Mayor Michael Bloomberg defeats William Thompson by thin margin

Mayor Bloomberg Tuesday night won the third term he once vowed never to pursue - though he did it by a surprisingly thin margin while outspending his rival by nearly $80 million.

With 94% of the vote counted, Bloomberg was ahead of Controller William Thompson by some 40,000 votes - the tightest margin of victory in recent memory.

It was enough to give Bloomberg a 50.4% to 46.3% lead, much tighter than most polls had predicted, and shocking New Yorkers who long assumed the mayor would easily roll to re-election

People really can't be trusted to vote for people who will do the right thing for their community, state, or region. I swear if this country gets any more pro-automobile/development i'm going to leave and never come back.

Your really jumping the gun here, right now it's only a prediction. How about you wait till it is actually announced.

How much longer do we have to wait? It's evident enough that the win is going to Bloomberg.

This is the worst possible outcome of this election. Get ready for four more years of bulls***. This city is f***ed and unless you work for a bank, you're going to hell in a handbasket. When all is said and done it will literally take YEARS to undo what Bloomturd will have done to this city.

Sorry about the tough break guys, looks like we got some retard republicans voted in here too, none of them know what the hell they are talking about or how to run a county/town. Then corzine, man we needed him for transit funding.. A real blow for modern progress.:mad::tdown:

I think people are afraid of having a person of dark skin in the white house, which i think prompted a lot of this. Pathetic if you ask me.

At the risk of everyone on here b****ing as loud as yuppies like to, this is why I am in favor of policies that "redistribute the wealth". People who sit there and say its "socialist" are clueless becasue they fail to realize that America was successful for 200 years because those who wanted to be rich could be, but everyone could get by. Nowadays, those who want to be rich can be enormously rich beyond any point where money would matter, and everyone else gets f***ed in the ass by a pole lubricated only by the overpriced hair products purchased by the outrageously wealthy.

Remember; "They only call it class warfare when WE FIGHT BACK"

No one called it class warfare the last 10 years when literally more than 2/3 of every dollar went to the top earning 5% of the population.

If they were afraid of a "person of dark skin" in the white house, then he wouldn't have won LAST year to begin with. Sorry, but it's a bit late to fall back on that one. Not to mention, Obama had nothing to do with the mayoral election other than a very small endorsement to Thompson.

What it really means ... if you could get beyond his race, is that it may be a wake up call for Obama to put the breaks on this Health Care reform which is killing his popularity. What happened tonight in Virginia and NJ (blue state) is evidence of that. Obviously Obama's campaigning in NJ didn't work for Corzine.

They say it's socialist becuase it is socialist. that's how socialism as a poltical idea works.

No, socialism is everyone getting paid the same. Common sense is people in a country making wages that allow them to finance a reasonable lifestyle without having to take out massive debt from the very banks that are making all the money and distributing it to the top 5% of the population who have more money than they could ever need. This money goes absolutely nowhere and does nothing to support an actual economy based on American PRODUCT. Finance is not a product. Profits from derivatives are not "real". A derivative is no different than me going to a casino and plunking down $5000 on red. Someone bets on black, makes a derivative. Someone bets on red, buys the derivative. That doesn't sound like a solid economic system at all because it isn't. It's horses*** that doesn't actually exist designed to make a bunch of bankers get a little slice of commission for making a bet that YOUR mortgage will fail with another bank.

they only called it class warfare when you fought back becuase they fought back, otherwise it's not a war.

Technicality. Ask any American if the bombing of Pearl Harbor was "an act of war." This is as cut and dried as it comes. The American people have been getting robbed and people are either too naive, too stubborn, too hopelessly optimistic, or too stupid to believe it by justifying the crooks' behavior with bulls*** talk about how smart they are and deserve everything they get. Yeah and Hitler was a cunning political strategist too... Or they blame the people for being stupid when they have been manipulated and programmed to make bad decisions, and no one is looking out for them.

I'm a poltical indenedant and I can't take the retoric bullshit people have been buying into these days. I don't buy that, this comes from the heart, when all this is said and done this city will be a better place.

Yup. A city dominated by a boom or bust finance industry that makes up almost half of its economy. Makes sense. Especially when tax revenues which support ever increasing spending are tied to the resulting budget. A city with no rent reform that will price people out and that is having difficulty filling vacant apartments and condo's because few can afford them. A city that sells out to developers every chance it gets and does not get good deals from them in the process. A city that is likely now going to tax "sugary drinks", ah yes American freedom, the freedom just like the economy that we should leave THAT alone even though it wiped out trillions of dollars but yet we have to tell people that they can't drink soda or eat cake.

The only turds around here are the ones with the (D)s next to thier names, becuase they are the cause of our problems right now. Ever since the 2006 mid term elections, club Pelois has been doing everything in it's power to basicly sell this country to China.

You just lost me here. America has been running an enormous trade deficit with countries like China for years. And that is because our economy is increasingly based on finance, and that has been made that way by BOTH Democrats and Republicans (including that idiot George W. Bush), so the way to solve this problem is to put Americans to work manufacturing things by reforming the economy and rewarding companies for keeping PRODUCTION jobs here and punish them for outsourcing. Open your eyes! But yet anytime I say that all I hear from the right wing dingbats is how "you can't legislate that! That's not a free market!" Well guess what...organizations with 30,000+ people can do a hell of a lot more than little old me over here in the red corner with my sugary drinks. The end results is people with no freedoms end up getting screwed by corporations with limitless freedoms, as opposed to people with full freedoms being forced to be treated fairly by corporations that cannot abuse their power.

Look at the fracking luaghing stock of a state government New York has. We've got a moron who'd sign just about anything you put in front of him becuase he can't read it for a govenor, and an a senate leadership group who was way more interrested in who was in charge then getting SOMETHING done. those two just sided with the republicians so they could get attention.

Everyone knows the state government is a joke and Patterson is a lame duck. But that has nothing to do with FIXING THE ECONOMY and BRINGING JOBS BACK and ALLOWING A MIDDLE CLASS TO EXIST AND THRIVE HERE.

The very man who let Lehmin Brothers fail, the man who put down the straw that broke the cammel's back that is our economy, is now the head of the Department of the Tresury? What the F#@! is that all about!

Nowhere in my post am I defending the Democrats, just saying that wealth DOES need to be redistributed because for years this country has been one big pyramid scheme taking money from the masses and sending it to the most economically useless arrogant greedy and selfish part of the population - pure profit for rich individuals.

This is the common conservative response to anything other than "free market, leave it alone, it will fix itself, no need to do anything, government should do nothing" by anyone: Attack the Democrats. You offer no solutions of your own just complaining about the Democrats. Guess what? If a Republican said in 2012 that he is running for President, that he is going to ban derivatives in the US, that he is going to raise the tax rates on the wealthy and create tax brackets all the way up to $10 million (all earnings above this taxed at 80%), that he is going to subject private investment pools to regulation, that he is going to limit civil lawsuit damages to $5 million (to be adjusted for inflation), that he is going to ban paid lobbyists (as in if you want to lobby, you can't be a professional...do it on your own time and unpaid) and ban corporate campaign donations, that he is going to begin trustbusting and make it illegal for government to bail out any financial company, that he is going to raise trade barriers with China, that he is willing to give every US citizen a $1,000 tax credit (guess what, still cheaper than the bailout), and that healthcare would be a single payer system overseen by the goverment equally in proportion to that of private insurers, who would split the "profit" portion...I would vote for that guy immediately.

And that's pretty damn bipartisan, but no one will ever do it because corruption reigns and politicians don't want their tax rates raised even if it would be good for this country.

Get ready for hell. We really are more f***ed than any of you want to believe, and the sooner you all realize it the better off each of you will be when it comes.

Disclaimer: I am a progressive. I do not identify with either party specifically though of late, I agree more with SOME Democratic points of view because Republicans have become increasingly intolerant, overly conservative and unwilling to change, and too frequently mix religion in politics which frankly has no place whatsoever in it (aka separation of church and state).

It was a very close race in NYC, personally im one of the few here who likes Bloomberg, Guliani is still my favorite NYC mayor. He took the city back from the vandals and drug dealers, and made it a place you can go without fear of being killed.

As for the other races, the New Jersey one should be a wake up call for Obama, his influence is waning, he campaigned like mad in NJ, which normally votes democrat and still couldnt pull Corzine across the finish line.

2010 is going to be very interesting...
