JFK 7212 Posted March 28, 2010 Share #26 Posted March 28, 2010 DD50's are ok but I'll take a Cummins powered bus anyday. If it has a Voith transmission, even better!
LRG Posted March 28, 2010 Share #27 Posted March 28, 2010 Detroit Diesel sounds better. They sing sweet music under power. The Cummins may be powerful but don't sounds nearly as good. I remember riding the 600 Bee-Line Orions and I was like WTF, expecting to hear Detroit Diesel 50 series. I love Detroit. I remember when the Orion 5 CNGs out at Jackie Gleason had Cummins several years back but now they have Detroit...FTW!
w8Hou Posted March 28, 2010 Share #28 Posted March 28, 2010 DD Series 50 is a junk engine. 6V92 engine FTW.

Gramps Posted March 28, 2010 Share #31 Posted March 28, 2010 IMO, The ISL's are weak. They sound too plain to me!! Doen't the MTA pick their engines and transmissions based upon performance and longevity rather than sound ?
Bill from Maspeth Posted March 28, 2010 Share #32 Posted March 28, 2010 Doen't the MTA pick their engines and transmissions based upon performance and longevity rather than sound ? That's a buff talking rather than a transit professional.

Eric B Posted March 29, 2010 Share #34 Posted March 29, 2010 I would love to see a hybrid air/water engine in two-cycle; so it would sound just like the diesel 2-strokes, yet be emission free. http://www.howstuffworks.com/fuel-efficiency/vehicles/air-car.htm http://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-efficiency/alternative-fuels/salt-water-fuel1.htm

East New York Posted July 11, 2010 Share #42 Posted July 11, 2010 Detroit Diesels Series 92 hands down. Don't know why they discontinued this workhorse in transit applications. Was a great motor that got good mileage before overhauls. Detroit Diesel, which is a division of Daimler discontinued their line of engines for buses so there would be no competition with Cummins, as they are the exclusive provider for all Orion hybrids. Joel Up Front Posted July 11, 2010 Share #44 Posted July 11, 2010 Out of the 9 months I have been riding the bus around LI, I have NEVER seen or been on 1636. Spectacular and JohnQPine have clips of them on it (and John found one running the N35 heading to Baldwin Harbor, one of my favorite routes) on their YouTube channels. I have found 1492, 1591 (I remember this bus because the back door never closed right and one day I found this on the N16 early February - another MTA employee was on the bus and the B/O complained about the brake, and the first time I was on it the B/O asked for a passenger to pull them closed EVERY time someone exited through the back door), and 1776... But never that John Deere engined one. I'll see what happens come September.
