MAXINE MAGADALENO nearly passed out from exhaustion after working for three straight days in an overheated Brooklyn basement.

 

But, no, she wasn't toiling in an illegal sweatshop.

 

Magadaleno is one of hundreds of volunteers happily pulling all-nighters in a race against time to make thousands of elaborate costumes and floats for Monday's massive West Indian Carnival Festival.

 

"It's crunch time. We have to stay all night," said Magadaleno, 23, her eyes red from overwork and her hands sore from gluing hundreds of sequins onto dozens of pink tops.
