Longest trip by public transportation in NYC

I began to wonder today what the longest trip time from one point to another within NY city limits by public transportation might be.

I would consider all forms of public transportation -- subway, bus, express bus, private bus lines, railroads -- to be fair game.

I believe a strong contender is the Southern tip of City Island to the Southwestern tip of the Rockaways. Hopstop, using all its knowledge, gives a best answer of 2 hours and 50 minutes (4 buses and a train) for a total of 32.75 miles. I've found hopstop to be not completely accurate with time, though.

City Island to southern tip of Staten Island is even worse at 3.5 hours and almost 40 miles:

Anyone know of alternative public transportation that would shorten these times?

None I can think of, if you live in the outskirts of the five buroughs a car is a wise investment.

If you are traveling from Queens to the Bronx (71st forest hills to Yankee Stadium) , at minimum you are looking at a hour plus commute.
