Trainspotter Posted December 12, 2007 Share #1 Posted December 12, 2007 Muslim hero breaks up train beating [float=right] Maria Parsheva and boyfriend Walter Adler were assaulted on Q train after they wished their attackers Happy Chanukah. [/float]The Good Samaritan who tried to stop the Christmas-versus-Chanukah subway beating has two black eyes and a sore nose - but no regrets. "I did what I thought was right," said Hassan Askari, 20. "I did the best that I could to help." Askari, a Bangladeshi Muslim studying at Berkeley College in Manhattan, was on a Q train headed to Brooklyn late Friday when he came to the aid of young women confronted by a group of 10 thugs. Fearful for the women's safety, he pushed one of the men away - and was then pounced on by the group, he said. "They grabbed me and punched and beat me up," Askari said. "They punched me first. I didn't get a chance to punch him back." Askari, all of 5-feet-7 and 140 pounds, said he was left with a swollen face. He said he didn't go to the doctor because he's too busy working two waiter jobs and doesn't have the money for medical care. He was mystified as to why the men became so outraged when the women and their male friends wished them a "Happy Chanukah" while they were yelling "Merry Christmas" on the train car. [float=right] Hassan Askari (r.) came to their rescue. He got black eye for his troubles. [/float]"I don't understand," he said. "They were just being nice." One of the Jewish victims, Walter Adler, expressed amazement that Askari took the risk to try to help. "That a random Muslim kid helped some Jewish kids, that's what's positive about New York," said Adler, 23, who suffered a broken nose and required four stitches to close a lip wound. Askari's interference allowed Adler to pull the emergency brake, which alerted police to trouble on the train.
DOB2RTO Posted December 12, 2007 Share #2 Posted December 12, 2007 Goes to show that the with all the negative press going on overseas, it doesn't reflect groups truthfully. You have good, and you have bad everywhere.
R1Toasty Posted December 12, 2007 Share #3 Posted December 12, 2007 Good for him. I'd love to see more of this happen. In fact, I was watching the news last night and they must not have had much to show because we saw the helpless subway assault video at least five times in a few minutes. I'd love to see more people like him, it'd be weird if they had to put guards on the subway... but lets hope it doesn't come to that.

You have good, and you have bad everywhere. Exactly. The media puts out a very denigrating image of Muslims in general, and the people who live in suburban/rural areas, who don't know any Muslims, will take this stereotype for granted and run away with it. It's absolutely true that violence in the Middle East and acts of terrorism here in America are entirely the act of Islamic jihadists - there's no denying that, and it is a matter that must be addressed in the political arena, and I do believe in enforcing an aggressive foreign policy to combat this violence. We have more than a couple of Arabs in my neighborhood, and never once have I encountered a problem with a single one of them, and never once have I heard any of them advocate violence against Americans or Jews. They're not here to kill us. They're here for the economic freedoms that America offers.

She noticed a transvestite and a Muslim who was on my bus. She said only here will you find Muslims and transvestites. The way she said it was just hateful. She is around 45+or-. Oh and get this. She rents out an apartment in her house, but she has no job of her own. She loves to complain ALOT also. She has rode my bus a few times already. I was dying to tell her to shut her bigoted, hateful, jobless trap up. Maybe she needs some good lovin'. Maybe that's why she is jobless.

Its good that there are stories that look past the stereotype that all Muslims are terrorists. There are many of those stories but they just aren't known. As for the story that DOB told, I hate people like that. It really angers me when I hear something like that, words can't sum it up really.
