Can I pick up a new map for free at the transit store at GCT? What about the little metro card sized folding maps?

It depends, if the map is just made of paper then you can get one for free. I believe laminated ones do have a price so check that out. I could be wrong about that. The little folding maps I believe are free too.

Those folding maps are hard to find, so good luck finding one. As for the subway and bus maps at GCT, don't they charge you for them? That makes absolutely no sense at all. Look for all the maps and schedules you want at 3 Stone Street.

I think the New York Convention and Visitors Bureau also carries The Map and possibly borough bus maps.

 

If it's The Map, it should be free at Grand Central Terminal or Pennsylvania Station, unless it's Hagstrom's Subway Map (I think the current edition is $4.95).

Ask the station attendant, or go to 3 Stone Street in Lower Manhattan, all the timetables, bus maps, and subway maps you could want, plus a few extra thingies.

Its near the Chipotle restaurant, its a revolving door you go thru and it says MTA Customer Service center and its all on a big rack.
