do fast....I know I would trip on the stairs and bust my a**. I guess I'm that much of a MNRR foamer!

    Thanks:)

  7. I know, just like the LIRR with the M1's? and the M3's. I wonder why the other trains can't run on the New Haven line.

How do the trains work beyond the third rail?

Other trains will not work on the New Haven Line because the NH Line is on the NEC (North East Corridor) which uses catenary wires which are overhead. All of the other electric trains MNRR has (primarily the M7s use third rail power)

In order to operate trains beyond the third rail, Diesels are used for push-pull trains. The electric train cars that use the third rail (M7s) will either not run on the line if there is no third rail or run part of the line if there is third rail and terminate where ever the third rail ends. For example: on the Harlem line, M7s operate only to Southeast (where the third rail ends) In order to continue the line, people must be on one of the Diesel trains that go straight up to Wasaiac

  8. Diversity!!!! The New Haven branch hasn`t seen a new railcar since 1993 and the oldest train running was made in 1972!!!!.LIRR has M3`s,M7`s and C3 bi-levels. thats diversity.

St Louis Car is right. The LIRR doesn't have that many old cars that need replacing. Metro North is doing this because the NH Line NEEDS new cars.

  9. FYI: For anyone who doesn't know what ACSES stands for, it's Advanced Civil Speed Enforcement System.

Now this may have been answered already somewhere else, but since all of the NEC will eventually upgrade to ACSES, is the LIRR planning on converting as well? And do the M-7's already have provisions for ACSES, or will they have to be retrofitted? I imagine that the M-9's will have ACSES installed on them when they are eventually delivered several years from now.

    Won't the M9s just be upgraded M7s?

  10. Greg is correct, the M8's have the same cab signals as the M7, but also are equipped with Amtraks ACSES or whatever the initials are. From the pictures I have seen of the cabs, they are identical to the M7's except for the headlight switch being lowered, the addition to the Amtrak cabs, and the changover switch for AC/DC.

Also, all cars will have to run thru the test period.

Thats cool that you got to see the cab! are those pics online?

  11. Dedicated in terms of how much money this order is making them:p But I believe the Lapa Brazil body facility and the Hornell N.Y facility do other rail cars and other equipment.Maybe what they meant by that is that they may have re-tooled their facility to specifically handle the R160 Order.Isn`t it crazy that Kawasaki is the head of the r160 project!!! which is why Alstom R160s are riding on Kawasaki trucks.Im telling you Kawasaki are running things and not just trains either.

I think you're right because if I owned Alstom I wouldn't spend money on a facility that is eventually gonna stop making R160s once the order is complete. So they must be doing other things there as well.

On a somewhat-related note, does anyone know if ATC cab signalling identical to the M2/4/6's is being used?

They are using cab signaling similar or the same to the M7 I believe but it will also be programed to along Amtrak.
