I worry if I sign up theyll wind up sending me junk mail. It might be an idea if I decide to go somewhere via Amtrak in future

Yes, this card is valid. Look here. I was thinking about it, too since it's not only rail travel discounts. And then again there is the ISIC card that is valid around the world, so you have options.
