  1. Next:

Same situation as this one, only it's on the Lexington Avenue Line, with 125th Street to Atlantic Avenue affected on those lines.

This is a long-term change, so I took some liberty with the solutions.

    (3) Extended to 149 St/3 Av to avoid delays at 142 St Junction and provide extra service into Manhattan.

    (4) No trains between 125 St and Atlantic Av.

    (5) Trains run via the (2) line in both directions between 149 St and Nevins St. Trains run local in the Bronx.

    (6) No trains between 125 St and Brooklyn Bridge.

    (A) Trains stop at 155 and 163 St.

    (C) Trains rerouted to 161 St to connect with the (4).

    (D) Trains run local in the Bronx.

    (F) Selected trains run via 53 St to increase service to Lexington Av/53 St.

    NEXT

Astor Place is impassable on the (4)(5)(6). This is a long-term change.

    Reroute: (4)(5)(6), others as needed.

  2. There's not enough tph for the (B) to handle Brighton alone, and the (M) should not be changed for an incident that does not affect it. Besides, the (M) has 480' trains, unlike the (Q).

And no, the (Q) will not run to Botanic Gardens.

  3. I guess you have never seen the (Q) trains when they go to Atlantic Av. Smh. I will explain.

    (Q) trains, (S) in this case, will switch to the required track while entering Prospect Park. Some will wrong rail going into Atlantic Av, some will wrong rail going out. Trains can terminate at Prospect Park to reduce clogging.

When that happens they run every 15 minutes if both tracks are in use. That's nowhere near enough to replace the (B)(Q).

My solution to the Manhattan Bridge problem:

    (B) No trains between 34 St and Brighton Beach.

    (D) Trains run in two sections: 205 St to 34 St and 34 St to Coney Island via Broadway and tunnel.

    (N) No trains between Atlantic Av/Barclays and Astoria-Ditmars.

    (Q) Trains run via the tunnel and Broadway Local at 15 tph.

    (R) Selected northbound trains terminate at Atlantic Av.

    NEXT

The Clark St tube is impassable. In addition, Fulton St (4)(5) is impassable.

    Reroute: (2)(3)(4)(5)

    Duration: 2 years

  4. The Penn station complex has been closed due to a police investigation. Reroute (1)(2)(3)(A)(C)(E).

    (1) No trains between 42 and 14 St.

    (2) Trains run via the (5) between 149 and Nevins St.

    (3) No trains between 96 and Chambers St.

    (A) Trains run via the (D) between 59 and 34 St, then via the (F) to West 4 St.

    (C) No trains between Chambers and 168 St.

Some (E) trains run via 63 St and Broadway Express, proceeding to terminate at 34 St.

Other (E) trains run via 53 St and terminate at Lex Av.

    (M) Cut back to Broad St, replaced with additional R service between Whitehall St and 71 Av.

    NEXT

Bowery (J)(Z) and Canal St (A)(C)(E) are both impassable. This is a long-term service change, so solutions can be creative.

  5. NEXT: The Fulton Street tunnel has collapsed flooding the Fulton Complex. Reroute the 2 3 4 5 A C J Z.

(2)(3) Suspended between Wall St and Chambers St. Selected southbound trains run OOS via South Ferry Loop.

(4)(5) Suspended between Wall St and Brooklyn Bridge.

(J)(Z) Suspended between Broad St and Chambers St.

    (A) Trains run via the (F) between West 4 St and Jay St in both directions.

    (C) No trains between Chambers St and High St.

    (E) Selected trains run express in Manhattan to avoid congestion with A/C/E trains on one track.

    (M) No trains between Chambers St and 71 Av.

(N)(Q) Trains run via the tunnel, as the B'way line is one of only two unaffected lines in Lower Manhattan.

    NEXT

Dekalb Av is impassable. Reroute (B)(D)(N)(Q)(R) trains.

For the purposes of this exercise, assume the Franklin (S) has a track connection to the Fulton Local tracks in both directions and has 600' platforms throughout.

  6. (C) 2 Av to 168 St (6 Av/CPW/UWS Local)

    (E) Euclid Av to Jamaica Ctr (Fulton/8 Av Local/Queens Blvd Express)

    (M) Metro Av to Chambers St/Broad St (Nassau St Local)

    NOTE

    (C) Trains may run 6 Av Express between Broadway Lafayette and 47-50 Sts

    The express tracks are affected.

    ;)

  7. NEXT: design a weekend GO for replacing the switches that the (B) uses south of 59 St.

    I like this puzzle.

    (C) Downtown trains bypass 72 St and run express from 59 St to Canal St.

    (D) Trains run in two sections:

......205 St to World Trade Center, via the (A) between 59 St and WTC.

......West 4 St to Coney Island.

Transfer at West 4 St to continue your trip.

    NEXT

23 St (A) is impassable on the express tracks.

    Reroute: (A)

  8. NEXT: Manhattan bound (E)(F) express track at 65 St is impassible. Rules: don't overload the QBL local tracks, and Manhattan below 42 St must be served with the same number of TPH as usual.

(E)(F)(M)(R) Manhattan-bound trains run express via the local track between Roosevelt Av and Queens Plaza/21 St.

If necessary, selected northbound (M) trains terminate at Queens Plaza.

This will work because trains will not stop in the affected segment.

  9. The year is 1999, the last year of manhattan bridge rehab. Unfortunately, while building it becomes unstable and falls apart. You need a long term solution for this, and this change is meant to last st least 10 years. Oh, and dont throw 400000 TPH in the Montague Tunnel.

    (B) Trains run between the Bronx and Church Av, via Culver.

    (D) Trains run between the Bronx and Kings Hwy, via Culver.

20px-M_Train_%281979-2010%29.svg.png Brooklyn section runs full-time between Pacific St and Coney Island via West End. Transfer at 4 Av/9 St for (B)(D)(F) service to Manhattan.

    (N) via tunnel and local throughout the route. The last stop on some northbound trains is Pacific St. Transfer at 4 Av/9 St for (B)(D)(F) service to Manhattan.

    (Q) Restored and sent via tunnel to Times Sq/42 St at 15tph peak.

20px-Q_Train_%281988-2001%29.svg.png No trains between 34 St-Herald Sq and Brighton Beach. Transfer to the (Q) at 34 St. This train is relabelled (S) during this time to avoid confusion with (Q) trains.

    NEXT

The year is 1987, and 47 St/6 Av is impassable.

    Reroute: (B)(D)(F)(S)(JFK)

    Use this for reference:

  10. Canal St on the 8th Avenue line is impassable. Reroute (A)(C)(E).

    (A) Trains run via the (F) between West 4 St and Jay St. Trains also run local in Manhattan.

    (C) No trains between 168 St and Chambers St.

    (E) No trains between 34 St-Penn Station and WTC.

    (M) No trains between Chambers St and 71 Av. Trains in Queens run as (R) trains between 71 Av and Whitehall St.

    (Q) Some northbound trains terminate at 57 St to avoid delays with the extra (R) service.

    NEXT

    23 St/B'way is impassable. Reroute: (N)(Q)(R)

NOTE: Assume that this scenario occurs when the SAS is built, with an X-over at Grand St with the B/D tracks.

  11. In essence, that means no trains can use 145 St lower level.

    Thus:

    (B) No trains between 145 St and Bronx. Trains run OOS to 168 St to relay.

    (D) No trains between 145 St and 161 St. Trains run OOS to Dyckman St to relay.

    NEXT

    Church Av is impassable.

    Reroute: (B)(Q)

  12. NEXT: All switches west of 36th Street are set in favor of 60th and 63rd Street on the Queens Blvd line.

Reroute the (E), (F), (M), (R), and others as necessary. (That phrase doesn't give you licence to confuse riders.)

    (E) Trains run via the F between Roosevelt Av and West 4 St.

    (M) No trains between Chambers St and 71 Av. Trains already in Queens run as additional R trains between 71 Av and Whitehall St.

    (Q) The last stop on some northbound trains is 57 St.

    (F)(R) Unaffected

2nd Avenue is impassible in all directions. Reroute the (F) and do not go over 30 tph.

    (F) Trains run either via Cranberry St or Crosstown.

    NEXT

All three Queens-bound tracks are impassable at 23 St/Court Sq.

Reroute: (E)(G)(M)(7) (assume that one track cannot handle all G trains)

  13. Due to a fire on board a train, the Times Square - 42nd Street complex has been evacuated. Reroute trains accordingly.

    (1) No trains between 34 St and 96 St.

    (2) No trains between 14 St and 96 St.

    (3) No trains between 14 St and 96 St.

    (7) No trains between Grand Central and Times Sq. Some trains terminate at Queensboro Plaza.

    (N) No trains between 34 St and 57 St. Trains run via the tunnel.

    (Q) No trains between 34 St and Queens.

    (R) No trains between Whitehall St and 57 St.

    (S) Suspended

  14. That kind of chain can't work here, as multiple members can solve one scenario. As there is no "right" answer, that can lead to arguments. The 3 scenario rule is fine.

    -__________-

    Ignoring this...

    Next:

    Time: Midday, Short-Term

    Route: (2)(3)(4)(5)

Scenario: A train is stalled b/w Atlantic Avenue and Nevins Street, and to get passengers off of the train, all track b/w those two stations is closed.

(2)(3) No trains between Wall St and Eastern Pkwy.

    (4) No trains between Boro Hall and Utica Av.

    (5) No trains between Boro Hall and Flatbush Av. The last stop on some southbound trains is Bowling Green.

(N)(Q) via tunnel, provide additional service via Boro Hall station.

    (S) The last stop on some northbound trains is Botanic Garden to provide extra service to the IRT.

  15. N and Q via the tunnel (select N trains terminate at Whitehall) and B and D to 34th Street Herald Square the best i can do

No (D) service in Brooklyn? No alternatives? Halving service along the Brighton Line?

    That's not a good idea.

  16. Okay here's one:

All of Manhattan Exploded. Reroute every train via the (G) line to keep service intact.

Let's try to keep it serious.

    NEXT

The Manhattan Bridge is closed for at least half a year.

    Reroute: (B)(D)(N)(Q), others as needed

Rule: all lines must have the same tph to Manhattan as before.

Remember: this is a longterm change.

  17. There's people who care about high post count? I honestly don't even know what my post count is.

And really, we should just have someone post a scenario, then another person solves it and posts their own if they want to. Turning this thread into a discussion sort of ruined it and I'm not really enjoying this thread any more.

You can always just solve an older scenario if you want to restart the thread again. Some discussion doesn't hurt, although I agree that it was a bit off topic.

  18. Single tracked shuttles run b/w Nostrand Avenue & Hoyt-Schermerhorn Streets.

The (A) can serve Hoyt St if it runs local to there, reverses, wrong-rails to the Lafayette Av spur, switches to the eastbound express track there, and runs express from there to Utica Av.
