Expect these to wear out in a decade and retire in two decades just like every Shinkansen fleet except the 0 series.

I believe the Shinkansen fleet retires because of a constant surplus in spending cash which leads to periodic train switches and upgrades.

The M8s will last longer than that and you know it. So don't go hating on new technology trains as the Cosmopolitans in my opinion, are the worst of all MNRR fleets.

I don't mind the change in design when it comes to the headlight but overall the design looks okay and it looks promising, let's wait for the testing results and revenue service runs and then we can really if it's worth the money spent.I will miss the Cosmopolitans and like they say,out with the old and in with the new.I don't always agree with that saying because you look at the remaining small fleet of MNRR M1A's and they are still with us,too bad LIRR had to say sayonara to their M1's

The M8's exterior werent designed by Kawasaki. it was Cesar Vergara. Hes also responsable for the exteriors of the P42s, PL42s, Alp46s. Comet Vs, and also was part of the team who designed Sweden's X2000. He aslo had a stint with NJT and updated NJTs livery with the fading 3 color stripe on their new equipment. Im a fan of his work but personally, that M8 front gotta go!!

For MU that have been in service non stop since who knows when (before alll most all of us on here were born), through the hell years of railroads, over 2 voltages and line frequency of AC, plus 3rd rail DC, the cosmos are in remarkable shape, and have been the unglamorous workhorse alongside the FL9's, through blizzards, wars, how many presidents... They got the job done & still do. Will be sad when they go, i just hope the M8 is a worthy replacement in real world day to day operation.

I wouldn`t go as far as aying the cosmos are the worst, they are actually well built trains. We are talking about trains here that was designed and co-built by the legendary Budd company.these cars stand the test of time.

Didn't Japan sell off their original Shinkansens to another country? I thought I heard about that somewhere.

Your right Metsfan. The cosmos have been doing this for over 30 years. The M8s though are a much heavier piece of equipment and requires more power. As we speak,metro-north are working around the clock to update the electrical distribution system to the cantenary, once it was theorized that the M8`s had the potential to blow out substations due to its heavy power consumption similar to what the M7`s were doing.

I know (NJT) had to do some major backend work to switch the :me: from DC to AC, not just more juice for the new equipment, but AC, and longer trains too.

I hope you're aware that the first batch of these cars aren't going to replace anything. They will be used to add seat capacity, as unlike LIRR, some NH trains run with only 6 or 8 cars during peak periods. These M8's are very complicated, not only do we have the 12kv60hz and 25kv60hz catenary, we also have a hybrid third rail shoe that is supposed to be able to handle both MNCRR and LIRR third rail. Had it not been for the weight issue, they could've added a 12kv25hz transformer onto them in order to run to PSNY via catenary as well as run to Secaucus.
