EE Broadway Local Posted February 11, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 11, 2010 Just announced on WABC 77: February 11, 2010 10:43 AM EST "New York City Will Keep Broadway Closed To Traffic." Sara Kugler Associated Press Writer NEW YORK(AP) - New York City will keep Broadway permanently closed to traffic in Times Square and Herald Square. The pedestrian plazas were created on two stretches of Broadway last year in a plan that attracted worldwide attention. The goals were to reduce pollution, increase safety and improve traffic flow. Mayor Micheal Bloomberg said Thursday the city has decided to keep the pedestrian walkway. The eight-month experiment has annoyed drivers, but it's been positively reviewed by pedestrians and tourists. The city released data Thursday of the resulting traffic patterns. Taxi trips were studied using GPS. The results were not as promising as hoped. But Mayor Bloomberg said the overall effects make the project worth keeping. Personally imo not a bad idea on closing Broadway for good between Times Sq and Hearld Sq.. However, i always felt it should be a 'bus only' lane should been maintained as well in that area. Grand Concourse Posted February 11, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 11, 2010 I like things now because Broadway no longer crosses 6th and 7th Avs. I don't really care about the 'green agenda', but I also like how 7th Av no longer is split into 2. Joe Posted February 12, 2010 Share #8 Posted February 12, 2010 Roads are for cars and trucks, not people. Around my area, all the mopes love to walk in the street; motivates me to install a K5LA on my car. Five chimes of wonder.

EE Broadway Local Posted February 12, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted February 12, 2010 Love the idea but the thing i hate is no more Broadway buses from 59th to 34th street =(! Actually I thought the buses on Broadway were rerouted between West 57th Street and East 14th Street because the original plan was to make Broadway into a pedestrian only mall (unlike Fulton Mall in Brooklyn) between Times Square and Union Square? Are Broadway buses going back to West 34th Street now?

Are Broadway buses going back to West 34th Street now? No. It'll be people only. Buses goes down 7th Av to continue south. M104 will just turn from 7th at 42nd St.
FamousNYLover Posted February 12, 2010 Share #14 Posted February 12, 2010 Speaking off that, 32nd St between 6th & 7th Avs, crowded and hurrying people still walk on road alongside the curb, disturbing BxM2/M4/Q32 B/O, well as other turning vehicles. B/O on these buses and other private B/Os had to honk to pedestrian for every seconds because they wait for DO NOT WALK SIGN to become WALK SIGN on street. They still does not understand bus and trucks need to make wide turn.
SubwayGuy Posted February 12, 2010 Share #15 Posted February 12, 2010 Boy with all that's going on with this city I"m glad to see this stupidity is what's occupying the mayor's time... Truly rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic or fiddling his thumbs while Rome burns...
metsfan Posted February 12, 2010 Share #16 Posted February 12, 2010 I like this plan, it allows for freer movement of people during busy times and a relaxing space during less busy times. - A
