rmcconnell Posted August 17, 2009 Share #15 Posted August 17, 2009 One of my favorites is the entrance to 190th Street at Margaret Corbin Circle. It's not in very good condition though. Modern station entrances that I like include Jackson Heights/Roosevelt Avenue/74th Street/Broadway (or whatever other names the station may have), Gun Hill Road , South Ferry and Bowling Green. The new enclosure at Court Square/45th Road, from the architectural drawings, looks nice as well. I also like the renovated headhouse at 72nd Street . MAA89 Posted August 18, 2009 Share #18 Posted August 18, 2009 These would be my picks for nicest entrances to the subway: 1) Chambers Street 2) Stillwell Avenue-Coney Island 3) Astor Place 4) South Ferry 5) Sutter Avenue 6) Livonia Avenue 7) Bowling Green 8) Avenue H 9) 72d Street 10) Lexington Avenue 11) Roosevelt Island 12) 57th Street 13) Times Square 14) Grand Central 15) Union Square And One Honorable Mention: Mosholu Parkway Agree with you on most, except the ones I haven't been to (Stilwell, Livonia, Avenue H and Mosholu). I like South Ferry, Roosevelt Island and Union Square best. I also like the PATH station entrances: it feels funny to be essentially walking into a hole in the wall of a building and climbing down a maze of stairs and ending up on a rail platform; the system as a whole is rather well hidden. MTR Admiralty Posted August 19, 2009 Share #19 Posted August 19, 2009 I'm not sure if you guys are necessarily referring to the actual entrance itself or the station as a whole, but I'll drop in my twopence on subway station entrance architecture. To me, the design of the subway station entrance facade is important to the surroundings like the pairing of a meal and wine. I'm not too certain about the main entrance of the Coney Island station, while the station itself is modern (even futuristic), I believe that the entrance should reflect the style of the station. While there should be contrast, meaning that historical elements should be preserved, a better design should evoke a smoother transition from the historical period of Coney Island to the futuristic design of the station itself. The new South Ferry station is of course remarkable. It is aesthetically pleasing and opening to the average Joe Shmo. While the nearby ferry terminal is modern, I do hope though, that it would blend in with the surroundings a bit better (such as the entrance by the park). The 72nd Street station on the Broadway line is certainly fantastic. It preserves the historical design as well as blending the design in with the surroundings. The station entrance at Citicorp at 53rd-Lex is marvelous. Though there is nothng much to look at, consider the surroundings and the placement of the station entrance. The structure is highly visible and well marked. For me, the elements that denotate a good subway station are these: -Visibility -Ability to handle crowds -Ease of use -Better circulation -Directness -Ability to blend with surroundings What good is an entrance that makes you enter a block long passageway to the train you are actually looking for? What good is an entrance that is obscure from view?
