SpikeMauler Posted June 5, 2011 Share #76 Posted June 5, 2011 Class is going well, Big tings a gwan. We're learning how to use the rail slotter / guiding panels, also cutting / drilling rails. I can tell that this is a job that I'm going to love. Met a lot of cool people, including some senior guys. Even chopped it up with a Capital dude that was working on the 1 Train / Van Cortlandt putting panels in. Lotta good people in track work, funny ones too. Glad they're showing you how to use some of the power tools and teaching you about panels. When I was in track school(93)all they did was hand me a ballast fork and told me to dig for a month. Seems like the teaching has gotten a lot better over the years. Sounds like you're gonna enjoy doing track work. I did, and still do. It's a great job with lots of opportunities if you choose to advance. Good luck, Spike

SpikeMauler Posted June 5, 2011 Share #78 Posted June 5, 2011 Did you get your CDL? Yeah, I got mine years ago. It came in handy some years back. I was able to pick a location(which I wouldn't have got without it) close to my house for a few years thanks to the CDL. Really haven't had a need for it as of late since I don't want to drive or specialist operate. I can pick pretty much anywhere I want with my seniority. But a CDL for a new guy is a great advantage. Most guys don't have it(CDL)and it will give you an opportunity to pick tours, rdo's and locations you normally wouldn't be able to pick(with your seniority). wnb85 Posted July 18, 2011 Share #81 Posted July 18, 2011 I got my letter last week and I'm going in Wed morning July 20th. From what I understand is that all I'm gonna do is the drug test then go home. Anyone remember how long it takes them to give u the results and move to the next step? My list number is in the upper 920s.
Locomotion69 Posted July 19, 2011 Share #82 Posted July 19, 2011 They still haven't cracked the #1,000 list mark? Being such a short list(#7119) you have to get a 94.00+ to have a shot. But looking over the scores/spreads of the list, over half of the list got an 85.00+ Brighton Local from this forum got an 87.50--#4027. Expect the next track worker exam to have almost double the amount of eligibles, since unemployment is higher these days then back in the spring of 2006. Keep in mind that the unemployed and people on welfare have the exam fees waived.

wnb85 Posted July 20, 2011 Share #92 Posted July 20, 2011 I just came back from pre-employment. Got turned around because I put down a misdemeanor from 2005 but did not have any court documents. Now I gotta go to court and get the paper (which is pointless to me if they are gonna check it and find out anyway) and call them back. I didn't even get to do the drug test but i guess it wasn't a complete waste of time. At least they gave me the 20 page packet to fill out and bring back (with all the same info I just gave them today). Has anyone else been turned around and how long did it take to get another appointment? I'm disappointed but all this runnin around will be worth it if I get hired. I'm goin down to center street to get the court disposition papers then I'm gonna call the number they gave me right away to tell them I have it. Hopefully I don't miss out on the next class. I just wish I coulda got the drug test out of the way but it is what it is. I had all my work history in order. My hand almost fell off from writing all the jobs and periods of unemployment for the last 10 years. I filled up the extra sheet of work history and still had 1 more job to put on another sheet. Do u know if they actually contact employers for reference or do they just check records to verify the dates you put down?
Locomotion69 Posted July 21, 2011 Share #95 Posted July 21, 2011 Just be honest with what you put down on the 21 page booklet, you do have to explain if you were unemployed for 4 or more months how you supported yourself during that time. Always assume that they will contact your former employers to verify what you put down. This isn't a resume type of situation where you go in wearing a suit and tie and have to impress the person interviewing you. Even if you never worked a day in your life they still have to hire you. For the title of T/O you do need verifiable work experience, but for most other titles you don't. For the record when does list 5016 expire? 03/2012? thanks and good luck. SpikeMauler Posted August 4, 2011 Share #100 Posted August 4, 2011 i just started the process for track worker position,i was wondering after school ends what is a typical workweek like for newbies,is it always nights and weekends?are your days off together and what ones would they be?also how many years does it take to become a track inspector,it seems like they have better shifts, thank you Usually it's nights for newbies. You can get lucky and pick a day job(8am-4pm)out of school but eventually you'll end up nights(10pm-6am). Days off in maintenance are Fri/Sat, Sun/Mon, and a rare Sat/Sun. Days off in Capital are midweek Mon/Tue etc.. Track Inspector usually have the same tour(shift) and rdo's(days off) as regular Trackmen. You can become a Track Inspector fairly quickly. Probably within a couple years or sooner.
