Harry Posted December 3, 2009 #1 Posted December 3, 2009 The city's bike lane system is being ruined by road hogs, a new survey has found. A study by Hunter College found that a biker using the dedicated lanes in Manhattan for even five or six blocks will find a vehicle in the way 60% of the time. Student researchers who monitored 492 Manhattan blocks between Sept. 22 and Oct. 23 found most cars and trucks blocked the lanes for just minutes at a time. CPBO Posted December 3, 2009 #3 Posted December 3, 2009 Cars on the road....bikes in a bike path on the sidewalk.......that's how it should be.......
Grand Concourse Posted December 4, 2009 #4 Posted December 4, 2009 They never should've taken away car lanes for bike lanes...
lilbluefoxie Posted December 4, 2009 #5 Posted December 4, 2009 They never should've taken away car lanes for bike lanes... I agree, its just making things too dangerous on the roads, making things too congested and just enraging drivers even more.
INDman Posted December 4, 2009 #6 Posted December 4, 2009 They just got rid of 14 block worth of those usless space wasters in Williamsburg.

INDman Posted December 4, 2009 #9 Posted December 4, 2009 Robert Moses was the man, even though i am a subway enthusist you just gotta respect the power that man had. He would never let these bike lanes happen. Also, we would have LOMEx.

Joe Posted December 4, 2009 #11 Posted December 4, 2009 Anything that discourages travel to/from Jersey is good in my book.
Grand Concourse Posted December 5, 2009 #12 Posted December 5, 2009 yea, instead we have a totally gridlocked canal street and just general disarray in regards to going from the island to new jersey Canal needs traffic cops at every intersections. They are also needed because of idiot tourists and locals that refuses to stop at the damn 'don't walk' signs. It's a wonder no one has been struck dead on that place [besides the fact it's always crowded].
B35 via Church Posted December 5, 2009 #13 Posted December 5, 2009 I seriously wonder if the city thought the idea of (waisting paint) on creating bicycle lanes were really going to make motor vehicle users abandon their personal vehicles... for bicycles??? Despite the fact I will never ride a bike again due to messing up my achilles tendon for riding one, I still wouldn't consider riding a bike from East Flatbush (where I live) to SoHo/Greenwich Village (where I work).... I don't care if I worked w/i Brooklyn, I still wouldn't do it.... ...and if you notice, there are quite the number of streets in the outerboroughs that have these bicycle lanes on them.... barely ever had much vehicular traffic along them to begin with (a good example of this is along Bedford av, south of flatbush av here in brooklyn)... and you sit there & scratch your head & think about it on some level... like, why in the blue hell are there bike lanes on _______ street/avenue/road, etc.... I'm talking about roads in areas/blocks that are 100% residential.... Please tell me I'm not the only person who feels this way. also, the bicycle messengers you see riding in manhattan... guess what.. the majority of them don't use the bicycle lanes !!!... they're riding in the street w/ the rest of the motor vehicle traffic... so how really useful are these lanes? and as far as cars driving over bicycle lanes... doesn't surprise me one bit... they do the same ish' on bus lanes... Think about it... on a number of roads, they (the bike lanes) completely kill (once what was) a road that could handle two lanes of traffic... now cars can only drive on one single lane of traffic... final point in this post... not to make excuses for ppl. that do this... but those bike lanes make the *thought*, along w/ the actual act of double parking that much more feasible... that pic that Harry has there in the OP speaks for itself....
