IRT Bronx Express Posted December 4, 2009 #1 Posted December 4, 2009 Apparently, my computer hates me. It will not open up some programs such as Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Paint, etc. What's worse is, every time I log off, it says "end this program" despite the fact that no program is running. When I hit "Ok" or something, it logs off but it actually says "logging off" for an infinite time, as in, it will not log off and the message will permanently stay there for minutes or literally forever. I would appreciate some help.
metsfan Posted December 4, 2009 #2 Posted December 4, 2009 Sounds like you have some sort of malicious code going on, or some error keeping something running after you shut it off. - A
mark1447 Posted December 5, 2009 #3 Posted December 5, 2009 Get yourself a Malware(Antivirus) Protection software, and have your firewall turned on.. I also suggest you run maintenance on your system, such as Disk Clean up and flushing your Browsers Internet history.. Download this Free AV: http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/ Microsoft Secuirty Essentials(Morro) If your running Genuine WIndows XP SP3, Windows 7 RTM, Windows Vista RTM/SP1/SP2 Or google for other Antivirus software for free or paying..

SevenEleven Posted December 5, 2009 #5 Posted December 5, 2009 I would go with that some malicious code is active on your system. Like Mark suggested, you should try running an online AV scanner along with malware scanners. (The online scanners should suffice though) Clean whatever the scanners manage to pick up and then reboot your computer. If this is an ongoing problem, I would consider backing up all of your data, and application settings in the event that you will have to reinstall the OS.

I have seen what seemed to be major problems fixed by just changing an option.

Options selection which conflict each other or hinder parts of functionality that may not be obvious can do a lot of bad & weird stuff. - A
IRT Bronx Express Posted December 8, 2009 Author #8 Posted December 8, 2009 OK, I'm at school now using the library computer... It has to do with the avast Antivirus, the free edition. Because it expired last week or so, I needed a new serial number, and I entered a new one. That was on Wed before the next day where everything screwed up. I went to the CP -> security or something on my comp and it doesn't even mention that I have an anti-virus on my computer at all.

You need to update the definition right now. There has been reports of false positives from the early definitions of Avast. Lots of users had been complaining because there is no virus or malicious code in the software, devices, or the system. So that might have screw your system up. You have to backup your system up and scan your Avast on the system thoroughly.
NX Express Posted December 12, 2009 #11 Posted December 12, 2009 You have to backup your system up EXACTLY what I would do if I were you, unless you want to use everything.
CenSin Posted December 13, 2009 #12 Posted December 13, 2009 Regarding his problem, I've got a suspicion that his OS has sustained some corruption—pretty common to Windows. It comes with age (like cancer and Alzheimer) and happens much faster if you frequently add/remove programs. It happens even if you don't add/remove programs. More details would be needed to possibly pinpoint the cause, but generally It's good to do a reinstall once in a while to make sure your system is fresh. Viruses are not always the cause.
IRT Bronx Express Posted December 19, 2009 Author #13 Posted December 19, 2009 I'm back people and I'm here to report. The bad news is... my computer is finally fixed! (not that is bad news but... B)) Avast! Antivirus completely ruined my computer and so I deleted it and installed AVG and Comodo antivirus. I have to re-download it because the 64-bit or something is slowing down my computer a bit and I should've downloaded the 32-bit one. Anyways, Avast screwed up my computer because I had the free version since 2007, right? I needed a serial number to continue free service, and so I got one and I had another year of free Avast. Now, this year, the one year almost came to an end. And so what I did was insert LASY YEAR's serial number instead of getting a new one, and pop-ups saying I need to get a new ## for another free year. And so I got a new serial ## and the nest day, my computer screwed up mostly because Avast possibly couldn't determine which serial ## was new and created horrible errors, such as excessive Firefox freezing, not opening up Microsoft related software, Paint not opening up, and deleting my firewall. Yes, it was deleted and Windows Defender worked until it didn't function properly recently. Worst part was that it didn't log off or shut down completely. It would remain on the screen with a "logging off" message forever. I had to turn it off manually. =/ So I deleted Avast moments ago and installed AVG and it said there was no firewall detected AT ALL. I downloaded a free one: Comodo security. Despite the fact that it slows down my computer a bit, it was definitely worth it. Now I have firewall and antivirus protection on my computer, all of my programs can properly open with no problems, and I am back at last. 2-3 weeks of problems an d I fixed it on my own. Its no wonder why my mom wants me to be a computer engineer/technician. So, I am definitely back! EDIT: Oh, how selfish of me. Backup or Restore didn't work so I had to upload all of my images to my photo bucket account, sending all of my free-writing to my gmail, and delete all Pokemon episodes I downloaded last year. Pretty much, I saved all of my stuff in case my computer literally blew up. Thanks for those that helped me though!
NX Express Posted December 20, 2009 #14 Posted December 20, 2009 If you ever get any more trouble, get Zonealarm. It's a really good and not annoying antimalware program. I also suggest Spyware Doctor. (Yes, I have them both).
rr4567 Posted December 20, 2009 #15 Posted December 20, 2009 Or.... You can pony up the ca$h and get Norton So I deleted Avast moments ago and installed AVG and it said there was no firewall detected AT ALL. All that happened is that Windows Firewall was disabled, not deleted. All you had to do was re-enable it

By downloading Comodo LivePC Support/Net Security, Firewall was re-enabled again. Also, wth is Search Settings 1.1? =/

BrooklynBound Posted December 23, 2009 #21 Posted December 23, 2009 I've exclusively used Norton since, well, forever! Internet Security and Systemworks are a great combination. I have NEVER had problems with registry conflicts, self-installing programs or the wild virus/worms of late. Works for me, and for the dough I spend/spent on computing and related stuff, it's worth it.
mark1447 Posted December 23, 2009 #22 Posted December 23, 2009 Win Firewall is simple but its bs. Why? Only Inbound Protection. Outbound NONE! In Windows XP SP2+/Server 2003 no Outbound, Windows Vista/7/Server 2008/2008 R2 Yes but thats a manually configuration. Windows XP RTM/SP1/SP1a comes with firewall but very basic and doesnt protect crap. Plus its unsupported. If no one can afford a firewall get the Free ZoneAlarm Personal firewall which protects both ways.. Of course u can stick with WinFirewall but it isnt the best compared to ZA and others.. Besides firewall get an AV app and AntiSpyware app as thats also needed to help shield from viruses, ads and crap.. Firewall just protects your pc from trojens, being hacked and crap by preventing bad IPs from entering your pc.. If you set it. KEEEP YOUR PC UP-TO-DATE with latest Service Pack and Security/Updates I am not talking about Windows Defender. I am talking about Windows Firewall
