MTA to run one test train with security cameras; Every train by the end of 2009.

What is a camera going to do against gun violence? Is it going to leap out of its little stand up in the corner, tackle the perp, and then take it to a nearby precent? Because, golly gee that would make these new cameras just awesome.

I got another great idea, lets have full metal detectors and friskers along with one of those guys the FBI employs who can tell whether or not someone is a criminal just by facial twiches at every station that way NYC truely has a 100% safe transit system.

lol...funny but it would most likely slow down the whole system...from a customers perspective. the truth is the subway will never be 100% safe. this is not including theats from trains electricity and falling, im talking about people. anyone can just bring whatever down there and sorry if i make this kinda harsh but noone would know who is carrying what because its not like the airport where EVERYONE is searched with metal detectors...you would know when its 2 late. 75 footers are the safest subway cars...know why? because the doors at the end of each car do not open...leaving the train locked if someone thought they can be bad and escape...think of the french connection. I dont wanna say just cause there wasnt any attacks since 9/11 that everything is safe...but you never know.

The one good out of cameras on the trains would be to find out which punks are scratching up the train interiors and then tracking that person down and hopefully get that person to pay for damaging property.

Otherwise, to the rest of everyone elses' comments, the cameras are obviously no substitutes for actual cops on the trains.

How the hell are they useless? If someone kills a guy in the subway car with no one around, we would have his face on tape. Then catching him would be a lot easier. And if people know they are being recorded, that may deter them from doing the crime in the first place.

Here we go again, the MTA is draining a massive puddle of money on useless security cameras. What next? Automatic turrets?

Maybe if they were tied into the cameras...

What's that he pulled out a knife? Pop pop! There, fully loaded shooting security camera just saved the innocent would-be-victim's life :(

Please understand that the current annual homicide rate is at minimal especially when compared to that of the 90s. The last time I remember that someone took a bullet in a train was in an R40 W train a couple of years back. Still, those cases are rare. This also means more mousetraps for the railfanning community.

Especially vandalism like scrachitti and will hopefully save the MTA money in not having to replace the scratched up pannels.

It'll be a massive problem then if those guys break the security cameras first then vandalize the panels.

Tell that to a victim's family member. Having the killer's face on tape is a great contribution for him to serve justice. Also, what about robberies and rape cases? Just recently there was a story where a guy raped a woman in a subway station. If he did that in a subway car, we'd have his face and build on tape, instead of the woman's descriptions. Instead of police and investigators trying to guess what happened, they could see exactly what happened. I hope this plan goes through.
