metsfan Posted December 30, 2009 Share #7 Posted December 30, 2009 SD70ACe has the flair radiator then the boxy end? Why is that & vs the SD70? Is a rebuild? - A

kaback9 Posted December 30, 2009 Share #9 Posted December 30, 2009 SD70ACe has the flair radiator then the boxy end? Why is that & vs the SD70? Is a rebuild? - A Later SD70M's and MAC's also have the flair radiators all be it slightly smaller than that of the SD70ACe and M-2. Also its further back. Examples: thought I would stick with the UP theme, NS has both also. SD70M early: http://kaback9.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1865059 SD70M Later: http://kaback9.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1825541 I forget the exact reason behind the change back to the flair design but apparently they figured out it was a better one. theaveragejoe Posted January 6, 2010 Share #15 Posted January 6, 2010 How does a radiator hood do that? - A Im not too techincal but the SD70M-2 was redsigned from the SD70M for the new EPA tier 2 and 3 standards
metsfan Posted January 7, 2010 Share #16 Posted January 7, 2010 Im not too techincal but the SD70M-2 was redsigned from the SD70M for the new EPA tier 2 and 3 standards Oh, that's the engine, fuel flow system, piston & valve design. I believe the flared radiators are simply better at cooling and are absent on units they want for better visibility. - A
kaback9 Posted January 11, 2010 Share #17 Posted January 11, 2010 Correct with the cooling. They found out flared radiators were better or so they say at doing the job.
