Ways To Get To/From Coney Island

Funny, I haven't encountered a Kings Highway-bound express (F) for a while. Almost all of the ones I've taken ran to Coney Island express (bypassing the late Kings Highway-bound train between 18 Avenue and Kings Highway).

They have been doing that alot more but it is not consistent since they are doing that to make up for lost time. The (F) seems to loose alot of time because of the (G) at Church Av and Bergen St.

The (N) is really boring until you hit Gravesend, or that little stub where you can see the LIRR Bay Ridge Line. All there is to it is watching walls filled with graffiti.

West End is also kind of a bad ride the second you leave 9th Avenue. It's just repeating brown houses. The second you hit Coney Island, you get a nice view of the yard.

The (Q) is generally a nice ride. Especially with the Construction going on.

The (F) is the best one out of the four. You see everything between the stub of the Culver Shuttle, Avenue X/Coney Island Yard, the Culver Viaduct.

The Culver is a block and a half from my workplace, so if I ever have to head down to Coney Island during the work week, I'll grab the (F)ox. If I'm headed down there at any other time, and depending on G.O.'s, the (N)ovember has consistently been, for me any way, the fastest way of between Midtown and Coney. I've actually made it back to GCT on a Friday afternoon in under 45 minutes via the Sea Beach out of Stillwell, and then transferring at Union Square to an uptown (4).

On a side note, and INDman might have an answer for this: I've seen track work lanterns on B3 and B4 at south end of the IND 7 Avenue station for a bit now. Any update on how the rehab project is going?

If my children want to go to my parent's house, it's not a long walk to Ave. U on the (B)(Q). My family waits for the (Q) to W 8th.

wow nice to bump a 1 and a half yr old topic lol

I wish the (D) was the West End Exp along with 4th avenue then that would be the BEST way to get CI for me, instead of via Flatbush/Brigiton Beach line on the (B)(Q)

Each line has its benefits.

The Sea Beach Line is quick, but there in no scenery.

The West End Line may be slow, but you have killer views of the Verrazano Bridge. The curve at 18 Av is a great place to take shots of trains on the curve.

The Brighton Line has a lot of variety, and more spots for good pictures, especially at the Brighton Beach Station.

The Culver Line goes through a lot of different neighborhoods, and gives you nice shots of the yard.

Since my fiance lives in Bensonhurst, I usually take the (D) to Coney when I need a hot dog.

As a side note, I proposed to my fiance at the top of the Wonder Wheel this past Labor Day. Obviously, she said yes.

Belated congratulations! B) (Q)<Q> (Q6) 70(QB)

West End Exp is a nice ride. I think this past week midday (N)'s were running express on the West End due to a GO, N/B. They sometimes do that in either direction if the Sea Beach is closed in one direction.

BTW, why did they stop running (N)s via Sea Beach express? I remember they used to do that.

It's been a while since they've done that and the last time it was announced as part of a GO a few years ago, it was canceled. I remember it because slants were still on the (N) during that time and I tried to catch a ride on the Exp, but it went local. Not sure if this has anything to do with it, but the S/B Sea Bch express track is now out of service and (R) put-ins use the N/B track before going into service at 36 St/4 Av or 59 St weekdays.

I remembered going down the southbound express track along Sea Beach. The ride wasn't that fast, and the train kept rocking back and fourth ever so slightly.

Those tracks now have a GO in effect, no trains can go fast then 10 MPH. This is in effect the whole length of the express tracks. As one could guess, this is because they are in horrible condition.

I suspected as much for the northbound track. I guess they just didn't bother to rehabilitate the southbound track and decided it was cheaper to keep just one.

The last time either of the express track had any real work done was in the early 90's when the S/B express was cut off just north of 8th Av and north of Kings Hwy. The N/B express was re signaled and the S/B express tracks south of King Hwy were upgraded too and that was it, untouched since then.
