Bx41 Wakefield Posted February 12, 2010 Share #1 Posted February 12, 2010 Which Orion V engine do you like better for the ? The early Detroit Diesel 6V92 engine or the current Detroit Diesel Series 50 engine? I like them both, but the 6V92 engine did sound a lot faster than the 50 series engine. Fan Railer Posted February 12, 2010 Share #2 Posted February 12, 2010 keep in mind that the 6v92 is a two stroke engine and the 50 is a four stroke. 6v92: 816 ft·lbf (1,106 N·m) @ 1300 rpm; 253-277 horsepower governed at 1800-2100 rpm DD-50: 890 ft·lbf (1,210 N·m) @ 1200 rpm 250-275 hp govern at 1800-2100 rpm of course there are other ratings, but these are the ones most likely found in the Orion V's. w8Hou Posted February 12, 2010 Share #3 Posted February 12, 2010 IMO, DD50 in both diesel and CNG application are JUNKY engine. These are probably the worst engine series made by Detriot Diesel. The engines are big and in some of the bus models loses 1 middle seat at the rear end. 6v92 FTW.

Bx41 Wakefield Posted February 13, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted February 13, 2010 This is very interesting. Now did the just replace the 6v92 with the DD 50 since the 200 series last had the 50 series engines in them?

Yes....and I think the MTA should've never Repower RTS's 8000-8399 buses, because the engine suck in those buses.
PATCOman Posted February 13, 2010 Share #9 Posted February 13, 2010 I like the 6v92 engines that were in the 1993 NYCT Orion Vs. The DD50s that Bee-Line had in their Orion Vs I also liked.
aemoreira81 Posted February 13, 2010 Share #10 Posted February 13, 2010 I say the Series 50. The problem is more with the rot problem on those frames, especially before the late 1990s, which hastened their retirement (less than 100 pre-1999 O5 diesels remain).
