Man killed by train near Red Bank station

An unidentified man was killed when he was struck by an NJ Transit train near the Red Bank station late Monday night, officials said.

The man was struck by a North Jersey Coast Line train about 11:25 p.m., NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel said.

The train, en route from New York to Long Branch with about 50 passengers on board, had just left the Red Bank station headed south when the man was stuck. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name, age and town of residence were not immediately known.

The passengers were escorted onto another train. No other trains were delayed, and service from New Year's activities in New York was otherwise not affected, Stessel said.
