  1. By the way, Amtrak does not use all of its right-of-way. There's room for 6 tracks in the Bronx, but it has been reduced to 2 tracks. What do you do with the space for 4 more tracks? Work things out, and the subway will come really cheap—possibly cheaper than light rail. Of course, not every place has extra space just to plop a subway on top of. The Bronx just so happens to have this.

Anyway, the reason subways are claimed to be cheaper in the long run is not the immediate monetary cost, but the effect on the surrounding ecosystem. By building lower capacity transportation, you physically cap the growth of a region to a certain level. Imagine replacing even a single East River tunnel between Queens and Manhattan today with a light rail or BRT line. The ridership was definitely not there when some of these lines were built, but had the city or companies operating the transportation went for cheaper options, Queens would not have grown so much. Stunted growth is a residual, ongoing cost that will make the community pay for a long time. That's why compromising on transportation is such a bad idea.

2 More tracks will be restored when the Penn Station access for the New Haven line is restored. They ripped out 2 of the 4 tracks from New Rochelle to Hell Gate Bridge.... Freight would get 1 track.....

  2. Instead of thoughts or opinions, may I ask a question? :)

Is a bar car really needed at MNRR?

Yes to keep the Connecticut Commuters sane after a long day at work. Its also a bit of tradition for some...... The Newer cars will be more of a cafe car then a bar car....

  3. The Multi-level EMU would be the same height of a non muti-level EMU....it would look like a MBTA single level - Multi level train. Why would it be any taller? A mixed train is better because it has both high and low capacities.... Japan makes most of there trains like that , because off peak its expensive to run double Deckers...other agencies like MARC , MBTA and Metro do that aswell for there push - pulls. As you can see form the photo its not much taller then the real train.... same if you look at MBTA or MARC....but EMU's use that design for mixed trains...

  4. I agree! I hope the Arrow IV's are single level MUs, and have A RFW like the SL-Vs do lol, I know the first set of seats in the first car is roped off on the SL-Vs, from what I read the second and third seats still offer a nice view. Not really a fan of the Arrow IIIs, they look nice, they was built by Budd and have a great sounding horn its just the seats on those things, I honestly think that if they had more pleasant seating for tall people like myself, I would be a fan of them!

But last I heard the replacement for the Arrow IIIs are gonna be multilevel, its unknown whether they will be Push Pulls or MU's though, I'm hoping for the latter, as more Push Pull multilevels would be boring.

Well Running Double Deckers is very expensive so only lines that will use them are busy lines. Like the Raritan Valley , NJCL (to a smaller extent) , M&E and NEC.... Running them on the other lines is expensive and NJT knows this so form what i heard a smaller batch of EMU's with be ordered....

Hopefully something like this....with less doors of course , but a closed EMU set not like legos...

  5. Awesome, but is there any plans to make the M8's also run on the LIRR for certain extra services outta Penn or no?

So, I guess it can't take the SLE either...

The MNRR and LIRR use 2 different types of third rail...so no it wouldn't run on the LIRR...
