Harry Posted July 19, 2009 Share #1 Posted July 19, 2009 Wait till you get home to eat that drive-thru. A new study shows a staggering 80% of all car accidents and 65% of near misses are caused by distracted drivers more focused on their burgers than the road. "Distractions like eating can become a problem for drivers who can't react quickly to a sharp curve," according to a study by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. In addition to burgers, the study has ranked the worst foods to eat behind the wheel based on a survey of drivers. Coffee is the worst, bringing new meaning to the adage "don't drink and drive." "Even with a travel lid, hot coffee can find its way out of the opening when you hit a bump," the study said. The study puts the other culprits in this order: soup, tacos, chili dogs, hamburgers, ribs and wings, fried chicken, jelly doughnuts, soda and chocolate. On-the-go New Yorkers contend you can drive and eat, and they won't stop multitasking. "When I'm at a light, I take a bite," said Lisa Perez, 29, of Fort Lee, N.J. Dee Kesney, 24, of East New York, Brooklyn, acknowledged that biting into a hamburger while driving can pose a challenge. "With the burger, the pickle might fall out and you might reach for that pickle," he said. In a separate study of 1,000 drivers, ExxonMobil Corp. discovered more than 70% of drivers eat while driving - and 83% drink beverages. Urbanfortitude Posted July 19, 2009 Share #5 Posted July 19, 2009 This is one of those things if you're gonna do it know how to do it. I've eaten while driving before. I can take a sip out of my soda without it affecting how i drive. If the pickle falls off my burger (as if i'd eat a burger while driving) onto the car floor its goin in the trash. But yah don't be all like foot on the gas pedal and BOTH hands have food and drink in them. People do this while driving long distances. As for those hot drinks...if the car is moving whether im driving or not...the drink is not in my hands. It's in the cup holder. I HATE having hot drinks splash my face or accidentally forced down my throat when im not so ready for it.

As a driver since age 21(i got my first car then a '84 Olds Cutlass)and Licensed since age 17, i take my driving very serious. I admit i may have a quick drink myself sometimes such as coffee, juice or soda but i never eat a full meal ever. I also hardly never talked on my cell either(couple of times in emgerncies)and I usually pull off the road if its important call. Ditto for eating a 'full meal' as well. Accidents in America has been lowered alot, but if these idiot drivers paid more attention to the road it could be even be much less.

There's never anything I have to say to someone that I'd have to say while i'm moving the car. If it's an emergency I'm good at pulling over. I don't eat a full meal while I'm driving either. its usually a bite of something to keep my stomach in check till i get somewhere i can eat a full meal myself. But the soda drinking is a different story. That's something I can take a quick sip of while I'm moving and back to business. I don't start swerving around on the road when one hand comes off the wheel. Most of anything that happens in american accident wise is cause some idiot wasn't paying attention or using common sense. Or do I need to point out Ms. Ditzy and the sewer hole again... >.>;;

I trust that your not an idiot and you can use your best judgment to determine what is safe or not. The problem is not eating while driving, it's stupid people who eat while driving. Myrtle Local Posted July 20, 2009 Share #10 Posted July 20, 2009 Basically reckless people with poor judgment. And unfortunately that's about more than half of who's on the road in this city! SubwayGuy Posted July 20, 2009 Share #13 Posted July 20, 2009 I think it boils down to common sense and "know your limit." I'm not going to lie...at different points in my life I've done ALL those things and I consider myself an extremely safe and courteous driver. Never been in an accident or gotten a ticket for a moving violation of any kind. The reality is most people aren't that good of drivers and so they shouldn't be doing that stuff at all. They shouldn't even be tapping their finger on the steering wheel as they hold it with both hands, or listening to the radio as they drive. Also there is a when to do it if you are capable, and that is not when there is a lot of traffic. Also the foods you eat it's important..nothing too messy or liquidy or hot, and in general it's not good to do, so only as necessary. That's the way I see it but the sad reality is most people don't know or acknowledge their limitations or can't control themselves from doing it all the time and then something happens

Ditto for myself no accidents to date(thankfully) but one small stain on my almost spotless driving. I did had '1' speeding ticket as a young 22 year old 'late for class while driving upstate when i was living in Brooklyn. My bad. Still i cant tell how many times i seen idiot drivers who do everything from talking on the cellphone to putting make up on and even turn their radio/CD/MP3 player on a busy street. Again as i come clean, if I am on a highway at 'full safe speed' and car on cruise control on a long trip, I do admit to change the radio/cd player alot. However if i am on a busy street in NYC or elsewhere 100% of my attention is on driving itself. And not trying to brag that is a big reason i never been in accident so far thankfully.
RokuSix Posted July 20, 2009 Share #15 Posted July 20, 2009 I think food is less of a distraction than text messaging. At least you don't have to read and pay attention to the food. However, there are some limits. It's one thing to munch on a bag of fries, but it's another to enjoy a steak dinner in a styrofoam container. I can't imagine how anyone can eat soup while driving. ^ Yeah, do you just drink it, or something? You can't possibly use a spoon while driving. Messino Posted July 20, 2009 Share #16 Posted July 20, 2009 :pyou people are light weights, I drive, drink soda, talk on the cell phone, cut steak, put butter on my baked potato and mix up the mac and cheese all at the same time while driving on NYC streets and I only ran over 2 people during the past 20 years. Once I become T/O i plan on doing it all the time during my trips all the while taking a swig of booze

B) B) I did it a few days ago eating a turkey sandwich, while drinking a can of soda. I had to I tells ya. I had to take my car from Dyre to E180st, cause my job ended at Dyre, and I didn't drive to E 180 at the beginning like I should have. Flying down Boston Rd, mayo making cheese and turkey slip, got mayo on my crotch, driving and putting sandwich back together. Great combo for accident to happen. but then again I was a professional driver, so I can multi-task....... As for the babies and old ladies, well close down on granny as she lived her life anyways. The babies you can close down on too, as they seem to be able to take a licking, and keep on ticking these days........
