Yaphank rail project is still a no-go

Federal authorities who regulate railroads have again ruled against the company that bulldozed 18 acres of trees in Yaphank without permits -- but a final decision on the project is still pending.


In a Dec. 20 order, the federal Surface Transportation Board denied a petition from Sills Road Realty to press on with construction of a proposed spur and truck-rail facility south of the Long Island Expressway.


The decision lets stand the cease-and-desist order the board issued to Sills in October -- after Yaphank residents complained about swaths of bulldozed pines and machinery mining 20-foot gouges in the sandy soil.
