Can Someone give Me a History lesson on the B Division Car Placement From 1998-2007

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone.

I became a subway fan in October-November 2007, so before that, I only rode lines I needed to get places. And I don't remember much about the rolling stock. So what I would like to know: what was the system like before R143's rolled in? After the R143's rolled in? I would like to know what equipment was on each line from effected by this and what each yard contained. Thanks.

the (B) used to go to 168th st while the (C) went to Bedford Pk Bivd during Rush Hours.

(C): Mostly R32's with 3-4 train sets of R38's or R32/38 mixes

(D): all R68 only twice an R32 was spotted on the (D) for Emergency use

(E) all R32 with a few sets of R46's

Just curious, I know the R33S does not have A/C but the 33ML/WF/36 does. Does the R26, 28, 29 have A/Cs?

The Redbirds that was Rebuilt and had A/C intalled were the R26,28,29,33ML and R36ML/WF, some of The R29's were the 1st to have them in the 1970's before they were Redbirds, The R33WF singles did not have A/C because it was a single car and plus it would be a very heavy for those cars.

In the summer the R33 singles were stored due to the Hotness of the subway car so the (7) was 10 cars during the summer months.

Here's a list of Redbirds that were Rebuilt

The R26/28's Late 1985-1987 Rebuilt by MK

The R29's 1985-1987 Rebulit by MK

The R33 World's fair Singles and the R36World's Fair 1985 by Coney Island

The R33 Mainline Cars (9076-9305) Late 1987-1989 Rebuilt by 207th st yard, (8805-9075) Rebuilt in 1989-1992 by 207th st

The R36 Main Line cars Rebuilt in 1985 by ether CI or 207th,

after the GOH, the R33 singles were the only cars without AC. anyone got a picture or video of a (;) using the rebuilt R38s? i saw R32s on the (:D, but never R38s. the (2) and (5) used R62As VERY rarely as well during the 90s.

here is the assignment from 2001-2007:

(A): R44s, R38s, and R32s all the way

(B): R68As until July 22, 2001, when it shared the Concourse R68s with the (D) during the Manhattan Bridge shutdown. when the bridge reopened, it took the R40/40M/42s from the <Q>, but still kept 1 or 2 sets of R68/68As. During the first half of 2007, it ran 2-3 sets of R32s and in the second half, stopped using R42s as they were retired from service.

(C): R32s and R38s all the way

(D): R68s all the way

(E): R32s with occasional R46s (all R46s after September 11th)

(F): R46s with occasional R32s

(G): six R46s until December 16, 2001, when they was cut to four. R32s and R42s were used on that line during G.O.s that extended the (G) to Coney Island.

(J): R40Ms until around 2002-2003, then it was all R42s.

(L): R40/40M/42s until December 2001, when the R143s debuted. in 2002-2003, all R40/40Ms were transferred to Coney Island. the (L) continued to use the R42s until the R160As debuted in July 2007.

(M): R40M/42s (with R40s running after 9/11). all R40Ms were removed in 2002 and R143s went on the (M) shuttle that same year.

(N): mostly R68/68As with some R40s and R32s until September 2002, when Coney Island was closed for rehab. at that time, it was almost always R40/40M/42s. in February 2004, the Manhattan Bridge reopened, it returned to mostly R68/68As. R32s would return to the (N) the following year. they would leave the (N) in early 2007 when the R160Bs debuted.

(Q): R68s (all R32s during September 11th emergency service) until february 2004, when it became almost entirely R68As. R32s occasionally appeared on the (Q) during the last half of 2004 and early 2005. R40/40M/42s were used during Christmas holiday or weekend construction.

<Q>: R40s all the way. R40M/42s arrived in 2002-2003 and some R68/68As were used after 9/11

(R): R46s with occasional R32s

(V): R46s (R38s and R32s used after Chambers Street fire)

(W): R68As entirely until September 2002, when it took some R40/40M/42s from the (N) during the Coney Island reconstruction project. it became entirely R40s in February 2004 and R68/68As came back in 2007.

(Z): R40Ms until around 2002-2003, then it was all R42s until the R160As debuted in fall 2007.

I will not mention the IRT here since this is the BMT/IND forum.

.

I hade ridden an R38 on the (B) 3 times in 1996 and 1997 and in early 1998, There is 1 photot with an R38 assigned to (B) at the 207th st shops, But it was Rare to see an R38 (B), Rerember the B Divison was short on cars after the R30 Retirement from 1993-2001 the B Divsion was short on cars, in 2004 after the manhattan Brigde constuction the B divison did not have a car shortage, and this is a Fact the R143's replaced the R30's but 7 years later, The R30's were supoosed to be retiered in 2001-2002 with the R26.28's and r29's but the R30's were Rebuilt but the TA wasted money Overhauling them and after 4 years they were retierd, And Also the did not have A/C so that's another reason why.

If a Line need an extra subway car they would yank one from the closet yard, Here's an example, The (B)'s terminal is 168th st, the 207th st yard is right there so if the (B) is short of a trainset for Rush Hour 207th st would bring out an R38 and assign that Trainset of r38's to the (B), Also on a sunday Night I was at 42nd st in 1997 and I was on my way home from the bronx and waiting for the (E) train and all of a sudden an R68A (A) train came out of nowhere and trust me anybody that don't beleive me on that one that's alright because it is unbelevable to see an R68A on the (A) but I was 7 back then and I knew what subway car that was, and I looked at the numbers and It came from the Back storage area at 168th st from the (B).

I saw a picture of it in 2004 but The site is now discontuned .

I remember that picture quite well in fact it's floating on nycsubway.org. Like I said before, they were shooting movie (forgot what) for the B and required R38s on that line. Therefore, some R68As went to the A.
