trainfan22 Posted November 20, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 20, 2007 what is the point of the r143 they only bought them for the L line and it wasnt even enough cars because of overcrowding and they had to buy 3 sets of r160 coundt they left the L line with the r42 it had and never orded the r143 and just made the whole eastern divison with r160s
Pablo M 201 Posted November 21, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 21, 2007 When the MTA ordered the R143s, they didn't see the demand for alot more service coming, so basically the order was underestimated. Now, with the R160s to supplement the R42s replaced, those are in. Now, the other plan the MTA wants to do with the R160s on the is that the MTA wants to add 8 more trains during peak hours. trainfan22 Posted November 21, 2007 Author Share #3 Posted November 21, 2007 i know but maybe they could have just made an r143 option order and bought r143 for the jmz and L line and scraped the r42
Eastman346 Posted November 21, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 21, 2007 They could have been the first new technology cars testing in revenue service and the manufacturer just updated the design to the R160. just a guess I dont know.
trainfan22 Posted November 21, 2007 Author Share #5 Posted November 21, 2007 I dont think that it would be that bad if the mta kept the r42 on the line for five more years the r143 seems like the most pointless subway car order ever made they cound have put cbtc and opto on the r160 the mta didnt even get cbtc running yet anyway
Pelham Bay Dave Posted November 21, 2007 Share #6 Posted November 21, 2007 The point of the R 143's was to be only used for the L Line since those cars were needed as part or the ATO/CBTC/OPTO Project. However the fact they didn't order enough trains slowed down the Project. The L Line is a test line for the future. Whatever works on the L Line will expand to other lines. They got 5 sets of R 160's on the L Line and once they get them on line with CBTC will see the finished product including ATO. When the TWU sells us out on OPTO the L Line will be 100% OPTO at ALL TIMES.
Tracknut Posted November 21, 2007 Share #7 Posted November 21, 2007 Maybe the MTA learned a bunch by putting the R143's in revenue.
R32 3348 Posted November 21, 2007 Share #8 Posted November 21, 2007 It was not a pointless order. The MTA was suffering from a car shortage in the B division when the R143 were delivered. The R143 order didn't retire any cars, but moved them to other yards where they were needed. Not to mention that without the R143, the R160 would be a mroe expensive order and it would take longer to get the bugs and glitches out of the programming, from lack of experience. trainfan22 Posted November 21, 2007 Author Share #9 Posted November 21, 2007 they would have had experience from the r110 and the r142 so they would have known how to fix the bugs on the r160
error46146 Posted November 21, 2007 Share #10 Posted November 21, 2007 the R110 and R142 is IRT. The L line is BMT.
R1Toasty Posted November 21, 2007 Share #11 Posted November 21, 2007 the R110 and R142 is IRT. The L line is BMT. There was a R110 for the IND/BMT too.
trainfan22 Posted November 21, 2007 Author Share #12 Posted November 21, 2007 There are two versions of the R110. The R110a is for the IRT and the R110b is for the BMT/IND.
Eastman346 Posted November 21, 2007 Share #13 Posted November 21, 2007 Well we really will never know if it was pointless or not unless the person in charge says it was. if it was then we all paid for it. if not then we were blessed with beautiful new cars.
