JohnQPine Posted February 8, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 8, 2010 I know most NJT bus ops are courteous, professional drivers, but I had a guy tonight (I wont say route or bus number) that drove like a complete lunatic in the Lincoln Tunnel. I should've known he'd be crazy, because when he pulled up at the stop, he almost ran me over (I had to stand in the shoulder due to a mound of snow at the side of the road). Then he gave me the wrong recipt. And then in the Lincoln he must've been doing close to 60, cut a car off and almost crashed into it as he went from the right into the left lane in the tube (you know just where you enter and it curves), man I almost thought we were gonna have a collision right there. So I'm wondering if this needs reporting or not. I have no problem with buses going fast on the highway, but cutting cars off in a tunnel definately put my heart in my throat. And we weren't even late.

I know about PAPD, but perhaps they dont pull over NJT bus drivers. Or perhaps he just wasn't seen. I've been on so many buses I've lost count, this is the first time I've seen operation in such an agressive manner, so its not like I am one of those safety obsessed ppl at MTA management, far from it. But this driver was pushing it too hard. How can it be OK to be doing 50mph entering the tube in right lane, then abruptly changing to the left lane and cutting off another vehicle. Yes I arrived safe, perhaps it'd have turned out differently if the car the bus cut off wasn't paying attention and didn't slow down when the bus jumped out in front of him. And isn't it illegal to change lanes in the tunnel in the 1st place? Also I wonder if driving in the left lane is a no-no on the NJTP, because we did that too. JohnQPine Posted February 8, 2010 Author Share #12 Posted February 8, 2010 Nice, that Bus Operator must have been hauling a$$. Well not really anymore than the others until the tunnel, it seemed when the bus got to the tunnel it went much too fast. The speed limit in the tunnel is 35mph but we were at least 55mph or more, 'cause the cars looked like they were standing still. On the open highway (NJTP, parkway) hauling a$$ is great, but in tight spaces like the tunnel I dont think its a good idea. I would assume thats why the speed limit is 35mph not 55mph. JohnQPine Posted February 8, 2010 Author Share #13 Posted February 8, 2010 Lol you know huh? Haha! I guess he doesn't want to get that driver in trouble. Lets just say the driver I had tonight reminded me ALOT of some guy who used to work at CBS Lines before he got FIRED for numerous violations. 553 Bridgeton Posted February 8, 2010 Share #14 Posted February 8, 2010 60 in the Lincoln Tunnel...unm sorry no, didnt happen. Nice try tho. I worked the 319 all last summer and I was lucky if I got 35-40 if even that. Now the last 319 trip outta NYPA you can get 40, but there is way too much Port Authority Police in that area. Lincoln Tunnel is usually jammed...
metsfan Posted February 8, 2010 Share #15 Posted February 8, 2010 I've been on both Flexible & NABI on highway, it seems too fast, but they are not driving dangerously. They tend to haul when they are out in the open, but in the tunnel i'm pretty sure the speed is strictly enforced, PA has no qualms about busting a speeding bus. - A

When I was on 42nd St Peak Crosstown on NYWY , he was impatient with Lincoln Tunnel traffic, he went around left turn lane-medium lane on 42nd St from 12th to 11th Avs to beat a traffic! D.J. Posted February 8, 2010 Share #20 Posted February 8, 2010 The bus can't go past 60mph, and when it goes to 53, the acceleration rate drops. That's how all the NJT buses work, whether its a NABI or a Flx (well the flx can barely get past 40 lol) I can't say why, but other operators know what i am talking about

The driver did slow down near the Manhattan end, thats because there's usually a PAPD cop waiting there. He knew he was speeding in there and how to not get caught. Yes he did actually, the speed was similar, but that accident was actually caused by icing on the roads in the tunnel, which caused the rear wheels of the back section of the bus to slip. metsfan Posted February 9, 2010 Share #24 Posted February 9, 2010 That video is from a tunnel where ice often forms on the roadway surface, sending vehicles out of control. The driver actually did pretty well considering. - A
Nexis4Jersey Posted February 9, 2010 Share #25 Posted February 9, 2010 That tunnel in the video , is a badly leaking Russian tunnel , the river water seeps and instantly freezes creating black ice. Theres no way a bus can go 60 in the Lincoln Tunnel unless it was after 12am , between 12-4am the tunnel is near empty. ~Corey
