Maybe that car was on the Euclid/Lefferts shuttle all night and the luminator sign failed when the car wound up on the A upon resumption of thru service. One Luminator is supposed to control the signs of the entire train. When the signal isn't passing through properly, that's when the signs can become isolated to two sets of 4, a 4 with a pair of 2's, or even four sets of 2. That's very likely what happened here.
