  1. Back in the days when lines were even longer than they were now, it would help keep runtimes down and allow trains a little extra velocity in areas of the system considered safe.
  2. It affected the speed of the train a bit, but the amount is overly exaggerated. The grade of the track affects train speeds more.
  3. Perhaps you should ask Trainmaster, he's the only one who was operating in those days.
  4. Trains at Columbus Circle arent going anywhere near as fast as those at Woodhaven
  5. I'm going to edit that to 36st - 71Av, as I'm sure you're probably not interested in what happens after an or leaves there (E going straight, F down the hill). Northbound: couple of timers (32, 32) situated 2/3 thru the Northern Blvd cut. After Roosevelt, one after Elmhurst (33, 32). Southbound: a string down the hill into 63rd Dr (28,28,32,40+), then again after Woodhaven (25, 35). A high-speed string after the high speed curve (32,32,32). Veterans +R160 equipment have this down pat, and often one may not even be aware they are going thru timed sections.
  6. Queens-bound 53rd also has a timer, they just clear (barely) on the post because it is exactly at 35 and the train averages exactly 35 in the timed period (enters the block at 31, leaves the block at 39, average 35). You can't see the following signal at the end of the block quite yet, so really you're relying on experience in the area rather than sight that indeed the following signal cleared.
  7. That 42 was out there all night as well...this week a rare RFW is available thru rutgers at nite
  8. No, Rutgers. Remember, this is FASTRACK week for 8Av. Cranberry is 45 at most either direction. Rutgers N/B is a wrap tube, and ignore the timers.
  9. Had me a R32 at 53 in the Rutgers this evening...
  10. Well if it is deemed the the current signal sequence provides sufficient stopping distance, no timers will ever appear there.
  11. A slight bend that obscures vision. And between Christopher St and 14st is the location in question, not the station itself.
  12. Those are there probably to make sure you dont slam into the train in front of you, as you can easily be 45 at that point, even today. Timers extend the braking period to make sure you dont go flying around the curve into red (and then your leader).
  13. BTW, in the IRT pic the trains don't reach their top speed until they've actually enterred the curve as it is slightly uphill until they enter Houston than race downhill (and its still amazing how TA never timed the curve).
  14. I had my R32 today at 46 coming into 42nd a lil after 930p.
  15. There is no speed limit in that area for the express tracks.
  16. I had a R68 at 47 the other day n/b before slowing for timers. The last (and slowest) timer clears at 20, but up to 25 will allow a train to enter a station without tripping. Manhattan bridge (span itself) s/b Bway - varies, there's a couple that clears wrapped (and since its 160's they're around 30 at that point), there's a slow one midspan that only lets u through at 18-20, the rest clear as posted. s/b 6Av - they all clear at 22-23. n/b Bway - varies, there's a slow one on the downgrade that clears only at 18, the rest clear as posted. n/b 6Av - clear as posted or a mile or two below.
  17. If u want information like that, please utilize a pm. on the bridge, it depends on side And direction
  18. I ended up entering Sheepshead Bay at 49 (and a full service brake that I later threw most of it away), the first time I've ever gone past the posted speed limit of 45 for the area, most trains can't even get up that high anymore. This is the train I said if I had it northbound I might have pushed towards 55 going north into Newkirk. But boy can that thing stop, Entered Newkirk southbound at 48 and almost stopped the train short.
  19. I had a R68A that was at 47 right after Neck Road. 5078. @#$% did that thing move (and stop), by far the best train I've ever had (and that includes R160 equipment).
  20. It would be different other than the occasional ending up at 168 because of delays in Queens.
