Question about the R68

On some R68's at the front end, underneath the letter designation, there appears to be another slot for some sort of display.

 

Compare this photo (notice under the sign)...

 

...with this one (no secondary display).

 

Any idea what those displays were for?

It's not a display, its just empty space.

You're right as it does seem as if there's extra space, but I think that's just the way the rollsigns were installed.

 

Too bad the car numbers aren't seen, because the two different fleets (R68 and R68A) have different specs, both mechanically and aesthetically.

I don't think it's just a distinction between R68 and R68A; I've noticed the extra space (and lack thereof) on various trains which utilize the same fleet.

It may have been intended for a run number display like the R110B and buses have but there is nothing there. No empty sign, nothing.

Not a problem, I did see a drawing of the R68/As (I can't tell the difference) and it should this, but they were never installed.
