In addition to New York, bus ridership is declining in Chicago, L.A. and most U.S. cities. Could the problem with buses lie more with people just not liking them in general, even when they run decently?
Maybe the decrease in gas prices and increase in bike share could have an effect
I'd add the Uber/Lyft effect as well.

There has always been a stigma with the public bus.... It is synonymous with poverty in many people's eyes...
