R44 5278 0 Posted November 5, 2009 Share #1 Posted November 5, 2009 While I visited Rutgers, I also railfanned at New Brunswick for the first time. I basically caught everything that I expected except for my favorite Comet IIIs on the NJT single-level train consists. The southbound express trains were all diverted to the southbound local track as they were probably replacing the ties since the tracks on the southbound express were the only ones fastened with Pandrol E-clips as the other tracks were fastened with the newer Pandrol Fastclips. Here are the trains spotted: Amtrak (All Expresses): Regional with HHP-8, Acela Express, Keystone with AEM7, and Silver Star with AEM7-AC NJT (All Locals): Arrow III MUs, ALP-44s with Comet IIM/IV/V, and ALP-46s with MLVs Enjoy! metsfan 2 Posted November 6, 2009 Share #3 Posted November 6, 2009 Nice. Always wondered why the cat towers there are so huge & complicated. Comet 3's are rare on the :nec: (nyp-tre) anymore... Look for them on :njc: trains. - A

metsfan 2 Posted November 6, 2009 Share #5 Posted November 6, 2009 Those cat are so tall cuz it hold hi-tension wire along with catenary. I'm thinking it "carries itself" over the river, meaning it carries not only the catenary, but all the power supply stuff & signaling too. - A

St Louis Car 09 22 Posted November 6, 2009 Share #7 Posted November 6, 2009 Great shots, nice location.Either you were standing on the tracks or your camera has very good zoom. The track shots were good, and the added Acela spoting as well. Those cantenary poles are hideous, lots of wires. R44 5278 0 Posted November 6, 2009 Author Share #8 Posted November 6, 2009 Thanks everyone! I definitely took advantage of the sunny day by using the light to capture many of my pics. To Andy: the cat poles are so tall between Metuchen and Monmouth Jct b/c they also carry separate high voltage lines above the catenary supply lines. Note that this feature is not present at Metropark and Princeton Jct. Just north of Metuchen, these high voltage lines head northwest, while at Monmouth Jct they head southeast (see Google earth). My other reason that these wires are not a part of the train line is that at the mini-substations like in Metuchen, these wires bypass them. To Nexis4Jersey: Did you happen to notice me on the other hand? If you were sitting on the left, then you probably could've since I was on the southbound platform. To St Louis Car 09: My camera is actually awful, but works well during sunny days. I initially wanted to video the Acela, but b/c that first shot created such a delay in camera, I rushed to get a last shot as it crossed the viaduct. The Acela was the highlight of my day, but I unfortunately missed the shot.

The Acela was the highlight of my day, but I unfortunately missed the shot. If you look at the timetable for the acela, you can often get them crossing by each other here, at levittown () in PA, and at the airport (ewr). - A

R44 5278 0 Posted November 7, 2009 Author Share #11 Posted November 7, 2009 Nice photos and a video from New Bunswick, sweet stuff going on there, ! Thanks! It's the second best place for speeding trains behind Princeton Jct!
