"Mariners bullpen coach and former Rangers pitcher John Wetteland was hospitalized on Thursday afternoon for what officials call mental health issues.

A woman at Wetteland's home in Texas called for help for a possibly suicidal person, according to the Denton County Sherrif's Office.

'She said he (Wetteland) was complaining of being depressed and contemplating suicide', Seargent Roger Griggs said.

Police said Wetteland came out of the house with his hands in the air and asked for help.

Mariners team spokesman Jeff Evans said the club is still gathering details and is not ready to comment on why Wetteland was taken to a hospital.

The 43 year old Wetteland picked up 330 career saves in 12 seasons in the majors, retiring in 2000 with the Rangers. He was named the World Series M.V.P. in 1996 with the Yankees (He helped the Yankees defeat the defending World Series Champion Atlanta Braves 4 games to 2 in 1996). He has been the bullpen coach for the Mariners since December 2008."

The Associated Press contributed to this story.

Note: Mr. John Wetteland helped get the Yankees started in 1996 then when he left, the way was set for Mr. Mariano Rivera to become a fine closer.
