  1. You want the truth? I didn't finish college and I took both exams. Got a 96 on the C/R and 92 on the T/O and I took the exams on a whim just because I wanted to get out of retail. I did not even know there were study guides to them until well after I took the exams and had no clue what I was walking into when taking them. As for reading comprehension granted my reading levels hit college levels once I got to JHS so apparently that isn't typical. That being said there were many people who scored better than I did and got into transit well before me. Those grades will get you called for both titles btw. The hardest questions for me were what street is the empire state building? What borough are yankee stadium and citifield? I don't really get out much so had little exposure to the landmarks. The rest of the test... well can you read a subway map and be able to tell me the quickest way from point a to point b via transfers? How about some of that reading comprehension everyone talks about. Transit rules are conductors cannot wear shorts but bus operators can. So what if it's hot out it's ok to wear shorts as a conductor right? What about sunglasses? A trick too is look at these questions and think what would a manager look for in an employee. Granted not all questions are just cut and dry easy looking at it that way but for the most part it does help. Some questions I looked at and thought it was either a trick question or a joke. Really the test is pretty easy. You are working yourself up over nothing. Once you are in the promotion exams are another story you will need to study for them. I took the ATD exam as my first promotion exam and I have to say although it wasn't a hard test, you really need to know what the job basically entails or at least what it involves compared to other titles. That takes time and studying. Granted I passed but not nearly as high as an open competitive exam for the sake of comparison. I will say though the last batch of tests were handled by DCAS these new ones are handled by MTA and from what I am seeing so far from the NOE's the new tests are looking a little stricter in their requirements but still for an open competitive exam they do not expect you to know anything about transit and all the questions that ask you about any of that there will be the answer somewhere in the exam itself beforehand (like the rules on shorts). At least that is my honest opinion on a realistic view of the exams. Maybe someone here in transit can give you a better idea what to expect for the exams but that is what I remember from them. As for your first post example my guess is D. I dunno the answer and to be honest I don't remember much on sentence structure but A seems not quite right, B looks like a run on sentence and C has too many things capitalized (who capitalizes the word city anyway?) Thankfully that has nothing to do with the actual exam.
  2. I know someone who is going for station agent. He is HIV positive, it is under control with medication but he claims it is confidential information and therefore thinks he does not need to disclose it to the MTA. I know it isn't a criminal thing but it is something that fits along the lines of what does and does not need to be disclosed to get the job. How does that work?
  3. Won't know till the NOE comes out but I say $63 as a guess. That's what you are likely looking at
  4. Actually starting pay is $20.25/hr for conductor. The next exam will most likely cost $63 to file.
  5. Put it in anyway, unless you are adamant about staying at this position and retiring which is also fine. If you don't need the credits for this position you will when trying to move up or sideways in the future and might as well let them have your schooling on record and up to date.
  6. That is most definitely the current starting salary for conductor so the error is either with you and the letter (maybe you also took the 8094 test and were looking at that letter?) or a clerical error on their end where they switched the salaries for positions or something.
  7. I just read somewhere that after the next class they are not hiring any more conductor's till the next list. Also that they will probably have that open for filing by the end of the year maybe. Dunno how that would work though even if we are good on active conductors for the time being as I have now heard from a couple of sources since they extended this list for another year weren't they anticipating more hiring?
  8. Thanks I didn't have that yet so I wasn't aware of the procedure. I just don't like to see fellow coworkers getting into trouble for stuff like that. Ahh good to know although sounds like something I would wanna know ahead of time before cleaning out my train whether by dispatcher, TSS or my partner. This is the kind of reason I like asking things ahead of time if I think of it. Being there was no TSS at the platform at that time she did the right thing by asking RCC as a last resort but that cannot look too good Is that new or just the same signal exam we took too during schoolcar (just an exam not like the test I hear that the T/O's need to ace) I wonder if I had anyone from here while posting
  9. You are over thinking things. Your computer programming skills or multiple languages or whatever special skills won't make a difference when applying to this job. They look for what is stated on the NOE as far as getting your foot in the door. Once you are in however, they encourage you to move up or around quickly before settling at a position. Those special skills you listed will be factored in when it comes to that. Also the union offers free classes for transit employees so you can expand those skills once here.
  10. This was at a G.O. location, not a terminal but the train was a baseball special. It was probably the last stop before it had to go back to the yard so it could have been worse. I don't have real details on that but speculation by whoever was there said it sounded like she was supposed to leave the train to clear it out so it could go back but she didn't get back on when he took off. If that were the case she should have either pulled the cord when leaving her cab and walking outside (as per schoolcar) or walked through from the inside or at the very least what I see some senior conductors do is leave a crew door open for herself while she is out just so it doesn't pass indication (but really don't suggest relying on that) Maybe when I get a little more time or when I see you in person again remind me if I didn't by then.
  11. Oh one thing to note to whoever was Miss 3 days out... NEVER leave your train and let the operator go off with it unless it's at a terminal and it is going to the yard. Even then make sure ahead of time. I was one of the platform conductors who witnessed someone from the new class the other day who was really new leave the train, then the train took off and first thing is she called RCC and banged herself out stating there are people asking about directions (there were 3 platform conductors that day you should have asked first about that at least since they were there for those questions) at Bowling Green during the midnight tour then she stated her T/O told her to get off the train and left without her and she didn't know what to do (that part I dunno what to say). I hope she didn't get into too much trouble but it was definitely someone from this talkative class.

  13. Did not get that far. They sent me the same paperwork as the first time for the drug test. Does this mean I should go down on the 2nd, take the drug test again and then from there explain things to them? I mean I have not filled out anything at 180 yet that has my pass number and all that for the paperwork for T/O. When I went last time for the drug test I basically did the test for both positions on the same day. Funny, Ms. Shivers was the one who first suggested I go for the C/R position, finish probation on that,then go for the T/O position. At that point I was really considering just waiting out the list and jumping straight into the T/O position outright.
  14. I got the letter to come back down for the medical (same letter to fill out as last time for the drug test so maybe this means my DT expired and just needs to be renewed). So my appointment is Jun 2, however, being that my list # is 244x, they might be up to my number? How do I go about asking to be postponed on the list so I can request to be reinstated later after my probation is finished as a C/R?
  15. Anyone know when the next Traffic Checker exam is going to be? Also the same question for station agent. For some reason I cannot even find a NOE for traffic checker on either MTA.info nor DCAS's site. I don't know how often they give those tests or even if they still give them. Actually asking for a friend of mine who is not on the forums since she wants to apply for those positions when the next exams come out.
  16. Well it is pretty much what was written already in the forums. The first practical consists of checking the cars adjacent to your operating position,double zoning, and cutting out a door properly. They also usually throw in something random and extra to troubleshoot. The second practical consists of routine stops, stopping short of your marker and a station overrun. Also keep in mind G.O.'s and unexpected things happen even during the practical so it can affect us. 12-9's wait for no man.
  17. Calm down children... play nice! You will be swamped with that info soon enough even if we told you details now it would only serve to confuse you anyway. My whole class passed the final practical tomorrow it looks like we start as XX C/R's. I hope they continue the schedule for me like tomorrow is going to be good for me considering.
  18. I was there when the last class were told all T/O's have PM classes and B division. Classes are set as the T.S.S.'s are able. Now for the choosing your shift later on, at the end of schoolcar they give you a wishlist for AM,PM or midnights. Also for your RDO's. It doesn't mean they will honor it. I got the wishlist after the final, I hear they do try to work with you and when calling the crew office my first time yesterday they seemed nice enough to me so here's to hoping lol
  19. Forgot to reply to this last time but although I heard they were posting I did not hear anything beyond that. Did they have to retake the practical before they passed or what happened with that? Yep Taylor's been here longer than I was even alive lol. Very knowledgeable though I had him as my TSS.
  20. Some advice, don't trip over the jumper cable while chasing down your train. Also, it looks scarier than it is. Yeah there will be a large spark when you are on the hot end of the cable (which incidentally is the heavier end be prepared for that) so don't flinch and jump back that could be very dangerous remember there is an entire side of a train just above it made of metal. Seriously safety is first and foremost but at the same time if you let it intimidate you then you increase your chances of messing up. Listen to your instructors advice and don't stare directly at the rail just watch where you aim it and turn to watch your partner. They give protective insulated gloves that go up half way up your arms. You will be fine as long as you follow instructions. Oh and the cable welds against the 3rd rail slightly each time so taking the cable off you will need to give it a little force as you pull (I think they said rock it back and forth first to loosen it) You'll see a video of it right before you take turns doing it.
  21. Haha! I thought we all were gonna fail too. I think maybe the 2 that were pulled aside at the end did fail that first try though. Maybe compared to them whatever we did wasn't that major?
