Pedestrian fatally hit by train in Huntington

A pedestrian crossing against the signal was struck and killed yesterday (November 26, 2007) in an apparent suicide by a westbound Long Island Rail Road train at the Lake Road crossing in Huntington Monday, said railroad officials and Metropolitan Transportation Authority police.

The man, James C. Dooley, 54, of Greenlawn, was struck by the 11:37 a.m. train from Port Jefferson to Hicksville. The accident occurred at about 12:25 p.m. Service in both directions was fully restored on that section of the Port Jefferson branch shortly after 4 p.m., railroad officials said.

Lake Road is the second grade-level crossing east of Huntington and the crossing gates were down at the time of the accident, officials said. Metropolitan Transportation Authority police are investigating.
