While your whole post was on the money, these statements stood out to me. Wasn't there some initiative in recent years where college students were given bikes as part of their tuition or something? I can very much see Mayor Bloomberg pushing for the same program, if he hasn't done so already, as well as offering bikes to those condo buyers who move into NYC without an automobile. Watch for bike racks to start popping up left and right.

That would be nice to see, and you're right. If that comes into effect, bike racks will be the new "eyesores". As for the biking programme, I haven't heard much about it. But according to your predictions and the Bloombergian concept of retaking the streets with bike lanes, you may see bike racks on city buses. Heck, in a year or so, the MTA will install bike racks on buses wholesale. This has been done in other cities, not here yet. At least, wholesale.

Bloomberg for another set of years? Maybe we need a slight change.

What would be nice is if there was a way to collect fares at the back of the bus especially on the artics sort of like those turnstiles where the arms flips up to let you in.

The problem is people still refuses to get off at the back and still goes out the front and once in a while you will have a fare beater enter from the back of the bus when the doors haven't closed up yet.

This is place every bus should have a camera for: the rear of the bus facing the rear door to see if there are farebeaters entering the bus.

Amazing that what's old is new again. The conept of collecting fares towards the rear of the vehicle, was something first thought of early in the 20th century with the Peter Witt trolley cars. While successful, this was done in by the fact that it required someone to monitor that people paid their fares and trolley companies did not want to have motormen and conductors on cars.

 

For buses, this would mean finding a fail safe way of collecting fares in the rear without requiring a person to be there or the B/O to have to split his attention between the road and what's going on behind him.

Lines like the M14, M34 and M42 will certainly benefit from SBS (if the system is rectified). Sometimes the crowds on those lines are unbearable. At times, the B/O will let passengers in for a free ride at Union because there are so many people boarding.

Of course, SBS would certainly be better than free bus rides. It makes sense on all grounds, from plain old economics to logical reasoning.

Yeah, SBS will work on those lines, as well as SBS has the capability of crowd control instead of having 'free busses' which increases crowds.

SBS doesn't have "crowd control" IINM. There's no strict regulation on how many people could board a bus at a given time, but logic tells us when people should stop boarding an already filled bus. Same thing with free buses.

 

But first of all, if crosstown lines are to become SBS lines, they must have dedicated lanes. The NYCDOT, regardless, should consider putting a bus only lane down 14th Street. At least from 6th Avenue to Avenue A. This helps out more than just offering free bus service.

 

Sides, free buses doesn't speed up commutes, do they?
